Freaking out about whether calling something "a piece of poo poo made in China" is offensive, is the horrible thread failure of the day. What next, am I going to have to probate the next time someone calls an absurdly complex and fragile design "too German", or how American cars fall apart, or how Italian cars just catch fire?

To chime in on the "bulging tire" chat... our bus garage sees about one seperation a month, due to our corporate policy of using rethreads from the lowest bidder, the lack of care from busdrivers to check tire condition and pressure before shift and utterly retarded "bus preppers" who calculates how much air a tire gets by the time it takes to grab a coffee and a smoke. The seperation varies from "bump" to "full on muffintop". It seems that tires in poor condition seem to have an increased chance of disforming when you lift the bus. One of my techs have a permanently hosed up wrist from trying to pop a tire by stabbing it many moons ago. After this incident the SOP have been mounting a sharpend rod on a fork extender for our forklift. I have no idea if that is the best way to do it, but it looks fun so i dont intervene. When the airbags for the suspension in a bus bursts when you are under it wrenching....gently caress that noise

I don't think you're going to be hearing any noise for awhile if you're near an airbag that's just popped.

Here's the porn I promised. Piston broke, not sure why yet. There's a gouge in the cylinder wall, might be able to be bored out, but I won't know until I get it to a machine shop. Cylinder head doesn't look beat up, need to really clean it up to know. Exhaust valve on #3 is bent, though. Not sure how coolant got in the oil pan, won't know until I get the block and pistons out, as the head gasket was intact. Crappy cell phone pics incoming, not sure why the focus is being useless. Here's the ruined piston. #3 is the bottom one, notice how the exhaust valve isn't quite flat. No major work without bleeding, apparently. The pushrods feel pristine, no mushrooming. I'll probably get all new kit, though. If the block and head are salvageable, this bitch is getting stroked. 190,000 miles, not too bad, considering the way I drive.

Do yourself a favor and get a known good block to build. I bet when you pull that hammerfucked piston out, you'll find the wristpin helpfully blasted a hole in one side of the cylinder wall. If not that, the piston probably jammed sideways in the bore at one point and lifted the head enough to let coolant by the gasket.
|
# ? Mar 5, 2015 04:08 |
|
I don't doubt that the block is probably hosed, I just can't see well enough in there to know how hosed. The amount of coolant that I pulled from the oil pan indicates that something is hosed up.

I'm going to have to sawzall the bolts off of the downpipe/header joints. They are disintegrating and not holding anything together very well.
