i enjoy weirding people out here by holding doors and calling them sir and miss and ma'am

but one of my bosses had to tell me not to do that in business correspondence since it was "way way too formal" to refer to someone i had never met as Mr. Firstname in an email

what? since when? does he even say this for the initial contacts before you know a person well?

hell, until i get to know someone i feel weird emailing them as mr or ms whatever because what if they have a doctorate i don't know about?

yea but you come from a culture of humblebragging through church luncheons / family christmas letters / elk clubs

canada has much more of the british "oh, yes, well it's not really much to talk about, he's an astronaut now" way of handling it

yep

sat me down in the conference room like i was in trouble or something

it's really jarring to start business correspondence with Hi $Firstname but that's what they want and apparently what everyone uses that i've seen

in civil honorifics are easy since there aren't really any docs so you just accrue a shitload of letters after your name and lord that over everyone else instead

canada, for one.

business communication is very informal in that particular fashion, unless it's a completely cold initial contact where you haven't been introduced by a colleague or other third party you just start with Firstname, or Hi Firstname, depending on how formal you want to be.

that's standard southern ettiquette

also the default conversational honorific for women is "miss" regardless of marital status, even in a business setting (correspondence still adheres to ms. tho) - mrs. is always impolite

and if you're addressing a mayor in business correspondence the proper honorific is "honorable $firstname $lastname" which my boss also laughed about when i asked if that was a thing here
