I don't know what the gently caress the OP is on about and most of this thread is full of architechtural goodness as far as my untutored eye goes, but I think many will agree that this is an eyesore: Mississauga (Ontario, Canada) city hall. Can I nominate Mecca for this thread? It's kind of funny in a dark way that the holiest place in Islam is being near-perpetually hosed with and re-developed into oblivion. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/redevelopment-of-mecca-bulldozers-bear-down-on-site-of-mohameds-birth-9142458.html

Maybe not quite on topic, but those outlandish unbuilt towers remind me of the these works by the Brodsky and Utkin who were "Paper Architects."

Buckminster Fuller's Old Man River proposal, meant to essentially replace East Saint Louis and house 125,000 people in quality housing. Half mile diameter across the top of it, full mile in diameter at the base. Of course, being a Fuller design, it came with the mandatory dome. The community loved it and the state of Illinois offered to finance it. So why didn't it get built? quote:As the first favorable publicity occurred, it was inevitable that Illinois’s political representatives would quickly offer the East St. Louisans their aid in securing government funds, which funds, however, would involve so many restrictions and compromises as to utterly emasculate the OMR City’s design rationale. Thus it was a second victory for the project when I was able to dissuade the community from being tempted by the “millions” of dollars tendered them. Yes, Fuller convinced the community leadership of East Saint Louis, which has a 70% poverty rate, that they should try and find their own financing for it without turning to the government.

I think what annoys me most about the mecca thing is the anti-preservationist stance of the Saudi royals. They hold that preserving the history of the religion/area (which are rather intertwined) would distract the believers and be a form of idol worship - and that's a bit of a shame.

steinrokkan posted:I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Bucharest Palace of Congress, aka supposedly the largest building in the world. It's also one of the few architectonical failures that arguably got their author killed as it was a symbol of Ceausescu's arrogance, and the stage of his capture prior to his execution. I was waiting for this thing to get posted. I expected it on page 1, really. You forgot to mention that although it's a usable structure, it remains unfinished. There's also a central library that never got windows or other important features to keep rain out, and sits abandoned. There's at least one unfinished road traffic tunnel that has been in progress since before Ceausescu fell, and on and on. Don't forget all the bizarre ad-hoc building that has gone on since the fall of communism, and the pathological historic preservation laws that prevent renovation of centuries-old landmarks. It's more profitable for landowners to let the structures rot where they stand, and then to use the land for some chintzy crap after the original building has self-destructed. You could fill this thread with Romania.

The clock tower building is insane, it's the fourth tallest freestanding structure in the world. The smaller towers would be massive skyscrapers on their own; the four beside the clock tower are roughly the same height as Germany's tallest building.
