Ugh the entire Lexus range was also sold as Toyotas
IS - Altezza
ES - Windom
GS - Aristo
SC - Soarer
LS - Celsior

There were of course spec differences (like the Altezza could come with a 3SGE and there was a 2.5 Windom) but they were the same basic cars.
Most of the ones imported to Australia were soarers and celsiors. That's all I knew, sorry, not a big fan of toyota/lexus.
I had to look up windom and aristo, never heard of them. Unless I've seen them around I didn't know they exist.
May be something to due with the unlimited import thing you have in NZ, and the restricted import thing we had in Australia.

Something like that. To be eligible for import it had to be a car not locally available. As Lexus was here and didn't sell coupes, I think they were the easiest/most commonly imported cars (also would be the type of car most people would want to import too imo). But then again a lot of celsiors got through too so I don't know - import laws have changes a couple of times.

Kind of explains the windom then. Some were locally available in Australia, (they even made camrys in Australia), so protected against personal/private import I guess. Same for the IS and some LS models, that was what lexus in Australia were selling.
If toyota or lexus were selling them here, you couldn't import it, but neither were selling the soarer or sc300/sc400 so a lot of people and dealers privately imported them.

I did just buy one, although mine is a 1993 and thus a fourth gen, this one is a fifth gen. They share a lot of parts though and mechanically they can be very much identical. In any case I don't typically chase ads where they can't even be hosed to put together some lovely cellphone pics of the actual car.

Geez, Laguna Blue sure commands a premium - this one if a few mile away from me, and it's a low mileage one owner. If I could ever talk myself into buying an S2K, this would be the one. Too bad that in the last 3 months I've spent 1500 on tires, 1500 on health insurance deductibles, 1000 on Miata work, 5000 on additional taxes, 4000 on furniture and 4000 on course work. And too bad the price is still insane. I can't believe it's been less than a year since I turned down a Suzuka AP2 with 45k(?) miles for $17k, although it needed 2k in work.

What you said makes sense, the ES250/300/350 looked very much their Camry siblings. Especially the ES250; Lexus panicked when they only had one model at launch and very hastily (like, the design team spent 15 minutes working over a 2nd gen Camry) and that was the result.

I am glad I am not the only one who does not get the s2000 prices. Everytime that I think about picking one up, I just look at cl and its just not worth it. This would be the exact one that I would want, but its been listed at this prices for months.

God drat, I don't even want to think about how much that engine build cost, but I want one in an aw11. People say you can't make power with a 4age, this proves that you can. As long as you want to spend $10k+ on the build.

Haha, there is no way that motor is even remotely civil to drive around on the street. Yeah, you can make power. That's incredibly peaky and an animal to drive. That's one hell of a nice setup though, I'd drive the poo poo out of it.

I'm guessing it's the rough as hell idle from the ginormous cam profile Formula Atlantic engines use combined with solid engine mounts causing the whole car to rattle. Depending on which cams you want, an FA engine at minimum runs 304 degree duration cams and can run as high as 320 degree cams, so there's no way to not have the world's lumpiest idle with that.
