Wait . . . don't carriers up there charge for voicemail? Or is that some sort of bundled plan?

My next attempt would be to disable notifications from "Phone" and see if that stops you from getting phone calls. I'm certain that would block missed call notifications as well.

Barring that, I'd call my voicemail and go through the settings there (which is excruciating) and see if there's a way stop it there after deleting the poo poo in there.

Lolipop made my Moto G grind to a halt. Maybe that's what the G stands for, "Grinds to a halt on Lolipop". I'm kind of glad that Motorola hasn't pushed out the 5.x update for the 2013 X now, so I don't have to keep telling it NO when it asks to update.

Hoping for advice with an android problem. I've pretty much already written it off as a lost cause, but just posting here on the off-chance.

Is there any way to undelete / restore photos on an unrooted 4.4.4 Moto X?

Backstory is annoying and here: http://www.reddit.com/r/MotoX/comments/2sykbq/undeleting_restoring_files_without_root/ (this was last Tuesday)

Short version: tried to move the contents of the phone to my laptop after the screen went funny. Operation failed halfway through. Noticed later that the files weren't appearing on either the phone or the laptop.

I don't want to root because (A) I'm exactly the kind of idiot who'd skip a step or mis-type something and brick the phone, and (B) I might actually need to use the warranty because of the screen problem that kicked this all off.

The problem I have now is that assuming the data is still there and TRIM hasn't already dropped it, most of the ways of accessing the raw data seem to involve writing new stuff over the data I'm trying to restore.

Am I chasing a lost cause here?

To elaborate: flash memory pretty much turns over blocks as soon as they're deleted. Not necessarily erase-commanded (though often so), but they go back into the pile of unallocated blocks, and if the OS asks for it without allocating it the result could be some other deleted block, because memory controller blocks and OS blocks don't have to be the same thing, otherwise wear leveling wouldn't work. This frustrates data retrieval services, government investigators, and spies to no end.

So yeah, your only hope is that the data got out okay but now you can't find it, and a quick glance at your drive's fill meter will tell you that.

He did mention it was pornography.

That said I can't imagine needing specific pornography so badly that you care this much about recovery.

I can't imagine Google cares, but I also can't imagine Bobby Deluxe wants or needs all his jerk off material backed up to Google+. Of course if I cared that much I'd probably do a better job making sure it's backed up somewhere, probably locally.

Then again I can't imagine ever wanting pornography on my mobile device so maybe I just don't get the mindset.

Staring mostly, today people are much more courteous and don't require locking eye contact.

Bobby Deluxe

Excuse me, a gentleman always maintains eye contact. :colbert:

To elaborate: I mentioned the porn only because it was my motivation in moving the files rather than copying them - if the problem with the screen had persisted, I'd have had to send it in for repair and nobody needs to be bombarded with that much grot in the middle of their work day. Plus I've worked in tech support, I know what happens to 'personal' photos you leave on your phone. I was going to back it all up and then do a factory reset after reading that they now irretrievably wipe the memory.

Ironically, this all came about because the phone hosed up and I tried to back up it's contents so I wouldn't lose them.

The stuff I wanted to restore was photos taken since about October (non-pornographic, included family xmas photos), a couple of bits of music I'm fairly confident I can find again, and some manuals I had in my download folder that are going to be a right poo poo to try and find again. Most of the content on there was backed up in other directories across my laptop, desktop and a couple of DVDs, it's just the stuff I hadn't got round to backing up in the last few months.

Oh, and I turned off the automatic google backup as soon as I got my phone because i'm paranoid. Around the time of the iCloud leaks I even double checked it was off and felt very smug indeed. And it wouldn't be out of character for Google to 'helpfully' link two of their apps and somehow end up making everything public.

There's an app called 'Dumpster' which claims to offer recycle bin functionality to android, so there's that for future reference.

Thankyou for clarifying anyway.

I have over 16k photos in my Google+ upload account. Of them, I somehow had *one* pic of some topless chick I must have downloaded from Reddit a few years ago. I just don't save/upload porn to my photos.

Was cleaning junk out the other day and noticed the pic with a little triangle and and exclamation point on it. I clicked on it and it said it had been flagged for unacceptable content.

I have zero shared photos.

Who the gently caress flagged it?? :stare:

Lemmie guess...algorithms, right? Lets hope google employees aren't combing through everyone's non shared photos right guys?

I understand the TOS but its not like I'm storing terabytes of porn on my account. One single photo was all. Somehow it was found and flagged.

Yes, there's someone going through your 16000 photos looking for the one single topless photo in it all.

Of course it's loving algorithms.

That's also how come you can search for "yellow couch" and it will show you all your photos with a yellow couch in them. There's not a bunch of dudes there going through billions of photos describing the content of them all just so you can search them.

I always though Amazon Mechanical Turk was sort of the backend for a lot of the development for these services. Like there's a log of algorithmic analysis, but a portion are sent to real people for verification.

Moto phones (at least the last gen) even did TRIM on delete and didn't wait for the background process in KitKat, so the data is likely completely gone.

No, it's all algorithms.

Well, I mean, if something is flagged by algorithms for child porn, I guess that's probably sent to someone for verification (what a horrible, terrible, disgusting job).

There's no point in sending it to real people. Modern image analysis algorithms are amazing.

I guess maybe non-google services that don't have the engineering chops to program something like that might farm it out to China, but I dunno.

After disconnecting the battery for a while, I was able to boot the phone (which I believe worked last time, as well). So, I'm currently running a Helium backup just in case. I'll probably have to wait until we get our tax refund to buy a new phone, though. In the meantime, I'll try to do some diagnostics to figure out what causes the crash, which seems to be a thermal issue.

So if I were to buy a Nexus 6 direct from Motorola, they're going to charge me sales tax, and that $649 phone turns into $722. Amazon has the phone for $649 all-in, shipped via Prime, but it's locked to AT&T.

I'm seeing people on eBay selling Nexus 6 unlock codes for like $8. If I buy an unlock code, can I put my Verizon SIM in it and have it work same as if I bought from Motorola or the Play Store?

IMO, don't buy the Nexus 6, but if you insist, do something like this:

http://swappa.com/listing/LDE730/view

If it doesn't work out, blast the seller with a PayPal dispute. Swappa's never screwed me though, so there's that.

By the way, Motorola will honor a 3rd party sale. So you would be covered via warranty for 10 months (for this particular listing).

If I understand correctly the old runtime compiled the code as needed, which meant xposed could modify the code each time it ran. ART pre-compiles everything, so the sort of mods that xposed make are extremely difficult. That said, I think the dude noted he'd found a solution.

He popped up a couple weeks ago to say he's still working on it; he's just not posting builds or github merges until he's got something that works.

Although yes, the way ART works means KitKat might hit end of life before Xposed for ART is ready.
