I'm gonna get hosed so hard on my taxes. I was on unemployment for 6 months with no taxes being taken out and I made over $6k in one month as a sub-contractor on my 1099G.

I was thinking the same thing since I have worked basically another full time job for half the year, but I did the quick calculator and it looks like I will owe like 60 total. now i just need my other W2 to actually get it done.

I've always run Mobil 1 in my car (this last oil change was the high mileage version). It's oil change time, so I stopped by WalMart on my way home from work.

Pennzoil Platinum Pure Plus was a little cheaper this time around, and claims to be a synthetic made from a base of natural gas (yet still synthetic?). Claims to meet all kinds of OEM specs (including GM dexos1). Anyone happen to run an analysis with Blackstone with this stuff yet?

I also.. uh.. got a Fram ToughGuard oil filter :ohdear: instead of AC Delco. It's a cartridge filter, not canister, so I can actually see the guts.. and it actually includes a new o-ring for the oil filter cap. ... and now that I look at the receipt, it rang up for $2 higher than the shelf tag. :argh: (website also shows the same price as the shelf tag, so now I'm irritated)

That's pretty spiffy using natural gas as a base stock and makes it more of an actual synthetic than the highly refined products. Honestly, if they get the desired base stock it really does not mater the process unless there is a glaringly obvious reason to choose one process over another.

Filter wise, Fram makes everything from filters which are a absolute crap to products which start to compete in higher end market segments. The biggest reason I avoid their products is that product quality can vary significantly from one manufacturing location to the next. At least with a cartridge filter you can do a quick visual and see if there are any major issues (both before you install it and after you remove it.)

too this day i have a loss of sensation on some parts of my legs and the 400 year old floorboards that my father had refurbished just before have a large stain.

I have to preface that i was at a pretty bad spot in my life, and this episode led to alot of that being sorted out via therapy. I had just done my second stint as a firefighter/stretcher team leader at an aeromedical hospital in Afghanistan and was way too proud to realise that i needed help to manage some of the stuff i had seen. and also...the first step in my surgery was a bottle of Dworek Vodka.. I owe $1. The difference between owing $500 and owing $1 was keeping itemized receipts of all purchases this year for the sales tax deduction. The IRS 'standard' sales tax deduction was off by about 40%.

I've kicked the idea around of doing this a few times but it seems like the ROI in terms of time might be mind-boggling. How did you keep track of all of it, or did you shove it all in a shoebox and enter it all in at the end of the year?

I'm still waiting on a few tax documents, but I should be in line for a $3-4k return this year, based on the fact that last year was pretty similar to 2013 and that's what I got then.

It's also going to be first year I won't be spending every penny of my return to make an additional payment on my student loans too :unsmith:

You will need to explain this to me, because in the Aust system you would be due a fair bit back, given your tax is based on your total yearly earnings and your unemployment would in effect lowering your yearly earnings and thence most likely you would be getting a refund. In Michigan, you get the option to claim 10% of your unemployment as federal taxes. Assuming you aren't so destitute that giving up that 10% it isnt an option, its the way to go. I had a 4 month stint on it a few years back and I didn't end up owing anything at the end of the year because I had them claim the 10%.
