The ability to create anything is amazing, like there was some decent talent even on day one, the problem was everything else. Once you reached tribal it was pretty bad. I ended up cheating the hell out of space a an hour or so in and not even that could save it.

The problem is that after the cell stage, all the customization is purely cosmetic. The cell stage is the most perfectly realized element of Spore: there's a sense of gameplay progression, and randomized unlock order of parts makes every cell game at least somewhat unique. Carnivore and herbivore are both legitimate choices, with very different playstyles, and omnivore manages to be its own unique playstyle, not just both herbivore and carnivore. Or you could just slap both herbivore and carnivore mouths on your cell, but then you've got less complexity to spend on other useful organs. Every single part you can add to your cell fundamentally changes how it plays, and most importantly, where you put the parts on your cell can make a world of difference. A carnivore can wear spikes on its front to attack, but a herbivore can also wear those same spikes on its rear for defense. The creature stage is where things start to get lovely. Herbivore becomes a lot more of a pain in the rear end to play, since fruit trees are the only food source and aren't spread regularly. Carnivore becomes optimal, since it plays well with the carnivorous strategy of extincting other species- you need to kill them to evolve, and you get food as a bonus for something you were already going to do. Omnivore is just having the option to do both. This stage is also the one with the least grounding in any kind of reality, with the two paths to sentience (befriending other species or wiping them the gently caress out) being complete nonsense in any kind of real world ecosystem. IMHO, the Creature stage is the very least fun stage to actually play. Critically, creature customization is now all about driving up stats. Placement and body anatomy have little to no impact on how the creature actually plays. The tribal stage is alright, I suppose, as a stripped-down-as-gently caress RTS. It's better balanced than the creature stage, in that killing or befriending the other tribes are both viable, and really you'll probably want to do at least a bit of both. Tribal outfits are now purely about increasing stats, placement matters not at all. It's mercifully short. The civilization stage is just the tribal stage but on a planetary scale. For some reason the formerly friendly "herbivore" path is reinterpreted as religious zealots who play exactly like the warmongers, but with hologram propaganda instead of bullets. If anything, they're objectively better, due to not damaging the cities they conquer. The civilization stage is quite basic, but actually manages a bit of depth. After the cell stage, I'd call it the second-best executed stage. The biggest failure is that building customization is now 100% cosmetic. Vehicle customization is just driving up stats. The space stage is where things just completely jump the rails and 15 year old me gets apopleptic when he realizes that the game's slow progression from controlling a single organism to controlling a planetary civlization has now reverted back to the creature stage dynamic.UFO customization is entirely cosmetic, and you only ever directly control a single spaceship, which needs to run all of the errands in the entire galaxy. I remember downloading a mod called "Space is Actually Fun" or something to that effect, which drastically increased mission payouts and reduced distress calls to once every 15 minutes, but sadly now I can't find it.

Later, the Galactic Adventures expansion added ground missions to the space stage which played like a slightly improved version of the Creature stage, but still was a pretty bland and boring RPG. The only good Spore related thing I can think of is Darkspore being kinda okay. It was a Diablo-like action RPG that was again, pretty generic and stripped down compared to other ARPGs but at least was more focused on being one stripped down game instead of being a stripped down space game with 4 intro minigames.

Gort posted:Yeah. There's a modifier called Ground Defense Efficiency that's tied to your doctrine. Germany starts at 100%, Russia starts at significantly less and catches up to slightly less by the end of the war as they go through their doctrine techs. It's basically a flat combat modifier, which means Germany gets to make a dent despite having otherwise inferior forces to what Russia has. It's also why Russian troops have higher organisation stats than German ones - they get demolished due to the GDE modifier, so they need the higher organisation stat or they'd run away too quickly. Well it is 1943 and one of the 1943 techs for Soviets Manpower doctrine entails this: ' I'd have about 220-220 divisions (excluding Bulgarian/Italian/Hungarian/Romanian) troops. I get the feeling that 1943 is the last good time to go for it, given the Soviets get even more bonuses in 1945.

The problem with Spore's space stage for me was how limited in scope it felt. What do you mean I only get a single ship to explore this entire galaxy and defeat the Grox? And I have to collect all the spice on my own every drat time? I never played Galactic Adventures though.

It appears that the livestream of HoI 4 has revealed a glaring flaw in the game design. Thankfully, the paradox forums are on the case: quote:I see that the image used for General Hausser has not been fixed. No gold (piping, eagle or other) on Waffen SS uniforms!!!!!! It should be white or a few things silver. White would be fine. The exceptions are arcane & highly rare and would not be used on uniforms like the ones you are using. This will be seen by those who know and will think it looks comical. Others who have watched movies like 'The Longest Day', 'Where Eagles Dare' & 'The Battle of the Bulge' will just think something is off about the uniforms. Disgraceful. Anyone else cancelling their preorder over this?

God, I really hope they do make Rome 2 because I just tried playing Rome again and man is it lovely. Like, I was playing the reign of ancients mod and I was sparta, I declared war on athens and successfully fought their army off, forcing them onto euboea. They kept crossing the strait to attack me and I won every battle in the war, but somehow I managed to win every battle while taking 2x more casualties than the Athenians? Suffice it to say I got my rear end handed to me because ~reasons~ that probably were good reasons, just not communicated well at all to the player. It's astonishing to see how big of a leap paradox has made in the quality of their games/retooling them from being grognardy, feedback-less diamonds-in-the-rough into what we have now.

The scale they were trying to represent could never be made to work in a videogame that wasn't stripped down to its most basic, so they either had to make every portion of the game except the cosmetic customization barebones, or make the customization stuff meaningless. They tried to make both great and ended up not being great in any of them. Interesting, and very impressive in a lot of ways, but I hardly want to go back and play it now. Of course, every section of the game could be made fun, and with mods, some of them were. To a point. It and various other games like it inspired an awesome game idea that I too, will never finish. Mostly since I've no game dev skills of almost any kind beyond saying "Naw, that'll never work"
