Tabzz was not the problem with Alliance, Rekkles is probably a superior player but adding him does nothing to fix the obvious problems of the team.

I had Yellowstar and didn't start him in week 1 and it cost me a loss (curse you to hell IWD and your 70 points on loving Nunu week.) Never making that mistake again. Steeel-Star for lyfe. I can't decide if I should start TSM or Elements next week. Elements are boring to watch but they make a lot of points because EU games go so long, but TSM has a complete joke of a week. Decisions. Decisions.

1) Rekkles is like 8 years old. Of course he's immature. 2) "THINGS AREN'T GOING THE WAY WE EXPECTED ABANDON SHIP" is the most hilarious thing 2 weeks into a season. The gulf between gaming PR and sports PR, it is how you say, extreme. Sometimes that works to our advantage, but mostly it reminds me that all of these players are literal children, and some of them are barely half my age. You definitely don't need to be a good player to be a good broadcaster. I don't even think you need to be a good player to be a good color commentator. In Riot's situation I think it helps, because unlike a professional sport the vast majority of your audience can instantly apply tips and tricks (less mechanical stuff like juggling buff aggro, ward spots, etc) but it's not a must-have. My favorite casters are Doa, MonteCristo, Deman, and Joe, and they're all like Silver/Gold players. Riv is infuriating because you need to be good at communicating useful information succinctly. I would never accuse someone of being a bad caster because they weren't a high-skill player. That's one of the least relevant requirements.

I'm missing something I think, but what makes it immature to say that Rekkles is a bit disappointed with Alliance? Like isn't it allowed or fair that he airs his views on it or I am missing something here?

It's totally standard playerspeak to say something along the lines of "we know we have plenty of things to work on", but it's weird to be in 2nd place and be vague and mopey and make a comment about "the organization". Part of that is on me, I guess? I still haven't adjusted to how incredibly volatile teams are season to season, forget year over year. I don't think Rekkles is being immature, necessarily, it's just hilarious how obvious it was that getting Rekkles wasn't going to fix any of Elements' issues.

Wickd and Shook still aren't the most solid players. Shutting down Wickd is as simple as banning Irellia. There's nothing wrong with the rest of the team.

It's just that Rekkles seems to think he's rising above and deserving of better than all of these systemic problems in the teams he's in, when it's rapidly becoming obviously that he's a part of them.

Last season someone in Alliance (I forget who) talked about how he felt isolated inside the team and they weren't friends and wouldn't hang out in off time. The members treat it as a job and are super serious about it, which I think contributes to a lack of communication inside the team and I'm confident there's a kind of hierarchy inside and Rekkles may just feel like his input isn't being taken seriously because he's the most junior player.

Tabbz. I'm pretty sure it's partly because the 3 older guys have big egos and are very complacent in their way of doing things and approach, and have a set pattern of socialising. I think it's pretty hard to come in as a younger guy there unless you're very similar to them in personality as well as approach.

I, too, have noticed Rekkles is a teenage professional video game player who might not behave like an emotionally mature human adult. While this may manifest in different ways, it is an attribute many LCS pros share with him. Elements being the old boys club it is, it seemed obvious from the start incorporating Rekkles into that whole circle would need to be a mutual effort. As much as this kind of acting out isn't helping, lucky for Elements they have a bunch of time to start figuring this poo poo out.

Rekkles is one of the hungriest players in League, and he left FNC because the team was mostly veterans who were bored with league and didnt commit enough time to it. He went to ALL expecting it to be better and it turns out that when you go to a team with Froggen it also includes Wickd, Shook, and Nyph. I think their gaming house also hasnt had internet for the past month so its probably a bit jarring expecting to go to a big org full of motivated people and finding only Froggen is really as motivated, the rest treat it like work, and the org can't even get internet. This is like a case study in the grass is always greener, but I can't kill Rekkles over it.

Sounds more like SEA since China's trying hard to appeal to western stuff the last few years. Though I remember some shitstorm about south korea not allowing women to play some games professionally/play them in their own seperate league.

To be fair to them I can understand their concern, the NA and EU scenes are getting completely destroyed by all of these 5 lesbian teams, and we have the insane total of one transgender player out of all of LCS and challenger

Always found it odd how few trans players there are in strategy games like sc2 and this, coming from the fighting game scene where openly gay and trans pros are more common and accepted.

All I remember from the shitstorm, think it was like, a year ago max, was that either there were different hearthstone leagues for men and women, or women weren't allowed to participate at all.

Gendered leagues are dumb as hell and not progressive at all. They exist to protect male spaces, not to lift women up. edit: On a different note, could anyone recommend in-depth reading on competitive strategies in League? I want to better understand why teams choose to do things like lane swap, jungle-follow, etc, what the risks of these strategies are, and how they're executed. Really, anything having to do with advanced competitive strategy in League would be helpful. I don't mind if it's your blog. Typical Pubbie fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Feb 3, 2015 |
