I have a dream. I have a dream where the Republicans of this nation get their way, and their children die directly because of their poor political choices. And lacking any other scapegoat, they have to blame themselves and their policies, and if they grow a conscience, they'll be forced to repent. And then there's a chance we'll get a nation where people believe it's important to contribute to the common good, that public service is a noble profession, and that we, the people create the wealth of this nation and keep it running, not just a handful of oligarchs.

This is it. This is where the wheels come off. At this exact moment, the people in your scenario will not suddenly have a redemption moment and claim they were wrong. They will push all the harder. They will insist there was a liberal, somewhere, who bitched it up. There will be witch hunts.

I am not saying "lol Repubs are dumb." I am saying that there are reports about how strongly cognitive dissonance kicks in when people are confronted with these kinds of harsh truths. Here's one. Another. A third.

People by and large do not change their beliefs when in the face of devastating carnage. They cling all the harder, even if those believes caused that carnage. Your approach will not work.

City council socialists, you say? Surely this will mean much to the uninsured of Mississippi and translate to gains for those living in the poorest states.

This is, I believe, entirely accurate, and the core problem with accelerationist philosophy. There _is_ no point of turnaround for many people. The answer to something being broken is to hit it again, harder, then yell at it. If you recall the Bush era's disagreement with reality-based thinking, you can see it at the highest levels. At the lowest levels, you see it in the South's inability to accept their ancestors fought for the wrong side of the war, and their insistence that slaves were happy being slaves.

Also, the Northwest Side of Chicago is far from a liberal hotbed. It's working-class, religious, and socially conservative. It isn't Mississippi, but it's closer to that than Berkeley or Seattle.

And this is still a sign of any sort of hope for people living in the poorest corners of America that also have state governments that hate them...because? That's where the true screwjob is occurring.

I like how people act like a socialist city council member in Seattle signals some national sea change. Unions are dead and more than likely will be operating in what is functionally going to be a national RTW environment. I read this more as the final hurrah for labor in its last redoubts as it defends itself against its final picking apart. Labor cannot go on offense and protect the long-time unprotected at this point because it is lower in numbers, held down defending itself in northern cities, and run by people who think there's a way to just restore the way things were before 1979 through enough magic and stubbornness.

National RTW is coming, and no one has any clue what to do aside from feebly protesting against the inevitable and acting like you can just restore the New Deal in the face of a force dead set on exterminating it that also happens to run a large majority of states at every functional level as well as SCOTUS.

But hey, as long as cool white kids that fancy themselves revolutionaries (mostly online) in the worlds most affluent cities can brag about having socialists around.

Did you read my sentence about the Northwest Side of Chicago? Meegan is running in a low-income, ethnically diverse, socially conservative district, he's a union member, and he's literally going up against hedge funds. There are about as many cool white online revolutionaries in the 33rd Ward as there are confederate flags in The Castro.

And the outcome will be that there might be a socialist in Chicago. As goes majority minority communities in Chicago, so goes...something, I guess. Surely this will revive the labor movement and stop national RTW.

There's a total disconnect between major northern cities and everywhere else. I remember when TN banned CBAs with teachers and an NJ friend was like, "yeah, I know what it's like. We're gonna have to pay like $50 more a month for healthcare. FUCKIN UNION BUSTERS!" You can't even comprehend how much more hosed everyone else is.

Hell, didn't your governor pretty much just unilaterally make the same decision for public sector union dues that SCOTUS is going to make?

Yeah, as best as I can tell the argument there is "this incremental improvement in one area has little chance of directly helping another area, soon." I am not sure what the proposed remedy is, or if it's just meant to discourage bothering with the first place.
