Back when AGE was airing there was a "leak" after the first few episodes claiming that the space dragons (they were still being depicted as mysterious aliens at that point) were piloted by humans from the future trying to toughen up humankind in order to prepare them for a REAL alien invasion (so it would make sense for their MSes to be cartoonishly monstrous). Supposedly this led to a bunch of hasty rewrites and the Vagans ended up being present-day humans who were mad because living on Mars gave them space cancer.
