Earlier in the week there was a guy asking people for game maker keys/cracks and when people told him to eat a dick he started claiming he wa making games for children in Nigeria or something and that absolved him of any moral or legal issues.

Sometimes NG is good to look at, but the games aren't as fun and suffering through them isn't as worth it. Plus... that camera Depending on your intended pacing and style, it would be interesting to contrast Bayonetta with Dark Souls. DS is much more about choosing the right weapon moveset and placing yourself correctly, so it's a different but just as deep system as the more crazy character action games.

I had an extremely talented art school senior (Ringling in FL) reach out to me about opportunities for artists in mobile games. I actually don't see this level of ambition or talent very often from students-- I think she's got the chops to go really far and I'd like to help her out, whether that's through portfolio reviews or straight up referrals to studios. I'm not too sure on our hiring needs here at my studio, but if we don't have room for her, I'm sure another studio would love to pick up a talented junior-level artist; her specialties are 2D (concept, illustration), but she's expressed an interest in branching out to 3D, as well. I'm sending her portfolio to my contacts in case there are openings at their studios -- giving this thread a shot, too. Anyone in need of a strong concept/illustration-type artist (intern or junior level) and wants to give a portfolio a look? Please PM me or bug me in the thread.

Design questions during a phone interview are incredibly stressful. "Hey, make something creative and functional right now, off the top of your head!" I know that they give you a little bit of wiggle room, and I think I gave good answers, but it's still a stressful thing to deal with.

My most stressful interview was a Skype conference(and I mean conference, there was eight people in a meeting room on the other end), being asked questions by a guy with a very thick accent and the worst connection I've ever witnessed that didn't just cut right out. After asking about three times if there was any way they could improve their sound quality I gave up in embarassment and struggled through the rest of the interview hoping I was getting enough of the gist of the questions to answer coherently.

I wouldn't say Dark Souls would work as a pure combat experience - and I think it is not really as deep as something like Bayonetta or DMC simply because the system isn't open enough to really support that much inventive play. 90% of it is just waiting for enemies to put themselves in recovery/doing telegraphed parries :x

Considering the argument was to play dark souls and bayonetta to contrast the systems I think the point was that they are radically different. It's really important as a designer too to understand a deep vs simple system and be able to identify the minimum complexity required. Complexity for complexities sake is not useful and many games use the intersection of several simple systems to create depth, as opposed to deep individual systems that do not intersect well with other systems.

Sigma-X posted:Considering the argument was to play dark souls and bayonetta to contrast the systems I think the point was that they are radically different. Certainly. My point was more that Bayonetta is literally nothing but a combat system. There's nothing else there (other than crappy mini games). Dark Souls has a vast edifice laid on top of its combat system to aid in producing interest - thus you would not expect it to be carrying as much weight, and, indeed, it is simpler in construction. That doesn't mean it's bad (it is fit for purpose), but you would need to analyse it in the context of its game - I think merely comparing the combat systems alone would be misleading! Still a worthy exercise. SurrealityCheck fucked around with this message at 06:23 on Feb 3, 2015 |

A question for UI people: is the hybrid UI designer/developer really a thing? It's hard to tell from job descriptions, I've seen a few that mention a sort of overlap but for the most part it's some variation on UI/UX 'Artist' and 'UI Engineer'. I know job titles often mean nothing so it's probably totally different in practice from studio to studio. A dude I used to work with in web development has been a 'UI Artist' at Raven for 5+ years now and though he had a little motion design work he was hired primarily due to Flash experience, I know because I worked on several large Flash projects with him back in '08-09.

Dogcow posted:A question for UI people: is the hybrid UI designer/developer really a thing? Maybe if you actually have the chops for it, and even then probably only in small studios. For instance, I have both a visual arts formation and an engineering degree, have done a fair amount of graphic and interface web design so I can pretty much do the entire UI front-end and back-end if need be. But I'm also busy doing everything else on the project and don't have much time for mocking up UI art, so we have a great UI artist on contract that does most of that work. Then instead of constantly bouncing back and forth whenever we need a new widget asset, I just grab whatever I need straight from the PSD files and put everything together. I had a similar thing going at THQ where I got to scribble some UI art from time to time when it'd be faster to ask our artist, but usually my time was more valued as a rendering programmer than as a UI artist.
