Installed the FSWerks short shift kit on my FoST today. Piece of cake install. Set at 30% throw reduction, this is how it should have felt from the factory. The longitudinal throws are now as short as the lateral throws, if that makes sense. 10/10 would by again. snick snick

There's a few vids on youtube and threads on focusst.org for the range of short shift plates out there; the procedure is the same. You just remove the the airbox and some associated piping and bolt the plate onto the shift weight. I chose the FSwerks plate as the bolts install from the top. $79.95 for crisper. shorter shifts. Easy to undo back to stock; it's a win/win IMO. Stolen pics:

I just installed the Injen intake on the FiST and it sounds great. No discernable power gains or losses, but I didn't expect anything. I just wanted to hear the turbo and didn't want to install a BOV. It's not too loud. Driving with music on sounds exactly the same as it did before the intake but when the music's off it sounds great. The heat shield was a pain in the rear end though, probably because I've got big hands. I don't really understand how an intake can affect throttle response, but all the car forum people are adamant that they get better throttle response after an intake (or tightening some hose clamps). For the record my throttle response is exactly the same. Car doesn't feel any different to drive other than the choo-choo and the psssssssh. I drove a VW Golf GTI SE w/PP and w/Lighting Package. Some thoughts are: 1) fun, if not overly exciting to drive. The car is quick, but not fast. 2) the interior is better than others in its class, but it's also more expensive than others in it's class. as such it's not a better value, just a different option for if you prefer to pay a bit more for a bit nicer interior 3) the sunroof doesn't have an opaque shade, its just a mesh shade that covers the huge glass sheet of a sunroof. this bothers the hell out of me. 4) the seat bolstering makes the seats TINY. I'm a bigger guy, and could stand to lose a few pounds, but at 6'2"/250lbs i felt positively PINCHED in these seats. I could see wanting this if you were planning on autocrossing on the regular, because they would certainly keep you in place, but if you are just planning on DD this, then you should not be as big as I am. My wife is 5'6" and small and she commented that the seats felt snug to her, so she couldn't imagine me fitting in them long term. 5) i currently have a 2004 Civic Si hatch, which is not fast [160hp, much less torque than the GTI], but to be honest, the GTI felt not so much faster that it blew me away. It was a bit faster, noticeable to be sure, and much nicer. but it just doesn't do much for me overall I came away wondering if I might like the standard 1.8T better, with less bolstered seats and many thousands less. I mean for $31 or $32k it is a very competent package, but it just doesn't wow me in any way. I think the best thing about it maybe is the very subtle but attractive styling that looks good without drawing attention.

I've learned a lot from reading this thread and now I have fairly specific question I've seen touched on but would like to bring up directly. So I don't own and have never even been in a hot hatch. I live in Mississippi and it's always been mustangs, G bodies, anything american with a v8. Now, I've never actually owned a performance car of any kind, but that's the cultural background I come from. I, my friends, my girlfriend, we all think the new mustang is hot while hot hatches look like mini vans. Thing is, praise for appearance aside, I don't actually a mustang - I have a motorcycle for when I want to enjoy myself and (had) a mid size sedan when I need take people somewhere. Now the mid size sedan is gone and it's time to replace it with...perhaps something more fun? Well, I've looked at recent car for about 20k-25k and youtube reviews and this forum have turned me onto the hot hatch. The mix of performance, utility, and practicability lead to an inexpensive car that can move four with comfort and still give a little thrill on the way to work. I'll admit that next to a mustang or even a genesis coupe they don't catch my eye, but there's absolutely no way I could seat 4 in those, let alone the admittedly appealing AE86. No, I have to throw off my upbringing and admit I want a tiny mini van that goes quick and turns hard. Since I do want large back seat, I'd say that about narrows it down to either the FoST or the GTI, and that's my question today. I (highly) prefer the look of the GTI. Remember, I don't like the exterior of either vehicle, so it mostly comes down to the interior, and the GTI interior looks very, very nice. I'm also interested in having as comfortable of a car as possible, with performance being secondary. Really it all seems to point to the GTI, except that I'm worried about reliability and ease of maintenance. I've only ever owned the most robust of domestics or Japanese cars, and I'm not at all sure I should be looking into Super German Engineering, especially since I'd really rather buy a car that was a few years old with a around 30k already on the odometer. So here's the question: Is the GTI less reliable then the FoST? It's more costly to fix right? Does the GTI interior fall apart faster? If I do get a GTI, is it more advisable than with other cars that I go new for the warranty? Test drives can tell me what I think of either car when they're new, but I'm hoping for some anecdotes of how they'll seem when they've put on some years and some miles. You know, really, in thinking typing this out, I'm starting to think the answer is to buy a used FoST and wait for the new speed 3, I think I'd actually enjoy the look of that car both inside and out.

One thing I noticed that conflicted with the reviews was the interior - everyone seems to think it's crowded and over-busy, but it all looks fine to me. Yes there's a lot of buttons but that's because there's a lot of stuff in there that needs them, you're not supposed to try to press them all at once while simultaneously blasting down a B-road.

 I've had my 2010 GTI since 2012 and haven't had any issues. It's a great all-around car and the Autobahn interior is fantastic. The only issue I've had is that the clutch has started slipping when APR Stage I is engaged but fine when in stock power (47k miles). The PO had it installed when new. A+, would buy again.

I would never try to make anyone I like sit behind me in the Focus, as there is very minimal room between the back of the drivers seat and the front of the back seat without compromising my driving position, which I won't do.

I put the driver seat exactly where I would want it if I was driving and then I jumped in the back seat right behind it to see if I fit/how uncomfortable it was. I fit just fine and I was really surprised.

I also think, regarding FoST rear seat room, reviews say the FiST recaro leather seats take up a noticeably larger amount of room, and since many (most?) people spring for the recaro seats in the focus and that may part of the issue. I think it's also worth considering that that the base model of the GTI compares better to the base model FoST. But ugh, the thought of all that new car deprecation I'd see on buying anew GTI. I've never bought a new car in my life.

The Recaros bulge out at the top, above where the knees would be so if you're seating adults or children (not in a rear facing child seat) the Recaros shouldn't affect their ability to fit over the stock seats. I have a FiST without Recaros so I could fit the baby seat in there, but I tried sitting in the back of both and there was plenty of room for me (6'1") to sit in the back after setting the front seats to where I would be comfortable in them.

Is it possible to pull a small (4x6) trailer with a GTI? I really really really want to replace my pickup truck, but I've got some work equipment I need to haul from time to time. I wouldn't be doing it every day, more like a few times a year.

When I was looking at hot hatches, the biggest thing I noticed was how much more rear seat leg room the GTI had over the FoST. I'm not really big by any means (5'10"), but with the driver seat in my preferred position, there was TONS of rear legroom. Not so much in the Focus.

I took that thing on road trips from Dallas to New Orleans, Nashville, and Raleigh, and nobody ever complained about riding in back.

So I need some advice. I smacked a curb two weeks ago in my Fiesta ST on the front passenger side, wheel was turned to where the entire rim face took the impact at about 10-15 mph. Some light curb rash (cheap 15 inch rims and snow tires) no other visible damage. My steering wheel was slightly off so I took it to the dealer to have an alignment done. They swear up and down nothing else was wrong except needing alignment, nothing bent or broken. Well all the wheel weights are still on, tire pressures at spec but the car has a slight shake above 65 and it feels unsteady or almost "drunk" on turn in. It definitely doesn't feel right. Seeing how cheap the tie rods, sway bar etc are so cheap should I grab them for that side and toss them on when I do the springs I got or take it somewhere else to pinpoint the exact issue? Not a huge deal just driving my OCD nuts, this coupled with all the warranty fixes I've had done so far I'm tired of being at a shop all the time.
