College Slice
Denim finally arrived on my 925 last night (o2 uk).
This is the first time I've been able to use Cortana, which was announced for the uk in July 2014.

At this rate, Windows 10 - which will no doubt be a horrible crippled half-arsed release (if they don't declare my phone too old despite what they've said so far) - I should get some time late 2016.

No Denim yet on a Mexican (?) 1520 on T-Mob US running dev preview. Is that even a combination that will get an OTA update?

I'm not particularly bothered to get the latest, just feeling left out of the cool kids club.

Just a quick little Awful Beta update for this thread, in case anyone misses it. For anyone new who signed up, once the build gets processed, you should be able to download it via the link on my project page.

Nope, you have to push a new release with a list of users. I don't have to update the actual build though, just push a new release.

It should be up now though, It got approved a few hours ago. I'll check my list and make sure you're on it.

EDIT: The email you gave me is there, but it needs to be the same one you use for downloading apps on the Windows Store. So if that's different, then that's what you're getting permission errors I'm guessing.

I don't believe they said that, they said the low 512mb phones would not get all new Windows 10 features.

On the one hand, I'm a little sad that I can't check it out right now on any phone I own... but since they are not going to release any SDK until at least Build, I don't really care. I would love to play around with it, for sure, but if I can't actually make any apps in it... ehh, I can wait.

Deep breaths before the freakout starts. Other phone models coming. We just needed a small subset of devices to start in case something goes wrong and we need to vet the new partitioning code so the older 8.0 phones are good to go.

No we didn't say that. There are some things we just can't bring to older phones (think some of the new software that required hardware like sensor core). That's pretty much what was meant.

I know, but it's honestly better to say Microsoft was just loving with people and surprise, we can make it work on super low-end hardware. Take that Apple and Google.

Also probably worth noting is that this is very much still a beta version, not just a way to sidestep carrier releases like the dev preview program. You probably don't want to day-one install this on your primary device.

^^^ I think it's this Gabe

I asked Gabe about if it's possible to get a preview of API changes before Build, but I have a feeling that any response would be "Wait for Build". Which is okay (it's only a few months away). But I just really want to understand what kind of UI changes are going to happen (Ex. Are we getting a supported Hamburger menu), and screwing around with exposed API calls only goes so far.

It's not that big a deal though if that doesn't happen. I get that it's evolving, and making promises like that this early is probably not the best idea. But a hint would be nice :).

From the short preview videos I've seen it looks like 10 will be a somewhat mixed bag. There's definitely some great, elegant new features that make a lot of sense (everything in notifications, getting the settings menu a little bit more in order), but for every interesting new feature, there seems to be a head-scratching change that doesn't bring anything to the platform and just chips away further at the WP aesthetic. It looks like they aren't even using Segoe as the font of choice in the settings menu, and why is it all of a sudden a white background in the nested settings? Why did the dialer need to change, and go away (again) from the carousel? Why put in new "proper" backgrounds but eliminate the ones from 8.1? It just seems like another case where for every new and exciting feature, there will be another thing I will miss. Aside from the start screen itself, the GUI is starting to slowly mutate into Google, both in its general aesthetic and its lack of consistency.

Also, app loading still seems to be a little bit slow- I hope that'll get optimized and be a little better on whatever flagships are coming out. I'm getting so jealous of the buttery smoothness of iOS- something I never used to complain about with WP.

Ok e-mail (are we calling it Outlook?) looks fantastic. I'm not crazy about the calendar (bot for people who actually have busy lives it seems like a definite improvement), but it will be interesting to see what the Accompli acquisition brings to the table there. Also that Xbox Music interface looks really great. There's a bunch to look forward to here.

I'm just going to leave this here

quote:

This is the earliest publicly available preview we’ve ever done for Windows on phones. This preview is still very much under development and you’re going to see some rough edges. We’re sharing it with you so you can be with us at every step, and provide your feedback to help make this the best release ever—because it’s the one made for you. You will encounter bugs. You will see experiences that are clearly just not done yet, and UX that lacks polish at this point. DON’T WORRY! It will improve as we go and new features, stability and performance improvements, and more polished UX will come at each step.

You will likely feel like this first preview build for phones seems “less complete” or “earlier” than the PC. That’s true—it is. Although Windows 10 is built on shared code that runs on both PCs and phones, keep in mind that Windows 8.1 for PC was finished months earlier than Windows Phone 8.1, so the PC build has had more bake time. But we’re not worried about getting a great final product out or the progress we’re making. Much of our work until this point has been on platform development rather than the completeness of the UI, so a lot isn’t immediately visible – like the fact that we have a common OS core and app platform across PC and phones. But those ‘fundamentals’ represent a ton of work and are going to enable a lot of cool things to come, like apps that work seamlessly across devices, consistent manageability of devices, and the ability to run a whole new generation of Office Universal Apps on all of your Windows 10 devices.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm all for calling out stuff that's poo poo. I just don't want this tread to turn into what I see posted elsewhere with people thinking this is some near final build that will be shipped next month and they can't believe how loving unfinished it is. People expectations for what early pre beta builds are going to be like are loving completely insane at times.

Take that and times it by 1000x for phones. The sooner phone companies become just dumb data pipes that anyone can buy like we do with internet and where you can build your own phone or get phones direct from makers, the better things will be.

The Windows Phone developer dashboard was updated with additional analytics and reporting features. On the one hand, it's really fast now; I'm getting download counts seemingly as they happen, or close to it. This is a huge improvement over the usual two day delay in what the download count was.

But now they removed information from the exported report that I found really useful. Before I would get the app version, the Country/Region of the user, the language they use, the locale, age range, gender (if specified), OS version (Although not specific point build numbers, so 8.0 or 8.1, but not if they are on the preview program), Phone Manufacturer, and Mobile Operator.

Now I just get the Age range, gender, "Market" (which I'm guessing is Locale), Download count and OS version. This kinda sucks, because before I could get a better feel for who was downloading it. For example, with my PSN app, I had 300 people in the US market download it this week. But if you look at those users, around 50 of them had "China Mobile" as a carrier. Which most likely means they switched the region on their phone. Likewise, I had 10 people in the Japanese region download it, but only one of them was actually on a Japanese carrier (NTT Docomo), the rest were in China. It's useful to really know who is getting the app, in case I actually want to translate it into other languages beyond English and Japanese, but now I have much more generic data.

Oh well :(

I wonder if instead it'd be more useful to know who is *using* the app? and whether adding AppInsights would help there and also gather more information? It seems that Microsoft's pushing AppInsights pretty heavily.
