Healthcare horror story chat seriously scares the poo poo out of me. Like, you guys ought to save some of these stories to tell around a spooky campfire because wow. I've got coverage, but I hope I'll never have to use it. With any luck, I'll survive against all odds into my 70s/80s without any major chronic illnesses, and then I'll be vaporized instantly in a freak accident, requiring absolutely no medical treatment.

It was about 2012 that the conservative gov't of Spain started rolling back aspects of their socialized healthcare. In those days I bought El Jueves religiously. They had an issue mocking the changes that showed a doctor saying "COPAY OR DIE." I remember thinking "hey that's the way it is, ain't it?" Then I realized for it to be the centerpiece subject of a satirical magazine it was probably a hosed up idea.

When I was maybe 14 or so, I managed to put my hand right the gently caress through the huge-rear end plate glass window that divided our entrance hallway from the living room. We went to the hospital, had it cleaned, examined, and stitched up within a couple of hours, and I was sent on my way with some painkillers and instructions not to gently caress around and open the wound back up. It cost us no bongdollars because the NHS is a wonderful thing.

All you get in the Canadian system are people complaining about how they had to wait an hour in the emergency room for a sprained ankle when a person who was in a car crash and another who had a stroke are wheeled in before them. I walked into the side of a metal automatic door when working at the grocery store because i turned my head when i heard two cars collide in the parking lot. It was so deep i couldn't actually feel it, but one of the cashiers screamed when she saw me because blood was completely covering my side. The supervisor told me I had to go to the hospital, but the front end manager said I couldn't because we were too busy. I simply walked out and called my mom to come take me to the hospital, while the manager yelled at me to get back to work. It took the store manager to tell her to shut up and let me go. Anyways, my mom came down and picked me up and took me to the ER, where they gave me some gauze to hold over the wound until they could see me. All the while I could hear some obese woman chowing down on a dozen donuts going on about how "last time I was here I almost died and no one cared! They say I need to stop eating, but what do they know?" having Tim Hortons inside hospitals is a terrible idea. God drat Canadians and their coffee addiction. They put 3 stiches in, cleaned me up, told me I was lucky I didn't crack the bone, and sent me on my way. After they took care of the guy who fell off a scaffold. Triage bitches! I can understand where 90% of RW beleifs come from, but health care isn't one of them. Very few things you need healthcare for are caused by things you do. Rich and Poor have as much chance of getting into an accident or getting sick. Cancer isn't something unemployed people get. The whole "you should get a better job with insurance!' argument doesn't make sense because if everyone had healthcare there would be no need. Doctors opposing it because they think they won't make any money? Most of the kids I grew up with had doctor parents, and they went to Vale or Nice for march break.

I remember teaching about the ACA in a medical ethics class, before it went into effect. I spent most of the class talking about health care costs around the world and health outcomes, as well as medical research costs and medical bankruptcy. At one point a student raised their hand and asked "where do you stand?" Well, since I try to retain neutrality, I said something vague and unhelpful. The response was "oh come on, look at what you just presented us and tell us with a straight face that you can defend the current system." They got me, because I loving couldn't.

Well, they might make a bit less because it dissolves the whole system of a Pharmacorp paying doctors to prescribe their meds, but as you say I don't think I can think of an advanced economy where doctors are badly off, nor can I bring to mind any where people think doctors should be anything less than our best-paid public servants.

For a lot of them it's the idea that the free market is inherently more efficient than the government. Therefore the US system is inherently more efficient than these terrible socialized systems and anyone who says otherwise is either stupid or pushing an agenda, why would they lie like that otherwise? This idea is the basis of a lot of their economic beliefs and if they allowed that it wasn't a fundamental rule of economics then the whole thing falls apart. I spent a month in the hospital here in France a couple of years ago because of severe burns and one guy I know has steadfastly refused to believe my stories about my experiences. He's a poster boy for the influence right wing media, he makes very good money for the rural part of Michigan he lives in, probably $60k or so and still lives with his even more well off parents so has almost no bills. His parents listen to talk radio all day and he gets the daily summary from them at dinner. I visited Michigan few weeks ago and his family has three large safes full of guns now, including a half dozen AR-15 variants, a sweet Tavor and at least 20 pistols and a handful of bolt and lever action rifles, as well as at least 10k rounds of various calibers. Because of what Rush et al tell him through his parents he's convinced that Obama is going to take all his guns away and/or society is going to collapse any day now due to an excess of socialism. It also seems to have affected his perception of reality because after looking at this photo of my hospital room he has mentioned to me on numerous occasions about how tiny it was and it's terrible condition, once even mentioning the flaking paint on the walls, despite that being nothing like reality. To this day he thinks I was joking when I told him they had wifi there and that's why I had my iPad because in socialist Europe the Internet is not only scarce but closely controlled by the government.

^^ That's very true. But I don't think it's just about them condescending when they travel, though that is certainly a stereotype. People from all over the world can be dumb, no doubt. But America really does have the market cornered in thinking that Western Europe is underdeveloped.

Right-leaning Americans have different rules the rest of the world for determining whether a healthcare system is good. Women having to have expensive, painful surgery to have an ovary removed because they couldn't get birth control to treat a cyst is a plus, because otherwise, whose pain would Rush Limbaugh masturbate to?

Scott Walker quit school in 1990 because he raped a girl. I think it works better this way than the standard format, because it is 1. completely believable, and 2. doesn't trigger meme recognition. Also, I think it's a wonderful coincidence that he did in fact quit school in 1990.
