I wonder why they can't send them electronically. I wonder if there's a law or best practice I'm breaking by emailing PDFs around to contractors/freelancers.

They didn't seem to mind.

Are a lot of the people you work for/with still mailing you physical 1099s in 2015?

I received like twelve 1099s this year, and every last one except for my share of a joint project with Moana was a physical form. Thanks for being part of the modern era, Moana. My W2 was paper, also.

I got both my W2 and 1098-T online. It was awesome.

I've already filed and gotten my refund. :)

But not as much as I like getting to pay my grad school tuition in cash this fall.

Email isn't encrypted by default so I wouldn't be surprised if it's some sort of privacy violation to send tax forms via it. Might also be that companies don't want any potential liability.

I was going through my credit card bills and I still seem to have halved my expenditure on food and entertainment. My main credit card had two larger expenditures one on a game and the other on a really good pillow. I still buy lunch every day and ordered pizza once in the past month. It feels odd to live the same lifestyle but spend half as much. This year should be good for accumulating money to invest.

Tootin the Doom Flute has led the Kingdom of Ankist into a new age of illumination. Every morning, people wake up and open palm slam a woodwind instrument into their mouth. It is the Doom Flute and right then and there they start playing the notes. They play every note, and they play every note hard

Fingers crossed the state legislature reinstates our Cost of Living Allowances this year… (WA State). A 3% increase this year and a 1.8% increase the following year is what has been proposed.

They suspended them in 2008, and we even took a 3% pay cut for one or two years. My salary would be 12% higher right now if they weren't such jerks.

I'm going to be driving a significant amount of miles over 2 weeks in April. I have a car, but it's older, and I think I'd rather rent a car for those 2 weeks to save the wear and tear.

The problem is, I've never rented a car. What's the best way to get a decent rate for 2 weeks? I feel like, with most travel purchases, there's always a way to get a deal, and I have plenty of time before I need this.

That is pretty solid. I used hotwire last time in Detroit over Thanksgiving and was able to get an econobox for $18 a day (about $23 after all the tax stuff). Landing at 1 AM the night before Thanksgiving meant I ended up with a midsize for the same price. I completely planned it that way too because they always run out of the cheap cars at the holidays and boom, upgrade.

Also to Grumpwagon make sure you check the mileage allowance. Usually it is unlimited miles but they do have a cap on it at some point and charge you per mile after you blow through it. I don't know what significant is to you but just be sure to check. The really cheap companies also will charge you $10 a day to add another driver to the rental as well (even a spouse...). Places like hertz and enterprise cost more but they usually let you added people for free.

I found this image on the Internet, perhaps you've heard of it? It's been around for a while I hear.

Ate out on Friday. Went back to a barbecue place I hadn't been in years, and after $15 spent on a 2-meat plate and a fountain soda (shut up) where the brisket was dry, I definitely won't be going back any time soon even if the sausage was really good. To make up for it, I went to a wedding later that night and ate and drank a ton on someone else's dime -- and then when some of us old college classmates went downtown right after, both of my drinks were bought by others in the group who drink way more than I do. I did totally bust my normal calorie budget, though :btroll:

Also, I've been frustrated that I couldn't finish my taxes since E*Trade has lagged behind Vanguard in getting me a set of 1099 docs. Friday morning E*Trade emails me and says they're ready, yay! Before the wedding, I downloaded them and tried to see if H&R Block could import them online. NOPE! It says to wait until Sat/Sun at midnight. So I tried again this morning and H&R Block said the E*Trade server returned an error about last year's numbers:

E*Trade downloaded fine into TurboTax for me today, so it might be H&R Block's issue.

People are warning against turbo tax because they made many buy a tier higher than they had in the past. They're now giving people $25 if they were forced to upgrade, so it's a wash.

If you're on Medicaid with just student loans as a complication, you'll probably be fine with the basic turbo tax.

On H&R block, consider that a big part of their business model is giving people their refund early at userous rates.

That sounds...fine? As long as it was budgeted for - personal discretionary vs raiding other crap. Seeing a friend for lunch is sometimes the only time the two of you can schedule it. Especially if it's an out of town friend.

I find myself eating ramen for lunch more often than I'd like, simply because it's stupid easy, hot, dirt cheap, and can be prepped with 30 seconds of effort. Keep a bag of mixed veggies in your work's freezer, and you can add some substance to it.

I have a question for the BFC crew.

Work is slowing down very badly, and they have started cutting hours. I will be down to 40 hours per week from 55's with overtime. This puts me in a bit of a pickle because I'll be $103.44 short every month if I only work 40's. I have a loan with a minimum payment of $127.56/month. Balance remaining is $2615.03 @11.99% (my foundation needed to be piered and the bank of Mom & Dad was closed. Do never buy)

I have a $1000 emergency fund earning.... 2 cents of interest a Month and a savings account with a balance of $323.05 earning...1 cent a month. I also have an income tax refund coming for $1382.81, which I was intending to use to pay down debt anyway...

Bringing the total potential of money I can pay off to: $2705.86.

So, wise BFC goons, should I do the needful and drain all my savings to wipe out this debt? It'd make it so I can actually live below my means on 40 hours (in the oil industry, who knows how long this is gonna last). I'd keep whatever is left to seed the e-fund again.

This is after paring down all expenses and only factoring in $40 for gasoline a month (live 5 miles from work, will bike if I can) and my wife picking up groceries.

Can you look at your budget and see what you can cut out? Sounds like you're living a bit too close to the wire. I'm also not clear how 60hr/mo only equates to $103/mo. I'm guessing it's a lot more money than that, but you've been blowing it vs saving/paying on debts? See where you can tighten your budget up.

I would move both of your savings to Ally Bank or GE or something that gets closer to 1%, but that surely won't fix your problem at all.

I would keep the $1k in emergency fund, and use the remaining $1.7k in savings to pay off the loan monthly, and hopefully hours go up soon. Don't deplete your efund, it's very very small as it is.

In machining, all the money gets made in overtime, at time and a half. The common wisdom is to live on what you make @ 40 hours per week and bank the rest. Not all of us followed that wisdom and only learn the hard way during downturns. When I'm at 55-60 hour weeks, my take home is around $1800 every two weeks. At 40 hour weeks, it's $1183 every two weeks. I knew the downturn in hours was coming and have been socking money away and getting out of subscriptions and services as fast as I could, but I wasn't fast enough.

I have to say that ynab was a big help in getting things in better shape. I just didn't start long enough ago. So, keep the efund and pay the monthly loan dues off the taxes/savings?

This would result in you paying a little more in interest every month on the outstanding loan, but it's probably the right call. This way you have more time to ride it out to hopefully find more ways to save some money or start earning more in a side gig.
