Taxi Driver is pretty good even though it's a 70's movie. It's very grimy and nihilistic and the climax is pretty Hotline. The ending is an odd 180 to say the least

It's slow, sure, but also only 90 minutes long and still has various scenes with plenty of tension and action in it.

And giving HM2 a Taxi Driver ending would be pretty cool.

I would definitely second this. Most of the movie is about someone driving themselves to the point of committing something like what Jacket does. He hits rock bottom rather than going nuts. I always heard the last five minutes were some studio mandated reshoot and the original ending was the slow top down pan from the room to the police and emts outside.

When it comes to cinema difficulty Only God Forgives is basically Drive on expert mode. It was infamously booed at Cannes and despite the focus on violence it only has one real fight scene.

I enjoyed it but it's really a love it a hate it thing. If you're not going to watch it and you don't give a poo poo about spoilers you should at least watch said fight scene because it's :krad: even out of context.

Refn is one of my favorite directors, but Only God Forgives was having a real hard time winning me over.

Until that fight.

Then it was like the whole film clicked into place for me (as much as a bleak neo-noir mindfuck like OGF can click)

Yes. Its awesome because he was a psychopath on the verge the entire time before he actually starts to kill. Also the mask scene.

not so much thematically but if you want pure fight scenes The Raid and to some extent The Raid 2 has a lot of relentless fighting in hallways

I think Refn's a great director but based on having seen Drive, Valhalla Rising, and this, Drive is definitely the most straightforward and approachable of his movies. Anybody who watches the others expecting as conventional an arc or resolution as Drive is going to be disappointed; the credits for Only God Forgives thank Jodorowsky and it helped me come to grips with the film as one of those people who went in expecting Drive 2: Thai Harder or something.

Watch his poo poo because he makes good movies, not because of Hotline Miami, imo.

edit: drat that was a good movie. If you went into it expecting the type of movie that the first third or so is, you would come out of it acting like you'd just played Spec-Ops: The Line blind.
