Terminology debates are ultimately a distraction from the problems in society that cause people to feel the need to find things to complain about in the first place. People feel anxiety about their existence in our world and the easiest target is people who don't fit in or just feel wrong, like the tumblers or the transes or 'shitlords' who don't see the world their way, and the argument about slurs is only ever perceived as a 'well now they're even trying to take over my language!' sort of thing. The point of communication is to both learn to do so effectively, and learn to interface with other people's ways of saying things even if they never completely line up with your own. Plenty of slurs are only hurtful because of the horrific power structures of which they act as a reminder - if those relations are removed, they become devoid of this meaning. We are all allies in this greater struggle against our own human weaknesses and the power structures we've built for ourselves. Also kill the rich.

The writer has a problem with a 'certain group of people'. Not trans people, although their association with liberals makes them an easy subtarget, but the people who he feels are trying to 'tell him what to do'. Being judged for how he acts or what he writes on someone else's terms - the idea that people will read what he writes - is scary, and the blame must be on those who fail to fall in line and think his way. tldr Defending one's ideas or choice of words is far too hard if you're the sort of idiot who writes for the escapist, it's easier to fantasize about the 'PC Police'. The guy isn't an rear end in a top hat (well they are) so much as very very stupid in the very specific way that makes it difficult for them to engage with other people - but it's the other people's fault! All of them! They want to tell me how to talk!

WickedHate posted:If he doesn't think("isn't aware") he's doing or saying anything wrong then it's the exact same thing. ...N-no. No it isn't. There was a time when I might have used the word 'tranny' to refer to a transgender person - I had no particular ill-will towards trans-people, but I had never actually engaged with one either so I had no idea that words like that would come off as hurtful. My horizons eventually broadened, I became more aware of what is or isn't considered polite, and I began making an effort not to use certain words - because I generally have some concern for the feelings of people I engage with. If someone understands that a word is offensive to a given person and finds it too bothersome to remove that word from their vocabulary, that goes beyond ignorance and goes into active disregard for the person in particular. I don't know why you're so intent on rendering the two as morally equivalent.

I do go for the way one deals with nonsense. If someone shits on transfolk or black folk or muslims to some point, gets on where they're being lovely and makes an honest attempt to fix their wrongs, I won't be so harsh than someone who let's say, start embracing endorsements from V-Dare or starts looking at matters that resulted in big piles of skulls and going "pfffft, tumblr poo poo."

Also, I have only actually met one trans-person in my entire life, a person who only came out years after I'd last seen her in person and I have only known via Facebook for years - and I'm the sort of guy who usually makes some effort to broaden my cultural horizons. I really don't think that, especially for a guy who does a lot of work at or near home with the same set of people, having a meaningful engagement with a person he knows to be Trans is half as easy to come by as you seem to think. I had a transgender science teacher in grade 11. She was pretty cool. I also had a trans-person in one of my university classes and my first thought was: "Cool! I never met many trans people before!" My mom used to work with someone who eventually came out as a transman, but my mom didn't work there anymore when he came out. I also used to make fun of people's weird pronouns until I realized how transphobic that was. So I guess people Doug's age have more difficulty than I did. And I was a pretty dumb teenager.

We're still at the point where it is completely possible to be unaware of trans issues in near totality with absolutely no effort taken to do so.

Lol, this loving thread sometimes. Speaking for myself as a tranny, Rich from whatever thing that you talk about that I don't watch = sounds like a mistake, no real issue. Dudetwat from The Escapist that I don't read = hateful poo poo who should have several seats. Can't wait for you to get to Gamezville in particular, because Gamezville was a special kind of trainwreck.
