Gloomy or apocalyptic atmosphere, eclectic instrumentation, dudes with deep, foreboding voices. Any recommendations in that regard? I know 16 Horsepower is probably a must.

For a more "traditional" rap sound, I'd check early Ice Cube albums (especially Amerikkka's Most Wanted). El-P's production has alot of the same type of boom-bap aggressive sound as the Bomb Squad, and Killer Mike is pretty good as a politically-influenced street dude. You could also check Company Flow which is where El-P got started, but the rapping has a lot more superscientifical rappity-rap talking poo poo to talk poo poo vibe than the more grounded stuff in RTJ.

I'd also recommend checking solo stuff by either artist. Anything Killer Mike did previous to working with El-P will have a way different sound in production though (anything before RAP Music), so if that's a big selling point may wanna avoid it. Also El-P's solo production and the stuff he's done prior is largely much more...harsh and he's gotten a lot better at rapping imo so that's also something to consider. Along with that, Cannibal Ox's Cold Vein has El-P production and is one of the best rap albums of the 2000's imo.

And for some dudes who would be similar that aren't directly in the group, Rob Sonic and Hail Mary Mallon are similar if you favor the production. If you like the raps (especially Killer Mike's) and want similar content Goodie Mob, Scarface, Alley Boy and Trouble come to mind (although the latter two often get a lot more street than Killer Mike. I'd also say Vince Staples eps would fit the vein lyrically.

Alright, so this quickly became one ofmy favorite russian bands. I've read disparaging remarks about them basically ripping off some foreign bands that were dime a dozen at the time. Huh? Can't hear the VU in them. I mean, i'm aware of the NY "proto-punk" bands and that whole scene, but I don't hear too many similarities here, sound-wise. Or do you mean the same bands but in the 90s? Never got to checking that out. Also from what I gather the flagman tam tam bands were pretty diverse in their sound and influences. Good lookin out though.
Edit Now that you mention it, I guess I can see where the VU comparsion comes from, what with the use of violin and all that.
Edit 2: I guess one can say Chimera sounds somewhat like Melvins or NoMeansNo and the post- hardcore style as a whole, but those bands still lack that special something I can't put a finger on. I guess I just like the Chimera frontman very much.

Oh ok, I get ya. That was my first guess, but for the off chance that the sound Chimera had (which I found pretty unique and was startled by) wasn't an abberation, I had to ask . poo poo, maybe there was like, a whole scene of such bands and I wouldn't know because I thought "Oh yeah? gently caress you, internet guy, Chimera rulez! This might be a bit tough, and I apologize for any vagueness.

What I'm looking for are records that are a pretty weird but good and musically accessible. A recent example of something I'd put in this category is the record Jello Biafra made with Mojo Nixon, Prairie Home Invasion. Tom Waits would be another example of weird but ultimately really enjoyable for me. As would Roky Erickson. I'd also put, funnily enough, considering it was just recommended, Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 in that category.

Not electric or southern, but based on your last request and smoky whisky bar sound, you probably need Closing Time by Tom Waits, which is amazing.

I'm a jazz novice but these three always seemed like the most obvious ones:

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

None of those are very similar to what you hear in Whiplash, though. For great jazz drumming I would look into anything that featured Art Blakey, Max Roach or Tony Williams behind the kit. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' "Free For All" is my favorite jazz album I've heard, followed by "Blues and Roots" by Mingus and "Blue Train" by Coltrane.

You also might want to look into fusion, which I enjoyed long before I got into straight-up jazz. Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" gives me the vibe of the songs in that movie.

This may or may not be correct.

I saw Ornette Coleman live a few years ago and he was fantastic. A bit weirder than some jazz perhaps, but hard not to recommend.
