Just watched Heathers. Such an 80s movie. I love the idea of someone getting suspended for bringing a real gun to school. Also something that really struck me is how similar Slater's character is to Heath Ledger's Joker, from the coat to the posture, mannerisms, and even speech patterns. I wonder if that was a big influence or just an odd coincidence.

I could definitely see that, I was so distracted by the similarities that I didn't stop to consider that Slater himself might have been taking major cues from someone else.

I thought the new Aziz was kind of disappointing. It felt like he was playing things safe for the most part, and his timing was all over the place. Not terrible by any means, but I thought it was easily the weakest of his sets that are on Netflix.

Yeah, I watched it earlier and I felt the same way :smith:

I saw him live last year and some of the material in this special was reused from that tour when I saw him. Hell, it may have even been shot on that same tour. I don't know. At first I thought "Maybe his stuff just isn't as funny the second time around?", but that can't be because I've rewatched his other specials on Netflix a few times over the years and they're hilarious, even after a few rewatches. I guess the material in this one just isn't nearly as strong as those others.

I actually forgot it was even on there until I stumbled upon it. I'm in the minority because I kind of like the myth-arc episodes, if only because we get into some cool Alien poo poo. And the show, so far at least (except for the incredible Jose Chung, episode in the clip above) doesn't do Aliens unless it's myth-arc related.

But the cockroach one was great. I laughed so hard at the meta roach.

Yeah, it's kind of rare and nice to see a science fiction show that's also a lighter family drama. It reminds me of the family-hour cornball sci-fi of my early adolescence like Seaquest and Earth 2, which were nice because they were a bridge for me into heavier science fiction but also conventional enough that my mom and dad would watch it with me.

She's even ashamed of it in exactly the way that people are ashamed of having been in actual pornography:

http://www.avclub.com/article/ellie-kemper-40258

quote:

AVC: You’re in a bunch of web videos for a bunch of comedy groups. What does it usually take to get you involved?

EK: Them asking me. That’s all. Certainly when I lived in New York. People were shooting web videos all the time. You know, I don’t know if you’ve seen “Blowjob Girl.” Do you know what I’m talking about?

AVC: Yeah, I’ve seen it.

EK: Suddenly I was like, “Oh great, he hasn’t heard of it,” and then I didn’t want to bring it up. I really don’t like that video, and I wish that I hadn’t done it, even though I know that it’s a joke. I hate that it got sort of big, because I don’t think that it’s that funny and I don’t want that to be the epitome of my work. It’s just one video in a sea of many, but it has made me conscious of not wanting to do a video like that again. That would be my only criteria.

AVC: At the Just For Laughs festival last year in Montreal, they mentioned you at the Variety’s “10 Comics To Watch” panel as “Ellie Kemper, who you may know from that blowjob video…” It was strange, saying it like that.

EK: Right! Okay. Thank you. I’m so happy you said that. It does make me mad, because even the title of that video—if it had been “Bad Job,” or something that wasn’t as explicit… My parents are not amused. My mom was like, “Ellie, not everyone in your family is a comedian.”

Absentia is way better than I thought it would be. The cover art for it and even the description are pretty bad. And there are a couple spots with cringeworthy infodump dialogue but only a couple. Like Kill List I would say go in blind because it's way more interesting than the premise would suggest.

Last night I watched Parallels, which got added this month. It's not so much a movie as a two episode pilot for a TV series that's probably never going to get made. It's a shame because the idea has a lot of potential, that of a building that jumps to different Earths every 36 hours. Sort of like a remake of the show Sliders. It ends with a big cliffhanger/mystery and what would be a really good season long story arc. I knew that going in and still watched it because I can't get enough alternate universe plotlines.

was just browsing instantwatcher to find something to watch, preferably horror, and one of the top things is ABCs of Death 2 - I had a feeling that that film, or the original, were discussed itt a while ago and i couldn't remember whether people liked it or not. Rather than search this thread I just googled the film title, and it seems like reviews are, fair to middling, IMDB doesn't like it but the guardian didn't mind it.

this story however, about a substitute teacher who literally got sent to jail for screening the original film for students is hilarious, and guaranteed i was going to watch the sequel.

I love the X-Files. They put out a few terrible episodes, and lots more mediocre episodes, but its highs are very high. Smart pulpy stories, cool ideas, great chemistry from the two leads.

I put it in roughly the same tier as West Wing and Twin Peaks - they were hamstrung by some of the limitations of the time (low budgets, need to put out 20+ episodes each season, need to accommodate viewers missing episodes since they were pre-DVR) but they were made with care, cinematic and visual in a way that was rare for the time, and great fun. All of those shows were kind of a gateway to the current generation of high-quality TV.

First season was pretty hit-or-miss, but there are some good ones in there. I love Ice, their take on The Thing/The Thing from Another World.

I'd say just watch some of the fan-favorite monster of the week episodes. The mythology episodes have a lot of good stuff in them, but there's no payoff and they can be frustrating. My picks:

Ice
Clyde bruckman's final repose
Pusher
Drive (if you're a breaking bad fan and want to see another Vince Gilligan/Bryan Cranston collaboration)
Beyond the Sea
Home

There are also a bunch of great episodes that twist around the normal approach of the show, but they rely on you knowing the characters and relationships going in so they can play with them. Like:
Jose Chung's from Outer Space (the best of these)
Bad blood
Postmodern Prometheus
Small potatoes
X-cops

Edit: oh yeah, squeeze too, good episode.

I don't think you need to know the premise or the characters at all to get Jose Chung's From Outer Space. It does have some things to say about the show, but they're really secondary to a smart story with big ideas at stake that's very well told and not even really about Scully or Mulder. They're just more eccentric characters in an ensemble cast headed up by Charles Nelson Reilly.

Do Quagmire for sure, too. It really gets at what the characters are about and what's at the core of their dynamic.

Zwabu

Eh that skippable blog is just too much text.

For someone like stickyfngrdboy who is trying to determine if the show is at all good, watch a few of the very best and most entertaining episodes. If you can't enjoy those I can say the show is definitely not for you.

For me, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose is the absolute best. It strikes a cool balance between humor (it's mostly funny) and real darkness, much as the show itself does over its run. It has one of the best guest roles ever by Peter Boyle and has incredible witty dialogue especially for the Bruckman character.

Also notable in the "funny" category:

Small Potatoes
Bad Blood
Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"
Humbug
Die Hand die Verletzt
(this is kind of a mix of funny and spooky)

Scary/Eerie/Unsettling:

Irresistible
Paper Hearts
The Host
Home

Really, if you can watch Clyde Bruckman and a few of the others and not be entertained or impressed, you've seen the best of the show and it's just not your cup of tea. But if you don't watch any of these and judge the show, you've missed out.
