The Australian team has never said "oh look we wont stop being a pack of bastards on the field". Seeing people (and some journalists) saying "Oh look Australia is being hypocritical" is getting a little old and boring. God forbid how you would react to 70s-80s era West Indies bowling.

I loathe to trudge further into this, but I at least think its worth mentioning that in Australia at least, there was very little criticism of Sean Abbott or the tactics of short pitch bowling. It was treated as a freak tragedy, one that shocked the cricket world and cause a lot of introspection , but very very little of it was aimed at short pitch bowling or "aggresive" cricket. Most of that was what commentators and observers themselves read into it, for good or bad.

Lets stop talking about Phil Hughes and how awful the aussie team are to people and instead lol at England. loving hell Bell, 14 balls for 39 runs, then you decide you're going a bit too quick and take another 40 balls to score 13? But more over, who the gently caress decided 16 balls at the end of an innings were only worth 3 runs?

Mister Chief posted:Did you not look at the bowling figures yet? The bowlings either brilliant or poo poo, no in between for England. The constant is the batting being utterly pedestrian. One of the commentators said its like England are one world cup behind in what they think they need and he was exactly right. Everything they do with the bat is old fashioned compared to all the other nations. When things go to poo poo they bring in more test players instead of the shorter form specialists and get really surprised when 300, a par score at the last world cup, is easily chased down at this one, where 350-400 is looking normal.

I know Boycott is a curmudgeon and wife beater, but England really needs someone with the amount of passion he has running the show somewhere along the line. I know he would just fill it with Lancashire wankers or whatever, but at least he cares.

I don't think the bowling should get off that easily. 300 isn't par these days, but most teams would be able to take more than 1 wicket defending 200. They are dross. And the fielding was horrendous to boot.

I gotta admit, I'm both surprised that England's shitheap of a middle order got us to 310 and that our bowlers couldn't even make the tiniest stab at defending it. No matter what the pitch, 300+ is something you can bowl at, and the bowling is the settled experienced part of the side.

Butt Wizard posted:Look England isn't currently playing, someone here has to be awful for the sake of consistency. Mitchell Johnson is practically the most friendly fast bowler in the world. I really don't think he wants to actually hurt the batsman. His short ball is a weapon because it's hard to play and it can put the batsman off. There are mean fast bowlers who do relish in hitting the body. Johnson doesn't seem to be like that. He almost started weeping when he hit kohli at the Adelaide oval.

With England there is a lot going on. It doesn't help that cricket is out of the reach of anyone without pay TV and English cricketers are almost exclusively from non state schools. There was a lot of good will towards the English side 10 years ago but they burnt it all up in record time by losing to Pakistan immediately after the 05 ashes and getting pumped by Australia in the return leg. There are a couple of noted Australian cricketers who didn't come from state schools (like Watson) but very few in NSW. If anything (going to a fancy school) that hurts the development of players in NSW. Take Steve Smith had he gone to a private school he'd have just played against other private schools in the GPS comp. As he went to a public school he played against men from like 12.
