ugh i went to go find some other examples of startups exploiting the poor and now i'm just really really mad. didn't find a lot of instances of them outright robbing the poor directly, but tons of them waving around poor people as a lure to get dumb white people to buy garbage with the promise that some percentage will be donated to charity not that there hasn't been some downright vile poo poo dedicated to taking poor people's money. take for example, the soocket, a soccer ball which generates electricity as it's being kicked around and stores it in an internal battery so that it can power a tiny led light. philanthropists and investors and the press loved it, and they've convinced charities to buy tens of thousands of them to hand out to poor families all over the world. except that it costs $60 (making it "the most expensive six-watt lamp on the market"), it has to be kicked around for at least thirty minutes in order to power a six-watt LED light for a couple of hours, poor production quality means that something like 30 percent of them break within a month or two, and a solar/battery lamp costs $10 and doesn't need to be kicked around for half an hour to work gonna go ahead and quote the Boston Globe here because holy poo poo quote:The Soccket also has an adapter plug to charge an iPhone4. Conceivably, a 30-minute pickup game in the African bush could be the ticket to an Internet hookup via smartphone. A connection to the Whiner Line or “Toucher and Rich” in places no one ever imagined. Such miracles.

playpump was an idea to replace hand-operated water pumps in africa with spinny playground equipment, with the idea that they would siphon off the kinetic energy from kids playing on them to operate the water pump. charities and aid organizations loved it and tens of millions of dollars were spent on building them all over africa except each one cost $14,000, the pump didn't deliver enough water even when kids were playing on it, tons of them broke down and the company was slow to fix them and refused to pay for replacing broken ones, and it turned out kids didn't like them all that much so adults ended up having to play on them since there was no manual pump option

our friend Greg Gopman, the start-up guy who once called homeless folks "hyenas" and now wants to hold a town hall to see what can be done about/for them. Gopman, the Chron's Heather Knight reports, claimed that he had a big talk with Lee about his homeless concerns. The mayor's people, however, said that wasn't so. “We took a walk on Mid-Market together and spoke on things...He explained to me that helping the homeless was always one of his big goals before he got into office and something he regrets he hasn’t been able to do more with,” Knight quotes Gopman as saying. However, according to Lee spokesperson Christine Falvey, "Lee was taking a merchant walk on Mid-Market when Gopman spotted him from afar and approached to exchange greetings. That was it," Knight says.
