For the first time in their lives, my cousins are coming from overseas to visit me in America. I'm having them decide where they want to go but suggested I Vegas as a stop for 5 nights. These are guys from about 22 to 29, I'm 33. We'll be a group of 4. I'm trying to decide on a hotel and don't mind splurging on the trip in general because this is a rare event. We're going to go to other hotels for shows, clubs, the canyon, and explore Vegas or nearby.

The two I'm trying to decide between are the Wynn, seems to get the top reviews, or Cosmopolitan and am leaning the Cosmopolitan because it supposedly has a reputation for catering to the younger crowd and it does look beautiful. I thought about the Palazzo as an alternate.

Anyone stayed at both the Wynn or Cosmo and had thoughts on which they preferred?

Cosmo is definitely a better choice for that age group, with the added advantage over Wynn of having a better location mid strip.

Also, another positive date point on the Plaza. I received a handwritten note from one of their casino hosts thanking me for playing and asking me to "give [him] a call for all your Las Vegas visits".

Benny Binion was on to something when he started comping everyone, even the low rollers. I'll definitely give the Plaza a thought for a stay next time.

I've been looking into heading to Vegas this spring, and I've been studying poker strategy some. Are there any particularly good places and/or times to milk compulsive gamblers at the poker table?

Tables are weakest on the weekend on the strip. Even at the 1/2 tables however you'll see a lot of locals who just play poker all the time when they're done with work and while they generally play in a way that you can exploit (and are therefore technically not good) they're not clueless. Certain rooms have more sharks than others, but those rooms also usually have lower rake and are better rooms as far as the layout and chairs and comps and whatnot goes, so it's probably mostly a wash.
The smaller rooms have a higher proprtion of bad passive tourist players, the larger rooms have a higher proportion of maniac Asians and Idiots from Northern Europe.

Once in a while you get a guy who lost some money at the tables and takes his last 150 or whatever and gives it a go on poker. If you're lucky you'll be in a playable spot at the same time they are. If you're really lucky or know how to isolate and play post someone else who knows what they're doing maybe won't join the party. Overall though you have to be able to keep up vs. people who aren't clueless while you wait for those spots. If a place has good games going with lots of bad players you see a few locals send a few texts and lo and behold in walks a few more of them.

Some of the 2/5 tables have a surprisingly good stable of regular players sitting at them but at least at that level the rake isn't such a huge burden (still a pain though).
If they have their headphones in, a patient look on their face and a lot of money in front of them you're going to have to earn your pots if they're involved whether you crush the flop or not.

Oh and hey JaySB, I'm in town. I'm just playing poker for now but PM me if you get tired of being an internet thrillionaire.

I ate at a brunch buffet out near the place I'm renting at the end of last night and the waiter brought me at least five free mimosas in the space of maybe forty minutes and topped up my glass twice besides. Dude wasn't loving around.

VDara is a great deal because it's essentially Aria location and Aria quality but you don't have to "pay" for all the bars, restaurants, and casino.

However if you want to use all the Aria stuff (and you should) you just walk across this cul-de-sac thing and in about a minute you're in the Aria casino.

The only things I 'missed' was the little touchscreen thing by the bed to control the blinds and lights but it's not a big deal.

Vdara is also great because of you can go from there to Bellagio in like 15 seconds.

If you get 4 rooms...You could do 2 rooms with 2 beds. Personally, I'd get the Wraparound Terrace suite with a connecting room with 2 double beds.

Yeah I was looking at 2 rooms with 2 beds. Will check out the Wraparound.

Question. Is there a suite that can house 8 people? If so what'd be the cost of something like that per night Monday through Friday night, leave Saturday? Out of Cosmopolitan, Aria, Vdara, Wynn/Encore, Palazzo/Venetian. Just curious as to a ballpark for a hotel like those. Skyloft?

8 people...Jesus. Maybe a 3 bedroom penthouse at Cosmo would be the best bet (cheapest) ~$1500 a night on average. Maybe a tad more depending in the dates.

It's not that bad of a room, especially for the price. Are you talking the 2 bedroom West Tower? The star rooms at Cosmo are the Bungalows and the Wraparound Terrace Suite IMO

Unnggghhhh.... You guys got me looking at what upgrades might be there for the trip I have the first weekend of April. We're currently 4 dudes booked into 2 City Rooms. We were going to be our usual polite, charming selves and ask with a generous tip if any upgrades were available and see if we could at least get one of the rooms with a balcony. Any insights or tips, Jay/thread?

e: Last time we were there, we had a Terrace One Bed with a rollaway between 3 of us, and the balcony made the whole thing worth it.

My Vegas History - I went for the first time last October to play in a poker tourney at the Wynn and do touristy things. Coincidentally I also stayed at the Wynn, as I don't care too much about bars / clubs as much as I do a nice casino & poker room and good restaurants and it seemed like a really quality, really classy - but pricey - choice for what it was.

I want to go again.

Two questions -

1. Given that I'm not all about the nightlife should I stick with the Wynn or are there comparable high end establishments that I can save a little on? Ideally I'd like something with a better sports betting room as the Wynn's almost felt like an after thought. Location on the strip isn't a huge deal - I don't care about central or either end.

2. Is it too early to start thinking about booking for another October trip? I'm going for a week long event - and might stay over again for the fall classic - but I've heard there are usually better deals found 2 weeks to a month beforehand. Is 8 months in advance just going to get me just normal-ish deals?

TheReverend

Sign up to be a WynnInsider (should have just been called Wynnsider) They'll send you special deals every now and then.

At 8 months it's not a bad time to just be looking. I booked my hotel for my October trip in January because Aria sent me a "deal I couldn't refuse".

As for non-Wynn places to check out maybe Aria? They tend to price less than Wynn and I thought it was a great place!

Some people like the Palazzo's book, which was originally a nightclub that I once worked for, a fair bit. Instead of it feeling like an afterthought as a book it feels like someone went totally overboard. You would walk to the Venetian a short bit for poker which is a big well run room with low rake (4 max no drop) and a few extra sharks -- the two casinos are connected through a short underground tunnel with a big year of the goat display in it. Both of these places are a little more utilitarian than the Wynn (but not some bog grade operation like the Flamingo or whatever) and I have no idea about the price points but consider it as an option -- maybe it's fair to say they're the low end of upscale, I don't know.

Venetian hosts a lot of deep stack tourneys.

Good call with the WynnInsider stuff. I did sign up when there last year, but no good deals for October yet. I've signed up with Aria's "guestbook" so we'll see what comes along

Palazzo looks really interesting but they're currently +20% over Wynn in terms of price if I booked now, which blew my mind.

As far as price points, I wanted to stay in a "nice" place without much thought to price my first time, and after minimal research went with the Wynn. This time I just wanted to vary it up but with similar quality at around the same price. I'm not opposed to staying there again however.

At this point I'm thinking of just doing a weekend trip out well before October to give Aria a try before deciding. It's come well recommended by others and the urge to hit up lotus of siam again is strong.

Thanks!

Just got back from a bachelor party trip to vegas.

1) The Vdara is an amazing place to stay. Great rooms, quiet, and not as run down as some of my friends' hotels in other places.

2) Go to Roos 'N More. People were making noise about going to the gun range until I realized it'd be $250 to have any fun there. We ended up taking a stretch limo out to Roos and people freaked the gently caress out at getting to interact with those things. All the single guys have new Tinder profiles with wild animals and the facebook album blew up. Hell of at time and $250 for 2 hours is a great deal.
