Yes. It's a Donnie Darko rip-off. Hard not to notice, really. Also, lol at your supposed anime reference. Like. It's a tornado, mate. It's almost like a sharknado, but without sharks. Maybe the real shark... is you? Makes you think. Oh, and the opening scene is clearly an Alan Wake reference, because there's a lighthouse, which is completely unique and a staple of the video game called Alan Wake (not to be confused with its spinoff Alan Wake's American Nightmare.

Honestly I only think its 'different' insofar as most media tends to exaggerate certain qualities simply because they need to get character traits across in a more speedy fashion. I'm sure if they had sixty hours of gameplay they'd probably tone down some of the character traits, but in an episodic game like this it makes sense to emphasize certain character traits to get them across in a more efficient manner. I'm a decade and some removed from high school and it sure as gently caress felt pretty accurate to me.

Fun thing about the game is constantly being reminded of your own teens - it's really cringeworthy. I was laughing my rear end off and kinda feeling how close to home it hits with the Max and Warren dynamic. There's far too much acoustic guitar and not nearly enough nu-metal to accurately emulate my life as a teenager. If somebody could mod this game to replace all the songs with Linkin Park, then I'd probably be reminded of my high school years.

So my girlfriend got this last night and played through it. The concept intrigued me, the anime style didn't, but the sheer amount of cursing was what struck me. I found it hilarious, because it felt like the actors were either forcing the emotion through cursing or hesitant to curse in the first place. I watched her play a few sections, and my one gripe was the pregnancy test thing. You can pick it up, gain the info, reverse time, still have the info and suffer no consequences. There didn't seem to be any reason to stick with the timeline where someone got pissed at you. Most of the characters appeared really unlikable, but kind of funny in how lovely they are.

I dunno, I have a feeling the entire game is going to be fairly toothless when it comes to actions and consequence. I see a lot of people falling into the same trap they did with early Walking Dead episodes (myself included!) - that because says it adapts mean it actually will. The time travel thing is neat, but it strikes me as a very meta way of seeing everything more than anything that's going to heavily impact the plot.
