The people living off Taco Bell are the 16-30 crowd who just eat fast food everyday and don't care, and Taco Bell is probably preferred because all the other places are closed. To them a Doritos taco is just the best of both worlds.

I remember the day when some friends of mind quit eating Taco Bell after eating there literally 4 times in one day and suddenly realized that 4th meal did not mean your 4th fake Mexican meal of the day and they didn't want to walk up 5 years down the line obese, diabetic, and full of shame and disgust.

Also, this millennial insanity thing went on way too long when it basically sums up to "people raised on the internet buy things differently" and the people making said campaigns just google tumblr and instagram and assume those are representative of the demographic.

To be honest this says way more about the sleaziness of Gawker than it does about Coca-Cola's marketing.

You can't create a viral campaign - it's a crapshoot whether it will actually go viral so the incessant screaming often leads to poorly thought out execution.

Funnily enough, Coke's last interactive campaign was creating your own custom "Share a Coke With..." can. It took a couple of days before they started adding a word-filter but by then everybody had already expressed their desire to share a Coke with Hitler.

I'm pretty sure that critical thinking is an important part of education and you need to be able to think critically to understand the effect media has on you. So I'm gonna make an off the wall assumption that Millennials are more keen to the tricks advertisers use, even if it doesn't change their consumption habits.

It's hipper than most other fast food places so they have that crowd of young people.

Although I find even that group overlaps with the bitter group. My girlfriends sister was on a rant about how terrible ramen is for you (which is true) and then in the same rant mentioned Taco Bell quesaritos as being delicious and she loves eating them. Fun fact: it takes 3 packs of Maruchan ramen to equal one quesarito.

Let me ask this to everyone, does anyone find the commercials where the subject in the commercial is "elite" effective?

Think back to that Cadillac commercial (we work more than every other country!) the National Rental Car (You don't have to talk to humans, and I don't want to!) or the for profit colleges (YOU are elite, you don't need to work no desk job, come get our business degree!).

Do those work on anyone? Does that make anyone want to buy that product? For me it just guarantees I'll never seek out those products because they are for assholes. What does the research say?

One tactic some "elite" ads employ is prestige appeal, and it is very effective in certain demographics.

As for the for-profit colleges, it depends on which one(s) you're referring to. There are thousands of them in the country, and they don't all share the same marketing strategies.

Among the most (in)famous for-profit colleges is the University of Phoenix, which spends an immense amount of money on advertising annually. It's tough to say to what degree they're getting their money's worth, though, because factors like low job placement rates are affecting consumer opinion.

On a personal note, it would kill me to know that a hefty percentage of my super-high tuition was being spent on putting annoying loving ads everywhere.

The British Army recruitment slogan is 'Be the Best'.

Then again, I also remembered hearing that when international tensions are high, they tweak the advertising to be about how good you need to be, whereas in relative peace it's about how good they can make you. Because Johnny Jingo isn't actually a very useful guy to be a soldier.

While it works / doesn't work to varying degrees for me and mine in general, the one way to piss everyone I know off is to play the "if you don't like it, you're not among the elite" card. Hennessy ran an ad some years back that all but said "your palate isn't refined if you don't like the VO cognac we're shilling". Hennessy VO tastes like diluted battery acid to me (their VSOP tastes slightly more of something non-toxic, but still rear end), and I like cognac, so that one put me off the brand permanently.

That seems to be more and more common, companies trying to objectively assert their mediocre brand is clearly superior and haters gonna hate.

Rather then "Our new trucks passed the 5 star safety test with flying colors" now its "Buy our new trucks because you're a man and can buy what you want"

One company that does weird commercials that works in Sonic, because the advertising well outside their restaurants radius and so if don't live near a Sonic and keep seeing Sonic commercials it becomes "holy gently caress I want to eat at Sonic at least once to see the deal"

At the end of the vid, the dude taking all the risks reveals that he has a donated heart. The campaign was to get people to decide whether they want to be an organ donor or not. "Are you already a donor?"

This ad was pulled after complaints from train drivers who get heart attacks from people pulling stunts like the dude does at the beginning of the vid :v:

The controversy was probably fully intentional. There was even a bit of hype regarding the fact famous director Dick Maas made the ad. The controversy certainly made the news and everyone talked about it.

But effective? I can imagine someone going "nope, not gonna be a donor because my organs would extend the life of a guy like him, who clearly doesn't appreciate or deserve them".

It was part of a campaign funded by the Dutch Ministry of Health.

You know what worked for me? I'd always wanted to be a donor and my friends and family knew that, but I'd never made it official because of the hassle to actually register. The hassle was probably a lot less than I imagined it to be, but it still became one of this things I never got around to actually do.

Then they had this online campaign that crossed my facebook feed about how it took less than a minute now online, with your DigiD, so it took literally 20 seconds of clicking 2 links, logging in, clicking 2 more buttons and presto, I received my donor card in the mail a couple of days later. I shared the same link on my wall and a couple of friends commented how they finally did it as well.

We Came as Romans have more or less the same target audience as One Direction.

All snobbery aside, Spotify is amazing at playing the exact opposite of whatever you listen to. I listen to a lot of metal, but 90% of the ads I get are for pop songs. One of the only times I've ever heard something heavy in a Spotify ad was when somebody was listening to something pop (I want to say Beyonce) in the same room and suddenly loving Meshuggah started playing in between songs.

So for everyone curious why Spotify ad targeting sucks its because Spotify wont let it be good. No, seriously, when you negotiate a deal with them they wont let you have any data about who it ran against and don't allow retargeting so when you buy Spotify ads your limited to a hope and a prayer that it targets who your trying to reach. The reason you primarily only hear ads for pop and other general market stuff is because those are the only people comfortable with leaving Spotify in charge and having little data to back it up.
