I'd get one with as many knobs and faders as you can afford for tactility and less fiddling with the mouse (once you've got it mapped). If you have space go for 49 keys- I often find 25 just isn't enough. Also I guess it depends what soft synth(s) you were planning on using most with it- the more parameters, the more controls you will likely want.

At the risk of sounding GASsy, if you are serious(ish) about this, get the best thing you can afford rather than doing what I did and buying a crappy M-Audio, finding it lacking and having to get something better a few months after.

Cool thanks, I guess my budget is around $400 - $500 really but I'd be willing to drop a few more on it if need be. Any recommendations in that price range?

Avoid the Alesis boards. They are cool on paper, but buggy in person and their support is THE WORST. Unfortunately.

Who fucking cares?

Kork Taktile 49 is in that range, and I like mine pretty well. The knobs and faders and the stock setup seems more aimed at controlling a DAW for mixing than controlling virtual instruments, though.

How do you send bank changes from an Octatrack to a Blofeld? The program change knob works but not the bank change. I also tried assigning knobs to midi cc 0 and 32, no luck! :(

I realize none of you ever listen to me but.... No matter how many knobs and faders you get, they will never be enough and they will -never- be laid out the way you want them to be. and you're going to have to print out, like, labels or masks for -every- different soft synth you use or else you're never going to remember which knob goes to what.
So get something with keys that you like and really just worry about that. Maybe get a berhinger bc-2000 because it -almost- has enough knobs to satiate.

The M-1 app on the DS was really good if you wanted to sequence music, I'm assuming the same is true for the 3ds version. The 3ds ms-20 app is pretty good to make, eh... sorta stockish analog noises with. I'd recommend both over bravely default, but unless you actually want to make music with them I'd recommend them both under a link between worlds.

http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/j4VgyH_Uce0wHj2_L6xHl6ZoRHpXmwKl

This is the early '90s workstation thingy, you can make actual music with it no problem, though it may sound a little dated and there's not a lot you can do to patch the individual sounds

http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/EsVE_ldkt5IaTlJYN7iqans9kQaKZgAx

This is the analog noise factory. Also pretty useful for making actual music with, but not as good for that as the other one. Pretty good to learn the basics of analog synthesis if you haven't played around with it before. Probably the more fun of the two to play around with.

http://bravelydefault.nintendo.com/

This is anime garbage and please don't feed the corpse of square enix for the sake of nostalgia.

1) There are two Korg apps (M1 for rompler goodness and DSN-12 for DS10 synth goodness)
2) They're both great, but pretty clunky to use
3) Bravely Default is also great

DSN-12 is definitely easier to use than M1, but they both share the same base and most of the interface. My biggest gripe is how you have to structure an entire song made with just loops and no color coding or anything, so it can get confusing if you're doing more than a 30 second loop. They're both fun to play around with, but if you just want the sounds you should go for something like Korg Legacy Collection.
On the other hand, people are doing stuff like this with them:

gently caress now i want the other one aaaaaaaaaaaa okay i am leaving this thread until i buy one because im just going to get more conflicted
but before i go...............
bravely default may be a return to form and invoke nostalgia for some but im not the kind of noobler who gets hung up on "nostalgia" as i see it as just a buzzword at this point somebody can be nostalgic for something and the game may try to play on that but does that make game bad?? ffs of all the things to critique about a game nostalgia is the most irrelevant thing and anybody who judges a game on that is a dumbass no offense to the people who judged the game based on it in this thread because you guys are cool for helping me lol i mostly see the nostalgia bullshit from people who started from gcn and up.... makes me wonder..............

MnM here, should be similar because elektron doesn't change much. MSB(0) works save it won't choose bank A for whatever reason. LSB(32) works as expected. This is both sending the changes immediately as well as plocking them to trigless trigs and hitting play.
Make sure you've got the CC set properly for the track/channel and set to the blofeld's channel. Make sure the blofeld is on a later firmware, I remember there being bugs with bank change on earlier ones. I'm running 1.15.

It's 0-7 for the banks A-G, btw.
