I really hate that I can't find anyone with drat Stare Down's for trade. Other than that, Blue Ginyu has been pretty insane. Level 3 is pretty much game over if I can hold board state of at least a Ginyu Force ally or two. Nappa is also absurdly strong as an ally.

Managed to fire off an 8 person tourney tonight. Decks were:

Blue Ginyu
Black Ginyu
Piccolo Namekian
Gohan Namekian
Goku Red
Trunks Saiyan
Krillin Black
Goku Orange

I ran the Blue Ginyu, and went 4-0 to split prize. Toughest match by far was Piccolo. Namekian is hard to keep in check even with my mastery making the anger victory hard to get to. MVP of the night was Nappa, he did a ton of work against all my opponents, shutting off some of their better Setups.

If you play Pokemon I found a thing!

tcgone.net

It's basically TCG online but better in almost every way. The UI can be unfriendly and there's not enough feedback on some of your actions, but you can make almost any legal deck you want for free by simply asking for it. I think they're a couple cards out of date, but that's forgivable considering that it's a guy making this in his spare time. I played a couple games against a friend of mine and it worked perfectly; every card worked right and it's all the good parts of playing a card game minus the shuffling and hand management and blah blah blah.

This is essentially it. They share the same "trigger" mechanic, but the added strategy from the card interactions (eg: backups) really move the game from drop and swing, the vanguard approach, to an action/reaction game. The game is a solid game.

Hopefully this is a good place to ask this question!

My niece apparently wants Pokemon cards for Christmas, "she likes the ones with a lot of points." (my sister followed up with "I have no clue either")

She's 9 years old, if that matters. I looked on Amazon and they have all sorts of kinds of cards - and I remember from back in the day playing MTG, that it's probably expansion sets and poo poo like that.

Any recommendations for a good starter set? I figure if it's anything like MTG, I could get some type of base starter set, and maybe some booster packs to go along with it? Links to Amazon would be appreciated!

Probably a lot of hit points? Hit points are basically like toughness in MtG except persistent. I'd probably figure out exactly what she means.

Here is a list of pre-constructed decks that you can go out and buy:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Theme_Deck_%28TCG%29

If you think she wants to actually play the game, get one from Boundaries Crossed or later. They're all probably pretty bad decks but it's a starting point. If you think she's going to be a normal 9-year-old and just have a bunch of Pokemon memorabilia, it probably doesn't really matter what you get.

Being ridiculously anti-feminist and stereotype-y and picking out decks with cute Pokemon in them, since I don't really know your niece's tastes:

http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Card-Game-Theme-Decks/dp/B00I80RZSY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1418335663&sr=8-3&keywords=resilient+life
http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Trading-Card-Game-Enchanted/dp/B00MJ8JCA0/ref=pd_sim_t_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0FHKKDBHFC3W88DDAZ5Z

If you think she wants to play the game for real, I'd probably either get a booster box for about $100 (yes, I know)

http://www.amazon.com/Pok%C3%A9mon-...ces+booster+box

or a deck (or a couple????) with a lot of good cards that are not Pokemon in them for about $15, with the understanding that she's going to need to need to trade/buy a lot:

http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Furio...rds=dark+hammer
http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Flash...=mystic+typhoon

So depending on budget and what exactly she wants, that should get you basically what you're looking for for her.

I made a series of bad investments. Tarantula farm. The bottom fell out of the market.

I know that when I was 9 and starting to collect MtG, I didn't actually have an interest in the game, but I loved the cards and sorting them and looking at them and making stories with them. Most of all, more than anything, I loved the excitement of opening a pack of cards.

I think you can toe the line by getting her two recent preconstructed decks and a bunch of boosters. You don't have to buy a whole box, ten or so would be awesome. But if you can drop the cash, I know that I would have poo poo my pants if I had ever gotten an entire box of MtG boosters as a kid. Having a bunch of boosters will also ensure that she gets some Pokemon that have a lot of "points", which is adorable and I'm guessing refers to hit points. She might like them because high-HP Pokemon tend to be inherently cool-looking, since they're usually final evolutions.

edit: I read your post more closely and I would recommend getting one of these. It's the equivalent of a "fat pack" in MtG and they are pretty baller. Eight booster packs, 45 energy cards (mana) so she can make different decks, player's guide, card sleeves, some neat little markers you can use during gameplay, and it all comes in a card box that has plenty of room for more cards in it:

http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Phantom-Forces-ELITE-TRAINER/dp/B00ONCP4WU

I would also get her two starter decks if you think she will want to actually play the game, just so she has two decks that are ready-to-go so she won't have to worry about deck construction if she isn't at that point yet. If you had the money it definitely wouldn't hurt to throw in some more boosters, as many as you can/want.

After waiting a while to see if I'd have time again for them, I finally decided to sell some of them. I'm selling my VTES cards, mostly because they are taking up the most space:

I'm keeping my 7th Sea cards (for one thing, I have less of them to take up so much gatdamn space), but I'm interested in talking to folks who still play that. It's been a while since I've played, but I'm curious if anyone has any good fixes, house rules, or ideas about it. I remember liking 7th Sea, but it had some issues that I might try to fix if I can't find fixes online.

I'm playing still, or at least talking about the game a lot. I'm not in love with the set 1 metagame (though the Namekian errata was definitely an improvement), and some of the leaks about set 2 don't leave me optimistic, but I think the game's framework is solid and it's still fun to play.

As for what has been successful; I think I've mentioned my playgroup in the past and their pedigree (lol) with the old game, and we pretty unanimously agree that Ginyu is the only tier 1 deck right now. Fortunately Blue, Black, and Orange are all viable and all play pretty differently. Orange and Namekian Piccolo and Black Krillin are close to being top tier too, though the former is kinda hard to nail a specific build for - One of us has had success with an Orange Devastation-based deck that runs a few janky drills and we're pretty sure that isn't optimal, but no one really knows how to play against it yet so it still scrubs out quite a few wins (I think he's won two decent locals with it now). Everything else is sorta in this murky "well it's probably ok if your local meta doesn't have good Ginyu players" category, stuff like Red/Blue/Saiyan (lol x2) Godku, Orange Krillin, Namekian Gohan, maybe some others. I think Black Krillin is the best non-Ginyu deck personally, but Black has a really high learning curve that I am absolutely too stupid to master, and it's only going to get more pronounced in the future.

Also wtf is with the HUGE price spike on URs on ebay? poo poo went from like $60-80 to $150 seemingly within a week. Aik still stalwartly defends Sphere as a card that won't be a staple in the future, but the only way I see that happening is if they explicitly design cards that would otherwise have been Events as Physical/Energy Combat (they did this in Score Z a bit but not too much)

I played a bunch of DBZ last week, and will hopefully be playing it more in the future. I've mostly been playing Namekian Piccolo, as I really enjoy playing with the Dragonballs. It's not working quite as well with the errata, but its still pretty solid. For instance, the Blue deck my friend was playing (I think it was SSG Goku) was able to completely prevent me from leveling up, but I managed to outpace him on damage anyway. My first deck was Orange Goku, which is still fun, but I've transitioned it over to Krillen now. I really like having Solar Flare to end battles when I want.

I love using the Dragon Balls. I've got a full set in both my Namekian Piccolo and Orange Krillen decks, though obviously it works better with Piccolo. Let me see if I can remember what's in it:

7x Dragon Balls
1x Yamcha - Action Ready
1x Chaozu - Resurrected
1x Dragon Radar
1x Namekian Dragon Clan
1x Namekian Wish
2x Namekian Combat Drill
3x Namekian Hybrid Defense
2x Namekian Overtime
2x Namekian Silencing
1x Time is a Warrior's Tool
3x Piccolo's Weighted Clothing
3x Namekian Flinch
3x Namekian Right Throw
2x Namekian Side Kick
3x Namekian Zone Pressure
2x Blinding Energy Move
3x Namekian Crossed Guard
3x Namekian Double Strike
3x Namekian Maximum Will
3x Namekian Overhead Blast
3x Namekian Palm Shots
2x Namekian Planned Attack
2x Namekian Targeted Strike
3x Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon

Something like that, at least. Although the Dragon Balls usually end up getting shuffled back in the deck to trigger effects, Namekian Silencing and Namekian Overhead Blast are there to prevent capture in case several are out. From my experience, those cards, plus Namekian Double Strike and the Namekian Mastery keep me in control of the Dragon Balls. I'm also not running that many blocks, as I've found that I want to take damage, and then Rejuvenate the stuff I want out of my discard pile. Also makes my deck smaller so I'm more likely to draw my Dragon Balls. To that end, I usually run Visiting the Past, but I've been experimenting with Blinding Energy Move to end combat if I feel I'm taking too much damage. Namekian Combat Drill also helps keep my power stages up so I can keep using Energy Attacks. I think I'll experiment with putting Devastating Blow in next for more Anger management and the banishment effect.

I really feel that the only thing holding black back right now is the level of mastery involved with it. You have to know exactly what cards beat your deck and in what situations more than other decks, and you just generally have a lot of options all the time. Playing against a mediocre black player is the worst, because they take forever to decide anything and games take 40 minutes.

Mostly its the lack of access, but I'm really not sure what I would swap out if I had them. I feel the deck is already heavier on the non-attacks then I'd like, but I'm too attached to everything. It's always fun to lead with Piccolo's Weighted Clothing, then Namekian Silencing so they can't play Confrontation/Stare Down. I did that nearly every time my friend drew one one game; he was so mad. If I ever get a hold of some, I'll have to play around with it.

Weiss Schwarz

Weiss Schwarz is a CCG made by Bushiroad. It has recently started to release sets in english. Each set is a different anime. Some of the sets in english are Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, and Fairytale is being released in December. Japan as a lot more sets.

The goal of the game is to essentially deal 28 damage to your opponent.

The Level of the card and the amount of stock (this games resource) are in the top left corner. In this case the Level is 3 and the cost is 2. The top right corner is the trigger. In the bottom right is the character's power. The cards soul, the amount of damage the card deals, are the fluers-de-lis next to the power. The character's types are next to those.
You build stock through attacking the opponent. When a character attacks, you reveal the top card of your deck, check for a trigger, and put the card face down in the stock area. When you take damage, you put the top cards your deck into the damage zone. There is another type of card called a Climax. While taking damage if one of those cards is revealed to be a climax, you stop taking damage and put all the cards into the waiting room(discard pile). If you have 7 damage, you choose one of those cards to be put in the level zone and the others go to the waiting room.
When you attack you deal damage, then compare the power of the characters involved. The character with the lower power is reversed(turned upside down), and then later put into the waiting room. You can pay three stock to save it.

I tried to get the core of the game play, but I may have explained things poorly or missed things. If you have questions, please ask. I love this card game, and want it to be more popular. Even if you do not like anime, it is a solid game.

Edit: just decided to do a short write-up.
Good to see that I'm not the only one that plays Weiss Schwarz!

It's a pretty cool game, with a fair amount of tactical flexibility and it's very anime in the sense of being able to use better cards the closer you are to losing the game. As mentioned already, it is very similar to Vanguard and due to it including a variety of popular anime series it does pretty well.
If you get lucky you can even pull cards signed by the character's voice actor/actress:

If anyone is looking at getting into the game, definitely check with your FLGS/card shop to see if there's much of a community for it before taking the plunge, or (better yet) drag some friends who like anime into playing it with you.

MTG really spoils us with card pricing. The big thing to take note of in WS is that decks are a fixed size of 50 cards, as opposed to 60+ in MTG (or a flat 100 in EDH) which makes a bit of a difference. It's still pricey though, that's for sure.

EDIT: There's also the benefit of being self-contained and new sets being for different series' altogether, so unless a vol2 set comes out you don't need to buy more cards to keep it current, whereas other CCGs tend to have a bit of power creep, or have a universally accepted set rotation that sees older cards shift off the gaming tables at regular events.
WS sets each tend to do a few things very well, KanColle for instance has a lot of Heal-Tax and anti-salvage and SAO/KLK can throw out a ton of damage and nigh-unshiftable characters, and even some of the older sets still hold up really well in the tournament scene (SAO for instance is still tier 1 in competitive iirc).

Really? Except for Store Manager's Son, Yosuke, everything you need for a basic Junes deck is in the Trial Deck. I mean, you'll want to fill out the rest of the deck with Junes traits (especially Liquor Store's Daughter, Saki Konishi and Friendly Siblings, Protagonist & Nanako) but until then, it still works pretty well as part of another deck. I filled mine out with Blue, mostly Margaret and Aria of the Soul. Now I'm working on a Yellow/Blue deck with the leftover Yellow Protagonist cards, Margaret, a bunch of events to fuel Lv3 Margaret's ability, and some Naoto. Needs some tweaking but I think it's working.

As for the expense, yeah, that's not so fun. With the relatively small number of cards in each set, I've been pretty comfortable taking it slow and just buying a few packs a week. We've also got a bunch of people into the game, so there's been a whole lot of trading going on. Selling the couple of signed cards I've pulled will also help with costs, once I get around to it.

DBZ has always been an east coast game. I'm not really sure why, but most of the best players come from there, or Texas (I think it was Texas, it's been a while). Obviously that was a decade ago, but I'm not really surprised to hear things haven't changed, unfortunately. Maybe ask a game store if they'd consider running something during the week? It's weird, my campus game club doesn't even know the game exists, despite having people show up every week to play poo poo like Vanguard, but there's still two weeklies within 30 minutes of me.

I think there is one place out in Aurora, but the 20-mile drive is discouraging. I really do need to call them.

Something I have encountered is that several game stores that are nearer to me are aware of the game and have had a few people ask about it, so I know that there's some interest in the metro Denver area.

EDIT: Welp. Sunday at noon in Aurora it is.

Currently having a time trying to clean up my Blue God Goku build. I'm torn between a few things. Namely, which attacks make the cut. Like I like the utility Blue Neck Beams bring, but I also like the fact that Blue Arm Blast hits for 5 and can double as a block because of the additional text. Also, I like the idea of Dragon Balls with Blue Reprimand so I can juggle like DB7 and set hands up for when I am against Ginyu or any orange build.
