The idea is that the airflow from one blade interferes with that of the others, so everything else being the same, the fewer blades the better. There's the obvious problem of the unbalanced mass swinging around, but that was easily solved with a... counterbalance. But there was also the less obvious problem of the thrust from only one blade pulling forward and thereby bending the crankshaft diagonally in the crankcase and that was never solved. vessbot fucked around with this message at 00:42 on Feb 15, 2015 |

I've always wondered whether any of the people who design various flying cars (or the Popular Mechanics editors who've insisted they're "coming soon!" since the 50's) have ever stopped to think about the inevitable consequences of giving a nation of terrible drivers widespread access to something capable of flight.

Thanks delta for helping me find out about the 4 hour limit on skype calls. The agent picked up at 3 hours 59 minutes and 20 seconds. I'm calling about something they can actually help me with too because its an itinerary in asia, apparently everyone on the east coast needs to call up to be told "theres a blizzard, theres literally nothing that can be done because airplanes can't take off or land in blizzards" hobbesmaster fucked around with this message at 11:08 on Feb 15, 2015 |

Welp :drones: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2015/02/15/386464188/commercial-drone-rules-to-limit-their-speed-and-altitude quote:In short, the proposed rules that have been a decade in the making would limit drones weighing no more than 55 lbs to flying no more than 100 mph at an altitude no higher than 500 feet. The FAA would ban their use at night and near airports. And, they could only be operated by someone with a certification who keeps the vehicle "in line of sight" at all times. I wonder how much the line of sight idea will bring operators up in arms. Now if they would get to Eliminating the 3rd Class medical issue that would be grand. Edit: whoops forgot this little tidbit. quote:The FAA also will require anyone using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for commercial purposes to obtain a special pilot certification to operate them.

Only if they have hellfires Serious question though, is it really a problem? You hear about idiots flying near airports every now and then, but in the big picture is there even a problem that needs to be solved? I see the potential for unintended consequences being pretty large. Hopefully if something like this does go ahead it gets tightened up significantly in the review/consultation phase.

If the history of aviation proves anything, it's that you should wait until something happens before you try to do anything about potential issues.

I see now, the prop teeters forward and back on the hub... but the teetering axis itself is offset so that the blade twist changes as it does so. Like a delta 3 hinge on helicopters, and completely not visible on a still pic because it's built into the hub.

It's not enforceable. Is the FAA going to run down someone flying their drone 501 feet above the Arizona desert getting sick panoramas? Are they going to be trolling Youtube for evidence of violations that already happened and nobody called in to report a horrible limb serving quadcopter accident? Sounds like a great use of federal resources while manned aircraft with actual mass are out violating rules too. Oh boy I see a drone flying over the airport let's escort down with an F-16 and arrest the pilo... oh wait. I can't buy a 172 hanging behind the checkout at Barnes and Noble. I can with a drone.
