Thanks for the sanity check; I'll sleep better.

Guess now we can start discussing the next challenge. Got two ideas. The first is gently caress THE NAMM. Premise is real simple, make a track using (not including the price of DAW and computing platform and I guess a wave editor) not more than 20 or 50$ worth of stuff. Bonus kudos if you make the whole thing with a tapedeck and poo poo you found on the side of the road.

Other idea is April fools. How this works would be that, if you want in, you post a dumb idea for a tune, such as "club anthem tribute to what ayn rand thinks kneeling buses are" or "crunk". Once enough entrants have thrown their hats in, they will each be randomly matched with someone else's horrible idea. Major league toxx action if you don't get the submission you were paired with done.

I really like the first option, but I might be biased since I used to do a lot of experimental found sounds collage pieces.

I'm partial to it myself too for a bunch of reasons. Probably chief among them is how loving easy it is in this day and age. If you have an iPad, you can get a copy of nanostudio or isequence or something for 15$ and be set, or a sequencing program and a ton of on sale synths, or a 2 or 3$ modtracker. If you, like myself and many others in this thread, are 12 years old and have a 3ds, you could do it with the m1 or ms-20 program super easy. Hell, you could be hardcore and do it with a mod tracker running on an erecycle/curbside pickup/work surplus computer and include the cost of the computer.

For the found sound side, it's also pretty easy, I've got boxes of cmos chips and passive components desoldered off of discarded electronics, garbage casios (ummm, OPTIMUS) and, having an infant child, plastic harmonicas and various toy percussion. Rocks are, incidentally, mostly free as, often times, are bits of metal.

I liked the specificness of bonerjamz, so the first idea doesn't really do it for me. If VST's are allowed (they should be), then you could literally make anything.. There's enough free/cheap stuff out there that still sounds amazing (TAL stuff for example), so it wouldn't be much of a challenge and more "just make something and submit it". We need something more restrictive!

e: Don't know how feasible it would be, but I think it could be fun if we had a small sample pack and everyone had to make something using only those samples. Whatever genre you want, but all you have to work with are some samples so you gotta stretch, filter, chop and get creative with them to make something cool. Kinda like a less restrictive "make a song using only a kick sample".

I would be so all about a sample battle, like this way more than the other ideas

I once took part in a compilation where everyone had to make a track featuring a sample from a Nicholas Cage sample pack and that was fun. Something of that same vein would be good for comedy forum Something Awful Dot Com.

Draw your own samples using less than XX samples of measurement could be an educative little romp.

The sample battle sounds more interesting. The other idea is nice in theory, but that requires tracking down a bunch of free poo poo and then learning how to use it well, which means less time actually writing music.

The sample battle seems more immediately available than the alternatives. I can contribute some samples from some of my synths.

Maybe this will inspire some people to try some trackers as opposed to their usual DAWs :)

The noise/ambient/drone thread in EW did a similar thing to the one sample pack idea using Dropbox and there were some great, varied results.

Musicradar has a bunch of free sample packs that aren't too big, could be a place to start?

That is an excellent idea, or, like Un Chein Andalou. Unfortunately, this is a democracy and democracies always act on the worst ideas, so it will be the Nick Cage sample pack.
