So, there are still a few Store Championships left in the area that I'm hoping to attend. Last week's list got brutally massacred when my green dice came up collectively blank for the entire three first rounds (8 evades total, in three full rounds). Next time I want to have a slightly better chance to not die like a little bitch when the dice tell me to gently caress off. With that in mind:

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Chardaan Refit (-2)

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Chardaan Refit (-2)

Blackmoon Squadron Pilot (29)
Fire Control System (2)
R7 Astromech (2)

Blackmoon Squadron Pilot (29)
Fire Control System (2)
R7 Astromech (2)

Total: 100 points

Once Scum and Villainy comes out, the Greenss will drop down to Prototypes in order to fit Autothrusters for some fantastically difficult to hit ships, while retaining non-negligible levels of firepower thanks to the E-wings.

So apparently this is working fairly well for me. I've played a few serious games with it, and so far it's come very close to beating a Leebo/Chewie list that was flown very well. Leebo managed to dodge two damage with Determination, or he'd have gone under and I'd have had two ships left to take care of a six hit Chewie. The ability to drat near ignore the Falcon because it couldn't hit a drat thing was fantastic. This list works very well against small numbers of ships, because the evade tokens get proportionally more effective the less attacks you face each turn. The next game I played was against one of the best players in the area running Ten Numb with five Bandits. A Bandit evaporated on the first turn and another lost shields, while every shot except an unblockable crit from Ten got caught by an evade token and some decent green dice. What followed next was a hilarious furball where everything bumped into everything and the Blackmoons' FCS and R7 meant they could pick a target and effectively make it useless for shooting while the A-wings skirted the edge and took potshots. With half his ships unable to inflict any damage at all it was only a matter of time before I could take down Ten and he conceded with two Zs left against two Es and an A.

Actually the 120+ min play time of Armada has scared me off for now.

Couple questions:

Are there any different length pegs out there for the standard bases? Would be cool to have some ships at different levels. I've seen some DIY conversions of B-Wing bases with magnets that let them rotate and it looks so sick but I can't make physical things gud :negative:

Anyone printerstudio'd alternate art for the pilot cards? Is that :filez:? In most cases I would prefer some art of the actual pilot than the ship. I've seen the promos with stills from the films, and those are kind of cool but many pilots don't have a live action counterpart and I'd prefer everything to look consistent

My B-Wing rotates on the little peg-adapter in the back straight out of the box. I just wish I could keep the cockpit orientation right, I like the look of a B-Wing with the body of the ship to the left of the cockpit (like when it's s-foils are closed) with the cockpit in a normal orientation.

Working on a new list for local Store Championships. Here's the base right now:

Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
“Whisper” + Veteran Instincts + Advanced Cloaking Device (37)
97pts total

My questions would be this: Is it worth leaving out Recon Specialist/Fire Control System on Whisper so that I shoot before other PS 9 pilots? Also, is this a terrible list?

Welp, here goes.

Idea #1) Rogue Squadron Pilot, X-wing. PS6, Elite Pilot Talent slot. 25 points.

This makes for a 1:1 skill counterpart with Royal Guard Pilot Interceptors, which is sorely lacking on the rebel side of the field. Generic pilots with EPTs are relatively rare on the Rebel side of the field, counting among their number the Green Squadron Pilot and no others. Generic pilots with mid-high PS are non-existent (Dagger, Red, and Grey Squadron pilots all top out at four and are the highest skill generics on the Rebel side of the board). Contrast with Imperials, who have generic pilots with EPTs in the form of Saber and Black Squadron pilots, as well as Royal Guard Pilots. Imperial generic pilots that match or exceed Rebel skills levels are commonplace (Saber, Black, Gamma, and Storm Squadron Pilots all match the Rebel generic pilot max pilot skill. Shadow Squadron Pilots (Phantoms) at 5 and Royal Guard Pilots at 6 both easily surpass any non-unique Rebel pilot, and quite a few of the unique ones). Therefore, the Rogue Squadron Pilot fills a definite hole in Rebel squad building capability, offering a mid-high Pilot Skill ship, and bringing with it an Elite Pilot Talent. The points cost is balanced against similar skill X-wing pilots (Biggs, PS5 with a powerful ability (same cost); Garven, PS6 with an ability but no EPT slot (one point cheaper)). Points cost is also balanced against Imperial counterparts (Royal Guard Pilot with Push the Limit; 2x Academy Pilots (roughly)).

Idea #2 comes with it some base assumptions. These assumptions are as follows:

A) X-wings are currently non-competitive in the tournament meta for X-wing. Much of this reason is because X-wings cannot reposition after maneuvers. Along with Lambda Shuttles, Z-95s, and Y-Wings, they are alone in this trait.
B) Current options available to X-wings in order to reposition after maneuvers are prohibitively expensive and overcosted.
  • Engine Upgrades are relatively balanced for use on large ships. However, on small ships four points for a boost represents a significant cost for a movement gain of barely half that of large ships. Therefore, Engine Upgrades are not cost effective on small ships due to a combination of high individual cost, and due to a reduced effectiveness for that cost as it relates to large ships.
  • Expert Handling is, on its own and in a vacuum, not a bad option to get access to barrel roll as an action. However, its opportunity cost (Predator, Push the Limit) and its cost for X-wings that are already relatively slow to recover from stress without additional upgrades make it less effective than it otherwise might be.
  • Combining both boost and barrel rolls on X-wings are impossible with any reliability. The only current way to achieve both is to mount R7-T1, Expert Handling, and Experimental Interface. R7-T1 is situational and cannot be used against turreted ships with any reliability, and also relies on the order of pilot skill to even trigger, let alone be useful. Additionally, the combined cost of these upgrades is a whopping 8 points, the opportunity cost consists of Predator/Push the Limit/any other Astromech, and in order to actually pull off both the X-wing must take two stress and be significantly impaired before doing it again.

That out of the way, Idea #2) T-65B X-wing. Title. 5 points. "Your action bar gains the [boost] and [barrel roll] icons. In order to equip this card you must have the [Elite Pilot Talent] upgrade icon."

This is costed as it is for several reasons. One is so that it doesn't immediately undercut engine upgrade. Engine upgrade is still cheaper for getting just boost, and Expert Handling is still cheaper for getting just barrel roll. It's also one of the more expensive upgrade cards available, and the second most expensive title next to Outrider. At 5 points, one of the hypothetical Rogue Squadron Pilots above is a full 30 points in order to be able to boost or barrel roll, and is a full 8 points more expensive than a Royal Guard Pilot who can do the same in exchange for two shields, one less agility, and a worse dial. This points cost also allows a Rogue Squadron Pilot to mount this title and Push the Limit for an even 33 points. This permits up to three of this ship in one list, and matches up in terms of expected role and combat effectiveness to four Royal Guard TIEs with Push the Limit. The title is expensive enough, and with strict enough requirements for use that fitting four ships into a list is impossible. The absolute cheapest available X-wing that can use this card is 29 points (Red Squadron Pilot or Tarn Mison, R2-D6, Title) and a maximum of one X-wing cheaper than 30 points can be used in this way because R2-D6 is a unique astromech. Attempting to fit an R2 Astromech onto each fighter is impossible to help with the stress from Push the Limit without reducing the number of ships or only using one (in the process giving up the rather vital initiative bid). Even with an R2 Astromech, the Royal Guard TIE and principal counterpart has a vastly superior dial, including the significant white hard 1 maneuver, variable speed K-turns, and a greater straight line green movement potential. With Push the Limit and an R2 Astromech, the closest that an X-wing can ever hope to come to matching an Interceptor's maneuverability (and still failing, while being less agile on defense) is a full 9 points more expensive than the Royal Guard Pilot's 25 points.

As an additional balance example, take Wedge, and give him the works just described. The total comes to 38 points for the title, PtL, and an R2 Astromech (Opportunity costs: Predator, any other Astromech). For comparison, take Soontir. At 27 points, PtL brings him up to 3. Royal Guard TIE title may be used to mount a Shield Upgrade and a Targeting Computer, for a grand total of 36 points. With an arguably superior pilot ability (Wedge's merely serves to match the offense/defense available to each ship in a one on one fight), Soontir has one less shield, every single action that the X-wing has in addition to an Evade action for superior defensive ability, and a superior dial in every phase, for two fewer points. Given that a shield upgrade is 4 points, two points difference to account for the evade action (Millenium Falcon title puts it at 1 point) and the extra dial options (hard 1, green 4 forward, white 5 forward, variable K-turn) matches up well.

Thoughts?

You could also use the Falcon or the Outrider and play Edge of the Empire instead, where the players are all unaffiliated with the imperials and the rebels.

I might actually steal this idea.

Edit: Expanding on it.

Each player could pick a ship and they get the basic pilot card for it, then as they level up they can buy upgrades/increase their pilot skill. You can still have a narrative of missions and it gives you the flexibility to come up with unique mission objectives. It might not work for a long campaign but could be a fun way to do a few linked missions.

Whoa this is such a good idea.

Could either run it as an Edge of Empire RPG with all PCs being pilots and resolve combat as flight missions like the Wraith Squadron novels.

Or I could have the players be station commanders in charge of deploying and allocating ships and whatnot.

Hmm...

Even without the events of forty years ago, I think man would still be a creature that fears the dark.
I've been thinking about the tournament meta issue more recently, and I think the best thing they could do for the game would be to make the following simple change:

-Partial credit is awarded for damaged ships at the end of the game. You gain points equal to (the ship's point cost * the amount of damage on it)/its total hull+shields for ships that are damaged but not destroyed.

This would make two-ship lists less enticing and likely eliminate or at least nerf the various gamesmanship lists that are based on killing one ship and then stalling.

I of course think the game would be EVEN BETTER with the additional change of:

-Phantom is banned
-YT-2400 is banned

But that seems very unlikely, given that FFG doesn't want to tell people they can't play with ships they bought.

Honestly, lots of any list is player skill. If the best players are all phantom players, they've got good odds at winning anyway. But the Decimator is screwed in that matchup, and even whisper has to take care or get blasted by a ton of dice.
