Beyond that, Glen Cook started the Garrett series at least six years before Hamilton started the Anita Blake series, and even then she didn't let it devolve to what it became until several books in. So no, the genre clearly did not start as wish fulfillment for the folks that found Harlequin romance novels boring. Edit: Hell, Hodgson's first Carnacki story was published in 1910. The thing Is the American publisher has (pseudo)exclusive rights in the US and sets the release dates, the UK publisher does the same for the UK, and in Germany you can buy from both since they are imported anyway.

Butcher also wrote Storm Front and the series outline as a college project so I'm fairly certain Hamilton hadn't blown up when he was trying (and failing) to prove his professor wrong about outlines

Guilty Pleasures came out in 93, and started to make bank with werewolf/vampire sex around 97/98. I know Hamilton introduced Butcher to her own agent and helped him get Storm Front published around 2000.

Ive been reading The Hollows by Kim Harrison since I noticed them in the bookstore. Don't know how I feel. The main character reminds me of dresden a little bit (Headstrong, kind of dumb, gets in over her head) but without charm. Then her vampire friend comes into the story and i..freaking..hate..her. Every scene with the bloody vampire is like "RAWR IM AN ANIMAL" or the main character blaming herself for what the vampire did. So anyone have any better suggestions?
