NTRabbit posted:Worth mentioning that Botes has a massive memory leak issue right now, I'm lasting maybe 5 battles between client restarts Strangely no issues with this. Weird. For the AP vs HE it comes down to range and size of guns. With the BBs landing a salvo of HE on something small is basically the end of their world. In addition setting CVs on fire with them is really awesome. For Cruisers and DDs I'm a big fan of using AP while closing from extreme range HE in the middle range and then back to AP within 5k. Last night I was able to deal 3 to 1 damage with 2 St. Louis in the Sampson because they are very large and just dropping shells right in their armored middle. Playing cruisers for right now and they are so smooth and buttery it's really nice. The DD everything is OH GOD INCOMING *cringe turn pray you don't die* but the cruiser can shrug enough damage off that you can get close enough to BBs that then dump a nice hot load of torpedoes into them.

My only problem which may be a memory leak issue was that after awhile, the voices for my squadrons stopped working. Music stopped too I think. SFX was still going though, so it was an interesting play at that point. Also, strobe, dive bombers get better once you upgrade away from the crappy biplanes. They probably only used 100lb bombs which is why they seemed to hit for so little to you. JuffoWup fucked around with this message at 17:46 on Jan 24, 2015 |

Finally spent the time in MM to float around in the Langley. Thanks for the tip Juffo. First round kept the fighters nearby the BBs and then jumped their torp bombers. Shot the whole wing down. Brought them back....did it again. 8 air kills then a DD and a BB. Hilarious watching those biplanes nuke things.

Yeah, a properly played carrier is amazing and very rewarding. However, the amount of multitasking it requires is going to gently caress a lot of teams when the retard squad starts playing.

The St. Louis is basically the discerning sea captain's choice of gunboat, big wins with top xp two battles in a row while clobbering Fusos and Kongos who had poor target priority, and kicking in destroyers with 2 HE salvos I turned audio and graphics from high down to medium, seems to be holding, might turn the graphics up again in a little while to see if it really is an audio thing because medium graphics sure makes the game ugly

So far I've just been setting the fighters to escort BBs that are going to the middle of the map and then moving them as needed. The Torp planes I've been a bit more meticulous with to create some really nice side on shots.

btw for you carrier pilots. Make sure the mash the w key a few times at the start of the match along with changing course. The autopilot only boats at half speed. And yes, you can recover and launch your planes at full speed while turning for whoever asked. I never noticed this before, but realized it near the end of the t6 grind. The autopilot will still operate btw, just now you will be going full speed to better keep up with your team instead of being left on the other side of the map from them.

That feeling when you have 2 squads of torp bombers execute a perfect attack from 2 different sides is great. Usually the pubbie just locks up and eats every single torpedo.

For AP vs. HE hits, every ship has a hitbox where all shells that penetrate will do more damage. They correspond to stuff like ammo stores or engines or whatever. Most ships stack a ton of armour on these hitboxes so you need AP to penetrate the armor for full damage. The armour is usually in the shape of a rectangular box, so angles do matter. You can orient your ship in just like in tanks to increase your effective thickness. Range matters as well, because long-range shells tend to plunge downwards, close-range shots go straight, and mid-range shells hit the armoured box at some angle. Most importantly, your shells need to actually strike the hitbox to do damage. If you shoot AP at the front of a carrier, you're hitting nothing and you'll do piddly damage. I know the Langley has an engine hitbox at the bottom stern, but I don't know about the other ones. Destroyers are so small that you can't expect to actually hit them where it matters, until they're well within torpedo distance. HE just has a narrower range of possible damage, but if you have very large or a lot of guns, it quickly adds up.

I think I hate playing BBs. They are just too slow to react. Granted I'm only on the tier 4 but man it is just so ponderous. Edit: I also hate the loving pubs that are in them that can't hit the broadside of a barn that sit 3/4 of the away across the map contributing nothing before being torp bombed. rex rabidorum vires fucked around with this message at 19:49 on Jan 24, 2015 |

Someone in a destroyer casually drove straight across the map and unloaded a large torpedo barrage into my carrier at about 50m away. Being unable to defend yourself or even maneuver is a bit annoying sometimes. Torpedo bombers are not good against destroyers at all and dive bombers are too slow to reload to be of much use. At some point the queue screen was replaced with a completely black screen, plus mouse cursor. Why? Who knows. But the game went into matches as if it worked properly.
