I think a thing to remember is that early on in the apocalypse, the larger the group, the more likely they all will die due to most people not knowing how to handle them, or not knowing that everyone turns, or general idiotstuff. Funneling a large swath of the population in a direction could actually backfire and result in that just becoming a zombification highway.

Also, the government has lost control. A lot of agencies are working independent of each other. Perhaps one group told people to evac, obviously some armed forces didn't agree and told Deanna and her group to detour over to alexandria. It's dystopia, no one really knows what the "right" thing to do is.

Islands would offer a degree of safety higher than the mainland from the herd effect but still, if its a global catastrophe eveyone who dies of natural causes will still rise again and infect others. Hawaii is probably overrun.

I bet small, low population islands are doing pretty ok. If there's only like, a hundred people on the whole island, it's not like a bunch of them are going to die at once, so there's not much chance of getting overrun.

I think it depends. You also run into the problem of smaller communities being ill informed of how to properly dispose of the bodies. Depending on how how many people one zombie can bite before they figure that out and make the headstabbing normalized it could get out of control before they can get a handle on it.

They wouldn't have to do a headstabbing, they could just restrain the deceased like Hershel tried. If the zombie managed to bite someone they could probably figure out what's going way quicker. A close-knit community would figure out guy dies->bites someone->that guy dies->that guy tries to bit people pattern really quickly. Probably more quickly than a large city, because everybody knows what's going on, they don't have to piece the story together from multiple hospitals, police reports, etc.

I mean, we know all this, but the general populations of west africa still don't realize you can get ebola from getting in contact with sweat and other bodily fluids. The majority of the problem there is that these small communities just have no idea how to handle infected peoples.

I wonder why we never saw them raid warehouses (like those used as Walmart/supermarket or Amazon distribution centers) for stuff like water and food. Probably because they tend to be in industrial and heavily populated areas...

I thought it was interesting how they portrayed the group as being unusually stable (relatively speaking, of course), and somewhat unwilling at first to be separate from each other. Almost like a military family of sorts.

I also am not sure how that particular camp managed to survive for so long with such a weak defense, unless there is something horrible going on that nobody has spoken of yet. The quiet girl kinda acts like an abuse victim. And while I hate to admit it, it does appear to be the one case where socialism might actually work; then again, in a post-zombie world, there probably aren't a whole lot of government styles that would work in any form.

I hope Carol ends up finding a husband and she becomes the abuser.

I find it racist for you to suggest that people of African descent are too ignorant to properly handle contagions.

It wasn't just Africans that were responsible for the spread of HIV to just about every nation and race. And besides, even though HIV is 100% fatal, it's not as bad as ebola.

VVVVV - You just answered your own question.

It doesn't have anything to do with them being african and everything to do with them still believing in witch doctors. I mentioned ebola because it has a similar R0 to what I would think the zombie contagion would be. People would have to be going around loving dead bodies and doing dead body blood transfusions in order for it to behave like HIV.

Maybe into DC itself? Like they did with Atlanta? There is the river separating DC from Virginia. Approximately 500,000 enter DC every workday today as it is. It wouldn't be hugely inconceivable to have more than that, although I'm sure the city would be in utter chaos. And can you imagine the delays on the Blue/Orange/Silver lines? Sheesh.

Really, it's probably just more of a matter of suspension of disbelief.

This is not a racist comment at all.

This is actually well discussed and documented during the most recent ebola outbreak. I cannot remember the specifics but many of the tribes have close contact with the dead as part of their funeral rituals. There are huge campaigns to educate them on the hazards of doing this.

One NPR story I heard was talking from their perspective how a bunch of foreign white people come in in lab coats and try to tell them what they're doing is wrong despite doing it for centuries. There's a rejection of the notion and fear that their beliefs will ruin whatever afterlife is for the deceased.

So, I havn't read the comics up to this point and this is basically speculation but it might contain some vague spoilers.

The three people that were exiled from Alexandria, they're going to be coming back, right? I imagine that Rick and co. were brought in because a force of people have threatened to take the town and they wanted an army of their own for defense. I'm also guessing that Nagan is one of those three, knowing only that he is a name associated with this section of the plot. I can see Rick and co. starting a coup, using up bullets, wrecking walls, etc. only to have a 'You fools' moment when they realize they needed everyone to survive what is coming. It could also be none of this.

I hope it doesn't end up like that zombie show produced by The Asylum where the exiled people were actually a part of some kooky religious sect, and then everyone in the perfect city end up becoming infected, and...

Glenn has turned into just another jaded rear end in a top hat over the course of the last year or so (approx. since he got that stupid zombie flu). He doesn't resemble the character he used to be, and he is now a completely disposable line delivery system Mk. 2000. Wanting characters to display character traits isn't unreasonable.

Glenn and Maggie have had, legitimately, nothing to do in years. I don't know if Scott Gimple doesn't like them, if he prefers his new characters or what but given that they were once upon a time leads it is a little strange. I feel like most of the Daryl/Carol material would have been there's under Darabont or one of the other runners.
