Somewhat Heroic posted:The swedes are master plumbers. Who knew? Which leads me to a question. Every NA sold Volvo I've seen has split headlights, while domestic ones typically have a single big reflector with separate bulbs for high/low beam. Is there a rule or in the US that the high and low beams have to have separate reflectors, or is it just a design tradition thing?

I'm not American, but IIRC it was some bullshit about only sealed beams allowed in the US up until about 1980. So most euro and some japanese cars you got in the US look retarded with dodgy headlights, also add the ridiculous bumpers compared to the rest of the world. sealed beam headlights were required until 1986 IIRC, Federal car law was pretty retarded for a long time.

I don't really like sealed beams (aside from being able to get a replacement for any of my jeeps off any of my other jeeps, or at the JY for basically free, or at the parts store for like ten bucks and replace it without pulling any trim or a bumper cover) but I really do like glass lenses. So glad my subaru is one of the last years to have glass headlight housings, they're still just as bright and shiny as they were new while all my subaru owning friends are annoyed by their various crummy plastic lenses, yellowed or not.

Nissan is trying another different approach to racing this year. They will be competing with a front engine, (primarily) front wheel drive LMP car. 1250hp with KERS, flow through aerodynamics and a V6 twin turbo. So what are they doing with the shock there. Mimicking the effects of an antiroll bar without a physical one?

Appears so, via hydraulics perhaps?

Could be something like that, guessing remotely adjustable as well. It took me a while to realize that is a rear, then you think about the lack of drive shaft visible and try to figure out how the hell they crammed what might essentially be a portal axle in that tiny amount of space.

It looks kinda like the variable valve timing phasers they have on the end of cams these days. I don't really see why it would have to turn anything there but the resemblance is uncanny.

That's traditionally where the rebound/compression adjusters lie, which could make sense, but I would see them as doing that electronically like everyone is now.

It's called a spool valve damper. It's pretty neat, you basically machine the passages into the valve and can very finely control the damper resistance based on flow/valve position. Gives way better control of the damping curve than a standard valve/shim/orifice setup. And yes, looks like hydraulic anti-roll.
