I'm going to try and fit a raspberry pi and an adafruit screen into an old gameboy.

I still haven't got all the parts but I was thinking about gutting some of the old game carts, cutting the pins in the PCB inside the gameboy and a cart and wiring up an microSD extension cable to the pins.

If I'm able to physically pull off such a soldering job, is there a reason electrically why this wouldn't work? I thought about wiring the pins so I can wire up some carts with different SD cards into old game carts and change OS'es by changing game carts.

Would it be wiser to leave an sd card in the pi and just bootstrap an OS from a USB key, wiring an USB cable to the cart pins?

I thought they're just electrical contacts so why wouldn't it work, right?

If there's room, I'll try to mount some microswitches under the original buttons and pin those to the GPIO. Another possibility is to gut out a simple micro-sized gamepad and try to line it up / hack it to work with the face buttons. I'm talking about an old gameboy here, so there even might be room.

Any tips before I ruin a gameboy and a perfectly good raspberry pi?

I already did something similar with an 8-bit nintendo: https://kyber.ninja/thread.php?id=7

to be fair if you learn one you'll be able to use the other without too much trouble. there's only so many things that you can do to a parametric modeling program to make it different so most of the differences are in making workflows more or less efficient.

spent a lot of time on my break thinking about a) becoming a weight loss guru and b) rodrocket

made that last night. thats my bathroom tile block. its going to be a water level.
the inside of a bend has the tiles with no grout. ill have to examaine real world tiles to work out how they do it.

the code to convert the inside/outside grid to a level is going to be challening but straightforward. the algos for making rooms is just going to be plain hard
but ive got cool ideas how its all going to run

a big in in UE4 and coming up is this physically based rendering thing, and I think the idea is that the shader controls the physics so you can't (shouldnt) create physically impossible materials (like when the specular and diffuse reflections add up to moer than the incoming light) and previously because say specular and diffuse maps were spereate it was possible. now you use an base/metal/roughness flow for the base maps and the values are based on real world numbers not just computer values. its a new thing

allegorithmuic who make substance have released two articles discussing it

http://www.allegorithmic.com/pbr-guide

if anyone is interesting in CG and especially games CG its definitely worth a look, imo

its interesting to learn, for example, that the base colour should be bwteeen (srgb) 50 and 240, because darker vcalues are created by having less light fall on an object, not havaing a darker colour, and that when the metallic component is high the base colour represents reflectivity of the metal (rather than the reflected colour for non-metaliics) so should be between 0.7-1 coz lower than that isn't something that tends to exist in real life. add roughness an d its the bomb baby

i feel so intelligent now

I've gotten somewhere
welp. a fundamental part of the procedural room gen system is in place. that is, the level is generated, and then you are spawned in it! and then, there are other portals, and you can fly into one of them, and when you do, another level is generated! wow.. such procedural

its boring as poo poo though. definitely need to make bad guys, spawn cool poo poo in there, add many types of biome, add little things to make each unique, etc.

coloured keys? and some portals can only be unlocked with keys? and it would be completely random I guess as to whether it would even be possible to open a portal at a stage in the game? and why would someone care these key portals would have to be good

also the camera management leaves a bit to be desired. I mean, this is to be expected but it’s not handling between levels gracefully. also the spawning is just appearing in thin air. I’m thinking about having the ship spawn out of the portal moving like in the portal games but it’s unnecessary. I might even have the player just teleported into somewhere random in the level

I’m thinking that between levels the camera zooms to a score/info page, and after a second or two (whatever it takes to create the level) then the player hits a key and starts the next level. gracefully concealing the level construction while giving the player some info.

I’m thinking what I might do, to make each biome more interesting, is, from an internal point of view, each biome is a separate part of the map, so if a level is spawned and it’s a nature biome, then it’s spawned over there, with some nature lighting and the nature background, but if its something else it goes somewhere else. this way there would be seamless level type changes and keep it interesting. and perhaps enable me to statically light and bake lighting onto the backgrounds? an idea anyway. I guess the biggest disadvantage will be initial load time and or memory but then again the low poly thing hardly is an issue.

Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up she was making GBS threads brown water. The more she drank, the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew, and her thirst sent her crawling to the stream to suck up more water. When she closed her eyes at last, Dany did not know whether she would be strong enough to open them again.
