Pro-tip: don't use autopay for cable bills, especially as you go to to cancel. Let them have to go after you for the last bill, not let them take whatever and then have to go after them for a refund.

I've actually disabled autopay for my phone bill because it forces me to take a look at it every month.

And sometimes AT&T lets me modify it to get a better deal without extending my contract. I really need to save my pennies so I can buy an unlocked phone with quadband support, and go that route with the phone companies. Doing that with my current phone, an iPhone 4 with 8gb, would be kinda silly. I also don't know why I need internet access for this thing since it's entirely possible to buy dedicated devices for certain functions (GPS, radar detector, eBook, games, and obviously a PC), and that will save me money in the long run. My bank is also willing to send me txt alerts when something crazy is happening with my accounts, so...

edit: And things like LSD are a lot cheaper than an actual vacation.

It is incredible how much money DirecTV spends on marketing, beyond incredible actually. If they'd shave off 1% of their marketing costs I swear they could probably lower peoples' bills by at least 30% and not even feel it. I cut our cable eons ago and haven't had them for a long time, yet probably 2-5 times a week I get a TON of DirecTV crap in the mail. They are drat devious too. Half the stuff is printed with a very convincing script font with some random "Christopher Thomas" return label that looks like he got it from March of Dimes or something, even the internal letter looks like a wedding/graduation invitation. It's the same thing over and over, "we'll buy out your current contract if you come back!" with more and more glitter each time.

I can respect them wanting my business back (not gonna happen) but DANG after the first literal 100 things they sent me with 0 response you'd think they would at least back off of them for a bit.

The Internet Whore made me buy this account
In the last year or two, we've seen T-Mobile change the mobile industry pretty much on it's own by ending built-in subsidies in favor of lower monthly rates. Does anyone think that eventually all these various competitors (such as Sling, HBO Go Standalone, etc) will act in a similar manner, forcing "a la carte" cable just for cable companies to stay relevant?

None of these cable-cutting options are a great fit for me, and I guess I feel that my situation is not that uncommon: I only watch maybe 5 or so "core" channels a lot, and then a couple more channels I watching only 1 show from. The way cable packages are done I need to go up to a mid-high tier just based on the channels I watch, even though there's not a good reason for that.

The other problem I run into DVRing. I like cable because I tend to save a couple shows for a while, and don't like having to worry if they'll "disappear" next month or whatever. That one is probably an edge case, but it's the other
reason I have a hard time with switching over to a streaming-only service.

I have DirecTV and I'm mad at them for their deceptive premium channel offers.

Twice I've been called and been told something along the lines of:

Agent: Congratulations! Since you're such a valued customer, we are unlocking HBO/Showtime for 3 months!

Me: Ok, cool so I get all of that free for 3 months?

Agent: No, we will give you a trial discount of x a month for 3 months, from there it will go back up to full price.

First time this happened, I wasn't inquisitive enough (The agent NEVER stated that I'd be paying for these for three months- made it sound like it was free). And so their manager called back (because they monitored the call) and explained it. Told them I wasn't interested.

Just about two months ago they called again with the same spiel, I told them I wasn't interested, and got added anyway. Still clearing that up.

I'm gonna hit you until candy comes out.
I'm annoyed with DirecTV's and Dish's pricing as well. They'll give you a bunch of discounts for the first 12 months, but since you're in a 24 month contract, the price goes up to $$$ridiculous and you have no recourse to try to get discounts, since you're stuck no matter what. I'd rather they just flatten it, figure out how much the first 12 months are, the second 12 months, divide by 24 and just let me pay like $55/month instead of $35 the first 12, then like $80 the next 12. Or whatever it turns out to be.

I ran into this with Dish. Call and ask for a retention specialist. You won't get the $35 again, but they will knock the price down if you even hint at wanting to cancel. This annoying part is that they'll only discount it for 6 months, so you'll have to call in twice to get through your last year.

Separate question and I apologize if it's been discussed before, but are there any cheap options for getting the basic broadcast channels? I'd like to cancel Dish and move to Sling TV or nothing at all, but my wife would kill me if we didn't have a way for her to watch the local news in the morning. I'd love to go OTA, but we live on the backside of a hill from all the towers.

I live in the middle of nowhere where we cannot get any OTA. Your best bet is, if you have cable internet, to see if you get digital channels through the same line as your internet. We just moved our set up around and are now able to hook into our tv. We get around 26 channels (all of the locals, WGN, cspan 1,2, and 3 as well as 12 PBS channels)

I always thought the inclusion of commercials on channels that you had to pay for was a little weird...

But I learned to ignore them by hitting the fast forward button on the DVD/VHS recorder.

It's not entirely unlike using AdBlock Plus and NoScript in my web browser (although I obviously enable the ads on the Something Awful Forums). I think ads increase page load times by 2-300%, but I could be imagining that. And getting rid of some mystery scripts also seems to improve load times, almost, but not quite bringing things up to text browser speeds.

Does anyone know when AMC is officially coming to Sling TV? We cut cable last month and are running on Roku these days and just picked up Sling, which is fantastic so far, but getting AMC is a huge deal to us. I'm buying what I need on Google Play right now as it comes out, but I haven't seen any word on it since they announced it was happening almost a month ago.

I don't like the look of it...
Is there a consensus on which is the better streaming device to go with on this Sling TV promotion? I have an Xbox One already hooked to our main entertainment system, and with the options for a Roku 3, Roku Stick, Amazon Fire TV, or Fire TV stick, I wondered if there was a concrete reason one is better than the others? I have a nice fast wireless AC network, so speed is not a concern here. I'd probably use the device for a bedroom TV, so I was wondering if one stood out over the others. I already have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

So far, I've been incredibly impressed by the picture quality on Sling when I've had issues loading YouTube videos in the past. Granted, I've only had it a couple days so I haven't really had a lot of viewing hours, but so far, I'm very happy with it. And AMC is icing on the cake so I don't have to pay $2.99 per Walking Dead episode anymore.

Tried the Fire TV with the promo, and our family prefers the Roku 3. It's just a matter of your tastes. With the Roku 3, every app is its own ecosystem. With the Fire TV/Stick, it's 90% Amazon, 10% everything else (I get why, of course). For us, searching for Prime exclusive content was easier on the Roku than the Fire TV. Plus, the Roku has IR built in, so I could still use my Harmony.

I already have a living room NUC HTPC running Kodi, but I did test that on the Fire TV and it worked well enough to put away my bedroom HTPC for now and use the Fire TV in the back. I'll miss having access to Prime Music and Pluto.TV in the living room, but we prefer the Roku. The voice search on the Fire TV is great, though, and it is something that I hope Roku incorporates in their next version.

Apparently Viacom has filed legal action against nick reboot. This was done without any notice to me, the website operator (an email or something would have been nice - just saying). Thankfully I stumbled upon an article about it or I might never have found out. Who knows, maybe that was the intention.

This is the very first time I've heard anything from Viacom since starting this site back in 2012. Although nothing was ever communicated to me directly, I still take the allegations made against nick reboot very seriously. As such, I've decided to lock down access to the site in order to avoid causing further damage to the "Nickelodeon" brand.

I want to close with stating that nick reboot is not "malicious" and was never meant to be taken as such. I have the utmost respect for Viacom and the "Nickelodeon" brand and would have been more than willing to work with Viacom on this matter had I been contacted.

Is there anything else hanging out there right now besides Playstation? I would really like DVR support and it looks like Playstation has a better channel lineup overall but who knows when and where they are going to launch widely, I doubt before the Sling device promo subscription runs out.

So, I've recently moved to an apartment and I would rather spend the majority of my hard earned dollars on a better internet package than a cable/internet package (live in Canada).

I've been looking around and am really baffled at the range of options I have for antennas. I've done some research into the distance of the transmitters and it seems like I'll need an amplified antenna (everything is either within 20miles or over 40).

Is there a solid indoor antenna that is "the go to" for most people? I'm high off the ground, about 100ft so geography won't be an issue. I keep reading good reviews on one antenna and then I'll read awful reviews on the same one, its like no consensus on any.
