Playoff overtime with first point scored works. But then you'll just end up with castling while Han and the decimator circle each other.

Plus it punishes small ships even more than the current meta does. Play for time, suddenly Fat Han is a loving force of nature and Decimators are overtime EXTREME compared to a swarm list only needing to lose one dinky little TIE or Z-95 to lose the game. Pass.

Can I make a suggestion if you are going to go for Kyle Katarn and A-Wings with Prockets: try and see what happens when you mix Jake Farrell with Kyle. This was pointed out to me by a friend: with Kyle Katarn on his side, Jake can do the equivalent of 5 actions.

If you have Jake with PtL, you can do the following:

1) Spend Jake's Regular Action to evade (for example, it also works with a target lock).
2) At the start of the combat phase, assign a focus token from Kyle to Jake
3) Immediately Boost or Barrel Roll using Jake's ability
4) Push the Limit off the Boost/Barrel Roll to perform a Focus Action
5) Do either a Boost or Barrel Roll (whichever you didn't do in step 3)

You end up with two focus (one for attack, one for defense), a target lock/evade (depending on if you want to make sure to have punch or be more survivable) and have both a boost and barrel roll available.

EDIT: Also, the above also means that you don't have to get Veteran Instinct on Jake, because he will do his barrel roll/boost after everyone else has moved, no matter the PS. Additionally, he can still do all that even after he bumps (minus one evade token/target lock). It's hilarious what you can do with Jake when you pair him up this way.

#5 doesn't happen because PTL gave you a stress, preventing you from taking free actions. In order to get all 5 you need to focus with your regular action, which limits your combat phase repositioning.

Negative. You can't take the same action twice in one turn, which means that only the first two focus tokens will matter, and using PTL will not get you a second boost or barrel roll because you've already done both.

That's what I'm saying. To get 5 actions you need to:

1) Action Focus
2) Free Boost/Barrel Roll
3) Kyle Focus
4) Free Barrel Roll/Boost
5) PTL Evade or Target Lock

My point is that you can't get both your reposition actions in the combat phase.

#5 does work because the boost/roll triggers and resolves in the middle of the push the limit resolution before the stress token is assigned.

Objectives would be cool but I can imagine turreted ships still have the advantage since they could circle around objectives while picking off the enemy. If it's first to the objective, phantoms and interceptors would rule.

Has anyone here tried any kind of tournament with a sideboard/card switchout option? To allow people to bring some answers to some problem skew lists while not burdening players with the point loss in case they never come up and the answers aren't needed?

I also would love to see tournaments integrate scenarios much more into the format, though that may just be the Warmachine player in me coming out.

Yep, this is why #5 works. It's covered in the FAQ:

quote:

Free actions, such as a free action granted from Squad Leader, can trigger Push the Limit. This can result in an action interrupting another effect, causing that effect to finish resolving later. For example, if a ship performs a free barrel roll action granted by Expert Handling, it could use that action as a trigger for Push the Limit. After Push the Limit resolves, Expert Handling finishes resolving.

So what happens is that the 'free action' part of PtL resolves, you get the ability from Jake kicking in and THEN you resolve the stress-giving part of PtL.

Fetterkey posted:

Significantly improved time limits would mean you'd have to decrease the number of rounds of swiss to such an extent that losing even 1 game might potentially prevent you from gaining the top 8, especially if you had a large number of players. We played 6 rounds of swiss in our store championship and it took all day.

On the other hand, many people can take one day off their weekend, but not two. As well as that, it forces people that need to travel to attend to either get a room in a hotel or be forced to do the trip twice (there were more than a few people coming to London for the store championship I attended).

This makes me think of the shot clock in basketball. For those unfamiliar with the sport, it had a similar problem in that if one team gained a significant lead and they were adept enough ball handlers, they could effectively play keep away for the rest of the game. This turned a great spectator sport into a total slog and the shot clock is very effective at remedying this. The shot clock in the NBA requires that a team takes a shot at the basket and at least hits the rim before a 25 second clock expires, otherwise they turn over the ball to the defense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_clock

There is also a rule in the NBA where you need to get the ball across half court (and it stays there) in the first 5 seconds of the shot clock, to give an advantage to the defense. Turnovers are more likely in the half court as people dribble into traps.

As an aside, one thing I find fascinating about professional basketball is how balanced offense and defense typically are. Usually the normalized scoring percentages sit around 50% per possession (in a game where most scoring options get you 2 points, the league often averages around a point a possession).

Anyways, would be interesting if there could be a shot clock type of mechanic introduced to X-Wing competitive play. It shares some aspects with basketball/soccer in my mind, just no ball (yet). It probably wouldn't be thematic, but neither is running down the clock for time.

Yeah, the shot clock could be a decent addition. I was thinking more like American football or FIFA where you could effectively play keep away depending on how much time was left. Though American football would be less analogous since you have determined start and stop plays in that.

I feel running down the clock is thematic enough since there are situations when both sides want to keep a package or VIP from being captured the other side. Hell, the B wings were experimental imperial ships until they were stolen and reverse engineered as I recall. (Though that's the legends campfire story so who knows?)

I feel like a 'shot clock' unless done in a way that isn't actually that would be even more benefit to turret ships. Then you wouldn't even need to appreciatively change how you play, and your opponent would be forced to deal with suboptimal positioning or face penalties/loss while also having to deal with the things that make big ships good besides turrets.

The Irish can't drink. What you always have to remember with the Irish is they get mean. Virtually every Irish I've known gets mean when he drinks.
There's a big distinction between deliberate slow play and playing keep away, which is important. One is decidedly unsporting, while the other can be a lot of fun for both players.

An example of the fun one- in my second game on Saturday I killed off dude's 2 Blue Sq. Pilots really quickly, then managed to drive my Decimator off the board, as I'm a dummy. The game then came down to me chasing Chewie around the board with Whisper. That was relatively entertaining. My opponent could have simply slowed down his decision making and slow played for the modified win- as I'd lost more points than him, but that would have been a pretty miserable 50 minutes.

I also had a great experience at my tournament Sunday. 2nd game, similiar happened. I was running Outrider w hlc and Lando in the backseat, Jake the Snake with proton rockets, and airen cracken.

I was facing another Outrider w/ HLC, and Chewie with 3po andd other crap.

In the first two turns, my escorts got blown up fast, but not before Jake dumped the rockets into his outrider and stripped the shields. What followed was me trying to keep my outrider at range 3, and whittling them down, with Lando rolls coming up clutch (Always got at least one evade token, and most of the time either a second one, or a focus). In the end I had three hits left on my outrider, and I barely managed to blow Chewie up, 2 minutes before time expired

EDIT: Also, fun fact on the prockets. One game, they almost one shotted a b-wing, and in another, they one shotted a hwk.

Even without the events of forty years ago, I think man would still be a creature that fears the dark.
I've played games before where the rule has been "TO decides who wins if time is called" and had it be good, but this is obviously very unsuitable for serious play because of all the opportunities for bias/collusion/not trusting the TO.

It's one of those absolute monarchy situations where it's fine as long as the monarch is but remains ripe for ridiculous abuse as soon as you get someone running the thing who is even a little bit more fallible.
