It definitely lubricates it, so you don't want to run it dry. Does it cool it? Sure, can't avoid it. Does it need to cool it? Dunno but I haven't had issues with any of my jeeps and they all have 150k+ on the clock and have been run dry at least a half dozen times each, probably more like a dozen, since the fuel gauges are nonfunctional and I am bad at remembering to gas up.

I've been there, SURPRISE 2,000 MILE ROAD TRIP to move my mother, I know it's a bad idea but I've got nowhere else to get the cash on short notice. But you can be damned sure every cent I could spare went to paying it back ASAP. I was caught up in a mass firing two weeks ago, and my landlord has asked me to move out so he can sell my house to his granddaughter, so I'm also unemployed and scrounging. But I was homeless a little over a year ago, so I pretty much fell back into the old routine of minimal spending. Quit smoking cold-turkey ( ), stretching my food budget 'till it breaks, all resources directly allocated towards job hunting. $150 left in my bank account and I'm going to make it last. But I'm biased now. I've starved in the streets, so anyone close to the same situation and not in full-out zero entertainment minimal cash expenditure panic mode just comes off as a contemptible fool. Even as I remember being all "Hey I got a hundred bucks to spare, gently caress my overdue bills let's go have some fun!" before my homeless stint. (you're a good man STR.)

I never quite got to starving, but I've done the payday loan poo poo before... and I did live in my car for a few months. .. until it got stolen. You know what's weird? I still occasionally get a twinge to go sleep in my car. I often nap in it during my break at work - the passenger side seat folts flat, and it's mild enough that open windows + open back doors + toss a movie on Netflix on the laptop or phone = this in a hurry

I was only out on the streets for about two weeks, before my brother and my part-time boss organized a goddamned manhunt to trawl Lubbock, Texas for my sorry rear end. Two very eye-opening weeks. I cared for my grandmother through her slow decline into dementia for ten years. I took her death... badly.

Anybody here have experience with CANbus sniffing and decoding?

Sniffing and decoding not so much, but I've read through most of the ISO and SAE standards on automotive CAN for work and implemented a non-OBD-port-visible automotive chassis management CAN network. What make/model/year/engine/transmission vehicle are you looking at and what do you want to get out of it?

I've seen some ls swapped BMW guys use arduino shields to convert from analog to CAN, and other way around, but it looks a bit daunting to sift through data dumps to find out what does what.

My first car (that ran, we're not counting the '74 Chevy C10 eternal project/Ship of Theseus) was an '85 Buick Somerset beater. When I broke the driver seat, I tossed the drivers seat and swapped the passenger seat over. Drove it that way through most of high school, down every kind of dirt road Oklahoma had to offer. My best friend and I eventually tossed some couch cushions down in the seat well so one of us could lay down while the other drove. I'd like to say one of us would be loving our girlfriend while the other one drove... but somehow that only seemed to be him loving his girlfriend while I drove, until I got pissed and forbade sex in my car. But mostly it was one of us laying down getting blazed like gently caress on Oklahoma ditch weed while the other one enjoyed the contact high and drove. Died of a cracked head, and apparently replacement heads were made of angel tears and all of them had the same casting flaw. I miss that car.
