They are - the anime excises the entire Great Tokyo Empire part of the story, but still ends with Akira absorbing Tetsuo to save the world. It basically smushes the final fight at the end of Volume 6 onto Volume 2 so that Tetsuo's resurrection of Akira is also the trigger for the psychic explosion that absorbs and cancels his powers out.

This in turn reminded me of the music video to wamdues "king of my castle", which was done exclusively with ghost in the shell animation. As a kid I found this insanely cool, and it made me watch more adult oriented anime movies.

The song is called "Making of a Cyborg." Kenji Kawai, the composer, wrote an extended version for concert. You can see him in the video drumming. He's wearing the black coat with white markings on it, to the right of the singers.
