This thread is great at finding good urban fantasy, but the genre started out as vampire/werewolf/faerie porn and it's no coincidence that the Dresden Files is full of sexy vampires, werewolves and faeries.

Beyond that, Glen Cook started the Garrett series at least six years before Hamilton started the Anita Blake series, and even then she didn't let it devolve to what it became until several books in. So no, the genre clearly did not start as wish fulfillment for the folks that found Harlequin romance novels boring.

Edit: Hell, Hodgson's first Carnacki story was published in 1910. And after that Derleth wrote some Solar Pons stories that involved supernatural things.

Did they sell seven million books? Because Anita Blake did and that's what everyone else is trying to cash in on.

Well never mind then, I guess Amazon just likes to obfuscate their region locking, because this is what I'm seeing on Amazon.uk:

Only actually clicking on that link makes it clear that they don't have it available  It definitely came out on the 6th in Germany, though. I suppose publishers are less worried about the English editions cannibalising sales in non-English speaking countries.

Pure insanity

The thing Is the American publisher has (pseudo)exclusive rights in the US and sets the release dates, the UK publisher does the same for the UK, and in Germany you can buy from both since they are imported anyway.

The Dresden files started (barely) before Anita Blake turned into vampire/werewolf porn. Butcher (and others back then) might have been trying to cash in on Anita Blake, but the Anita Blake they were emulating was a long way from the badly written slashfic protagonist that she's become.

Butcher also wrote Storm Front and the series outline as a college project so I'm fairly certain Hamilton hadn't blown up when he was trying (and failing) to prove his professor wrong about outlines

Is the Anita Blake series worth starting with the knowledge that eventually it will all turn to poo poo?

Guilty Pleasures came out in 93, and started to make bank with werewolf/vampire sex around 97/98. I know Hamilton introduced Butcher to her own agent and helped him get Storm Front published around 2000.

By your logic the horror genre didn't get started until the mid-70s when Stephen King started making millions off of each book.

That depends. Do you like hearing elaborate description of the appearance of each character, for each scene, for each book? With attention to the particular shade of violet their eyes are, whether the hair to their waist is black or blonde, and if their black top is silk or leather?

I was planning to wait on getting Unbound until I caught up on my stack of books to read, but all the praise it was getting made me swing by the local bookstore and I'm very glad I did.

I enjoyed the first ones when they came out but there wasn't really much urban fantasy back then. It's entirely possible that I'd hate them if I re-read them now. If you do decide to read them, a quick check of wikipedia to refresh my memory shows that book 9 is the last one with a plot. For everything after that, well, here's a representative sample of wiki's summary for later books:

A terrible wiki summary of a terrible book posted:

Blake is once again forced to have sex with several were-tigers, one of which is a sixteen year old boy and virgin.

All I'm saying is that the modern subgenre of urban fantasy was created by Hamilton when she realized that werewolf sex sells books, and that her success influenced publishers and authors.

Except you were provided a number of examples of urban fantasy that predate Hamilton. She may have been the first to see a large financial success with the genre, but she in no way created it.

Nope. I read So You Want to Be a Wizard in like 1984.

Her success may have brought more visibility/interest but it didn't create jack poo poo.

e: Interview With a Vampire came out in 1976! If you don't think that any of Hamilton's success isn't directly owed to that book you be cray-cray.

If you're defining "modern urban fantasy" as Anita Blake and other werewolf-sex knockoffs, then yes, I suppose she did start the genre.

Who the heck cares talk about books you like.

Ive been reading The Hollows by Kim Harrison since I noticed them in the bookstore. Don't know how I feel. The main character reminds me of dresden a little bit (Headstrong, kind of dumb, gets in over her head) but without charm. Then her vampire friend comes into the story and i..freaking..hate..her. Every scene with the bloody vampire is like "RAWR IM AN ANIMAL" or the main character blaming herself for what the vampire did.

So anyone have any better suggestions? I listen to audiobooks mainly, I had problems with River of London and don't know if I want to continue with The Nightside books.
