Ahahahah what the gently caress.

For what it's worth, I once interviewed for an office position at a shipping line where I was asked if it was common for cadet programs to be co-op.

It really didn't hit me until afterwards which is lucky I guess since I didn't end up losing my mind in the middle of it but I was definitely shell shocked.

It was a boiler H2O test question and she was reading off a sheet I guess because I didn't say the exact words she wanted. I started to correct her but she was already three questions ahead.

If you are talking MMP I think it's similar to engineers so around 90 k for 6 months would be safe to assume. It's harder to get out and get your foot in the union though. One of my friends started sailing with the MFU while getting his time in because the pay was better and he was able to pick up work easier.

I don't know what the oil price has done to wages or jobs but 3rds were making 180 k with their DPO quite recently.

Yea, I just got my 3/M ticket last month so I've been looking around for work. If that's the case, sailing as an AB for ~85k on a drillship doesn't sound so bad.

My friends brother started working for, I think, Chevron doing that. He was also looking at moving up pretty quickly but I'm not sure what it looks like currently.

Yea, I was told it could take more than a year to move up to an Assistant DPO spot, but if oil stays low I really don't mind. That's with previous DP experience as well.

Do you really think "eat your crew" is a really good slogan for people who've interacted with, seen and smelled merchant seamen on a regular basis?

I mean poo poo I've sailed with guys I could smell three decks away, through class A fire doors. I'd rather starve.

Those aren't big ships. Since you probably can't tell classes of ship, anything with two houses compared to a single house ship is huge. When you just see a EEE or whatever large ship all alone it's hard to get a sense of scale. Put one next to a G or K and it's enormous.

The labor dispute is another issue entirely.

Still a lot of containers on 40 ships just sitting there.

There's also a series of picture from the union showing how empty the container yards are.

Both the union and PMA have been playing gently caress gently caress games with each other. Right now the PMA is turning it up by saying there are too many containers sitting there and not moving out so they shut down most operations. The reason for this is PMA not ordering the work crews to get the cargo moved plus aging infrastructure. The PMA is probably going to win the publicity battle which is a shame.

ILWU has good wages and a no give back policy that they are extremely militant about. I support them 100% even knowing people see them as lazy and overpaid. From what my union has given up and the fact we will never get it back while companies are still turning in huge profits I'm rooting for the little guy. Better that everyone else makes more then everyone else gets their wages crushed more.

As far as ships are concerned, those ships are probably 6k-7k TEUs compared to the big stuff which is like 18k now with Maersk and their competitors ordering in the 20k range.

Edit: The writing is on the wall for the US flag fleet. McCain is dead set on killing the Jones Act.

You might have the wrong impression on this one point. I promise you that the engine room crew and day work engineers on the cruise ship I used to work on pulled multiple con rods. They did have a Wärtsilä specialist sail with us to assist with the overhaul, but we did at least 2 overhauls while I was there. It's not like they only have one propulsion engine on a cruise ship. We would typically run 2 out of 4 engines when island hopping in the Caribbean, leaving one engine as a standby when we had one in bits and pieces.

I agree that is a weird interview though.

Theres only one US flagged cruise ship and I haven't sailed on it so I don't feel bad about this. I guess with diesel electric you can do that but not with a slow speed. I'm going to look at it next week, I haven't worked in too long to think about it now.

Going to be with Big Blue again.

My goal for this year is to establish Nevada tax residency. I really need to stop paying state taxes.

Yeah the cruise lines (or at least the major ones) are pretty much all flag of convenience. #1 in tax avoidance and penny pinching. I can recommend reading Devils on the deep blue sea for an illuminating perspective on how far these fuckers go to min/max their business.
My favourite saying from the fitters I used to sail with was "P&O: Poor and Old Cruises. No budget." Goes a long way to explain the wages, and why the steam sanitize didn't work on any of the dish washing machines for over a year.
