I mean, to be fair to Rand Paul (though I don't want to), the core ideal of libertarianism is that nobody should force anyone else to do something, even if something is obviously the right thing to do and a danger to others if not done. Since the issue is prominent, it's probably going to be part of the national conversation for a while and all of the obvious solutions to a public health problem would involve what libertarian folks would construe as the government using force. In order to appear consistent with his principles, he has to comment and by the standards of where a libertarian could go with the issue, it was a pretty mild one. in summary, kill you're children rand paul 2016

If you campaign against vaccination I think you should be shot without trial. And this isn't hyperbole.

Am I correct in thinking that the Republican candidates from states with high immigration will have difficulty in the primaries when competing with candidates from states with few immigrants? While getting elected in states like Florida and Texas requires having an immigration policy that isn't completely insane, I get the feeling that generally the people who vote in Republican primaries will be strongly against these policies that were necessary at the state level.

Even if vaccines did have the 1 in 66 chance of causing autism or whatever, is that worse than exposing your kid to a slew of life threatening diseases, especially in a world where a bunch of other people aren't getting vaccinated?

If a parent objects to a vaccine, doctors should be required to show them an array of pictures of children with smallpox. If they still object, then maybe child services should get involved.

They're literally "contact with these people may kill you" untouchable because they haven't loving been vaccinated. Do you think the US State Department requires specific immunizations for state travel to certain regions for shits and giggles?

What is with all this Republican anti-vax poo poo anyway? Aren't most of these anti-vax people kind of crunchy, new agey, Whole Foods shopping granola liberals? Who generally tend to vote Democrat, and probably won't switch sides? Why are they going after those votes?

If you're Rand Paul, you're specifically counting on luring some of those people - particularly well-to-do techies with similar leanings - to your side using fake libertarianism, and will go after any kind of foothold you can get. Rand has to be counting on reflexively anti-establishment people in California and the Rockies to get anywhere, given that there's too much competition in the South and the midwest and northeast won't care for his poo poo. No idea what Christie was thinking, though. Should be trying to consolidate the moderate vote, not reaching out to fringe idiots.
