Clay Kirby reminds me of the time that Double Fine tried to make a game that they described as Monster Hunter with Ray Harryhausen graphics, in spite of the fact that jerky faux-claymation animation is the last thing you want in a game like Monster Hunter where timing attacks is everything.

Double Fine should just contract themselves to punch up the graphics and writing of other studios' games since that's the only thing they're good at and all their gameplay is either bad or shamelessly derivative anyways.

Psychonauts had a good recipe with enough of its own thing to feel unique. There's been adventure games, there's been 3d collectathon platformers, there hasn't been something that did both things well, plus beyond the basic presentation+gameplay there were a lot of unique places and ideas. it was rough around the edges as hell but it felt good fun for a first take and it felt like a sequel using what was learned from making it could have been even better.
