I treat it all, except for a couple rare occasions where I've literally drank from a glacier, and it wasn't standing, flowing over ice and bedrock. It's like eating snow. There's no life up there that can transmit parasites. But I have severely lectured people drinking from streams below tree line, they're just asking to be sick. We have a lot of megafauna here that like to poo poo in or near rivers and lake shores. Especially horses. A number of popular trails are open to horse outfitters to take clients on day trips.

I live in the mountains of British Columbia and we've always been told the mineral content of the water can give you the runs if it doesn't give you beaver fever or something nastier. Gotta boil it. Continuing with the Goons in Mountains theme, these were taken around ~8,000 feet: This whole training exercise was a joint thing with an ANA signals intelligence group (it's a public thing, but i blacked out patches and faces just to be sure). We decided to do some war zone tourism and climbed up to an old, broken-down fort for maximum signal coverage of the city below. The locals say the structure itself was built by Iskandar (Alexander the Great), but I'm pretty sure it was just a hill fort built and abandoned by some warlord years ago to control the neighboring crossroads. and here's just me 1 year and 30lbs post mountain climbing adventures.

Just that if you're below tree-line, assume it's full of poo poo and disease. Ironically I just got over what was probably giardia from a trip to Mexico last month.

If you liked Yellowstone, make sure you hit Glacier. I did both and Glacier is head and shoulders above Yellowstone in the "Beautiful vista" department, and that is saying something since Yellowstone is pretty solid. We are thinking of having a week there then getting on a train to Seattle for a grunge pilgrimage, does that sound possible?
