Going to EAS before the new year, any advice? Still have to attend TRS but I want to hear an honest answer.

Make sure you go to medical and they make records of everything you think is wrong with you. The VA will deny you if there is no paper on issues from when you were in. If you're interested, see if they're offering any free money to go into the reserves for a year or two. Right after I got out, I know they were offering cash money for corporals to extend for a year. Idk if they're still doing that or if they'd do it for an active to reserve nco/snco, but it can't hurt to check if you're interested.

I was thinking about the Reserves, do you need stay clean? Also is there a chance to return active if fuckshit happens?

Shif posted:I was thinking about the Reserves, do you need stay clean? Also is there a chance to return active if fuckshit happens? Staying clean really depends. You'll have to see when you get there. I got piss tested like once my first four years in. When I got back from deployment though, we had an admin fgt who could piss test so we started doing it all the drat time. Like, they didn't do the whole company, but they would do a random selection seemingly every drill. As far as returning to active if poo poo goes craycray, you might get activated, but activations are usually like 400 days or some poo poo. It won't be permanent active duty. You'd actually be more likely to get called up to full time active duty from the IRR if that happened.

Yeah last year I went TAD for reasons and was talking with a couple activated marines. They really didn't have to do poo poo but drill and they get loving paid. Reserve + active duty + some weird activation pay, ended up being about 2 and a half months active pay in 2 weeks. The hell?

Shif posted:Going to EAS before the new year, any advice? Still have to attend TRS but I want to hear an honest answer. Are you thinking about staying in? We are moving to peacetime Marine Corps and are in the middle of a drawdown so first term marines have to compete for boat spaces just to be afforded the privilege of trying to stay in. If you did four years you are probably a Corporal or maybe a Sergeant if you are in a fast promoting MOS. If you stay in, your career will probably look something like this: Years 4-8: Get poo poo all over by lovely SNCOs who got promoted during the surge when anyone with a pulse who wanted to stay in could. Hope you pin on a rocker so you don't have to deal with service limitations. Years 8-12: Welcome to the SNCO world. As a SSgt you can look forward to being put on every poo poo duty that exists and given every lovely extra duty your Gunnies don't want to gently caress with. Things might start to suck a little less here but you are really just a bitch to everyone senior to you. Years 12-16: You might actually pick up Gunny here. Gunny is a good rank because you finally have SSgts to take all that dumb extra duties that Lts and boot SNCOs get stuck with. You can kind of stop giving a gently caress because retiring as an E-7 is pretty respectable and people actually listen when you say poo poo like "In my experience". Years 16-20: If you are lucky and in an MOS that actually promotes to MSgt, you might see E-8 (Unless you try to go the 1stSgt route of which I know nothing about other than they do NJPs and hold formations and no one likes them because they only do admin poo poo no one cares about). If you make it this far, you have arrived because no one fucks with MSgts. You can stop doing PFTs and make the S-3 run your old ones because you are never going to see Master Guns. Fitreps don't matter because you are cleared up until retirement. You are probably on your 2nd or 3rd marriage by now and alimony and child support eat up a fair bit of your checks. You can also look forward to splitting your retirement with your first wife who stuck around just long enough to cash in on that poo poo before she split town with another Marine she was loving around with while you were deployed. So in 20 years, you might have 8 that aren't miserable. I stuck around but I was an idiot and just had a kid and was afraid of the real world. Once I got in so deep, it didn't make sense to stop without a retirement check.

loving hell that is absurdly accurate. I do happen to be a 3-year Sergeant but I've worked my rear end off to get here because I'm simply fuckoff competitive. Although a 20-year retirement check is appealing, I'm not sure I want to put up the potential bullshit anymore; gently caress duty/idiot marines. I guess I could look into the reserves, if not I'll just pop that fat Post 9/11 Bill and get learned. Also wasn't there some looming poo poo in Congress about removing the 20-year benefits? If that falls through what happens?

Hard charging reservists usually have a boner for guys who come from active duty. You'll instantly have respect, people will assume you're a good Marine, and unless you prove otherwise, your equals and higher ups will probably give you a high level billet in your platoon and your skates will be beyond reproach.

It'd be political suicide to even mention changing retirement benefits for those already in. You might be able to squeeze a new plan through that changed benefits for future generations. When I first came in all the SNCOs had different retirement plans than we do now. It used to be that you retired at whatever the highest rank you held was. It changed to the average of your highest three paid years. This saved some money because a lot of guys would pin on E-8 and only do the mandatory 2 extra years.
