(Admittedly, some of the brilliant audio I get is people with heavy Japanese accents, but that's what you get when you work for NHK. When Prime Minister Abe visits next month I expect to have to take up a meth habit to keep up with the work.)

How often do you guys ask to get files pushed back so you can do rush work? I never used to, but I've done it twice in the last week. The curious part is that no one ever seems to ask when it'll get turned in, or set a new due date for it, it's always just 'yeah, whateves'. Both times it was stuff that I knew wasn't particularly timely, but it seems odd that they don't want some sort of idea of when it'll be turned in.

Edit: Holy poo poo, I don't think there's any left, but if so, you guys should get in on this rush. I expected it to be like 7 women screaming at each other from beginning to end, but there's very little cross talk. I always got an impression from the audio only interviews I've done, which is many, of what this show is like, but god drat this is either a work of art, or a train wreck. I think it may be both.

Seems like DT is getting slammed lately, asking for people to fill out the schedule for the next week or two so they can gauge. Just in time for me to ask to be removed from the roster of a certain tattoo-related show. I haven't gotten any totally terrible files, but I dunno what it is about it, I just really, really hate the files. Maybe it's the way the producers run the interviews, seeming to allow the interviewees to just go on and on about poo poo, rather than the concise soundbites that seem to be the norm. Just really exhausting feeling for whatever reason...

Surely it can't be the thousand piddly little corrections and notes. I got one from the last batch advising me that my timecodes were wrong because some of them went up to 29 tenths of a second, while none of the client's files went above 23 tenths of a second. None of my software will do that. These files are all at the 29.97 framerate so I don't know what they're doing.

Wow, I take it all back. Just working through another that's exact same format, featuring a different guy who sits in silence for thirty seconds after each question, considering his answer, which ends up often being along the lines of "No" or "I don't know", plus a producer who is spending multiple minutes shuffling through scripts and notes. Flying through this at like 35+ minutes of tape/hour.

My favorite Ink Master moment was when one of them answered his phone on camera and I could just hear his wife through the line so I asked and they said to transcribe her too.

Which pretty much means that they can't be bothered to get the client to clarify poo poo like that and responding to you with an immediate, "Yes, transcribe that" is the easier choice. Sally told me that they want everything transcribed so that they can look for outtakes for blooper reels. Frankly, I'd like to think most transcribers are intelligent enough to be able to detect what is stupid bullshit that they will never use (like the phone call from the wife). I bet the editors of that show want to shoot themselves in the head every time they have to wade through those horrifically cluttered transcripts.

The ability to determine what's meant to be on camera/off camera is one of the skills that better transcription houses absolutely adore in a transcriber for precisely that reason. A lot of the work I get is for commercials, where they only want the answers and specifically the bits that are meant to make it into the commercial; one client who gives me that work constantly gripes about other transcribers leaving in tons of junk she has to take out. Generally, when you have a customer who says "I want everything no matter what" they don't know what they're doing and quickly pare things down to a sensible request in the next batch. Or occasionally they're just a huge pain in the balls.

On the previously mentioned rush project, they played a clip of something, which was basically just two women screaming inaudibly and hitting each other, but I sent an email asking if I should transcribe the clip anyways, which no one responded to. I turned it in with just [CLIP] Ceci of course sends it back at like 5am saying the clip has to be transcribed as well asap, and wants an ETA, but gently caress 5am. At like 8:30am she sends another email saying the client didn't actually need it transcribed anyways. Why would they? They've already produced and sound engineered it, even added some hilarious dubstep during the fight. I got both emails at once when I got up a little after 9.

The moral of the story is, the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Or, gently caress mornings.

I mean poo poo, why should I spend a day painstakingly transcribing a meaningless 70 minute video for like $52.50 when I could virtually cruise control my way through a show 44 minute episode of whatever for $55 for the night or $44 for the next day? Or in the case of tonight, $90 for 60 minutes.

How much harder is the ABS stuff to do? It's my understand that's mostly what JKL gives out yes?

I haven't sent out any ABS work to individual ICs yet--and in fact I don't even have a price point for that sort of set-up--but I do send ABS work out to other companies. DT was one of them until [some story my boss won't tell me about].

JKL could tell you better than I could what he sends out since I don't believe I've seen the whole range, but it's mostly complete (Either post or pre production) television shows of a wide variety (Principally reality, but I have gotten scripted shows as recently as the other day, sometimes with scripts included which is always cool and also fun as hell). Sometimes you get misc. work which can be internal stuff for companies or something that more resembles the kind of work you're used to or interviews/events that may or may not follow the captioning formats. Sometimes you get movies, which can be fun as hell especially if they're something hilarious, and that can run the gamut from softcore porn to CGI kids movie to stuff that someone drudged up from the mid-1900s to indie films at home at an event like Sundance to feature-length documentaries (All of which are movies I've seen). MOSTLY it's reality TV or game shows, but poo poo man, the average thing that DT squirts into your ear is garbage compared to even a complete reality show with 20-somethings doing 20-something stuff at each other.

Also, for the most part it works like this, with fairly clean lines, no need for stupid poo poo like uhs that break the flow unless you feel it appropriate to the situation to get those, and only rarely are speaker IDs needed on the projects I've worked:

{00:00:14}->- I am Shima Honnou and I'm a big dumb goon who posts too much about bullshit and isn't funny and you're watching Something Awful because you also have no life.
- I am a second speaker and even if I started talking during that you don't have to split it unless there's a meaningful pause of some kind because captioning as stupid as transcription.

Whereas with DT it would probably look like this:

LEGITIMATE ONLINE MONEYMAKING ROUND 3 [00:00:14]
SHIMA: I am Shima Honnou and uh um I-I-I'm...

LEGITIMATE ONLINE MONEYMAKING ROUND 3 [00:00:14]

ABS is definitely what you want to learn how to do if you're going to stick around in this business for a while. It pays better than raw tape transcription, you're working from completed shows so it's edited and mixed properly, and sometimes the stars align and you get stuff like scripts or caption files to help out. The complexity can vary, however, with simple dialog lists on the "easy" end of the axis, three-column timecode/on-screen/dialogue formats in the middle, and bastard jobs where you've got to have a TC in and out for every shot on the "gently caress this forever" end. The pay usually ascends with the difficulty, though, which is nice.

I cut my teeth on ABSes with DT, and it was always a mixed bag. The best were HBO's, where you got a script and had to produce what in the end looked like a script, so if you were clever enough you could basically text-dump the PDF and reformat it and then just verify the dialogue and drop in timecodes as needed. The problem was, they also had the nightmarish ones and of course being DT they didn't pay any better for those.

Amusingly, I've actually done JKL's as-broadcast scripts before. I work for one of the companies you guys farm them out to. I like your format, as it's one of the least painful ones I've had to work with. I need to actually start picking them up more often, but I've just gotten spoiled with my crazy clip reel work and writing jobs.

Yeah, what is up with that? I got 25 minutes yesterday and I wasn't even on the schedule. And I worked a ton this week and specifically wanted to clear out just this one day. I'm gonna begrudgingly do the work, because I'm available, but I hope I'm not setting a precedent here that that is okay.

FWIW, I was signed up yesterday and not signed up again until Tuesday. I didn't get anything today. :shrug:

I only got an assignment on a day I wasn't at all available once, and I just sent Sally a message saying hey, I'm not scheduled today and unavailable, and she was like my bad. Well, she probably said MY BAD, but you know. I know they sent that email out about rejecting assignments, but one, it's currently an empty threat. Even if you end up at the bottom of the list, they're clearly slammed and reach the bottom of the list every day, and two, Sally's pretty reasonable, I doubt she would actually dock someone for rejections when she's pretty clearly in the wrong.

I honestly do want to encourage you guys to keep at it. DT may not be the most fun place to work right now -- it definitely seems to have gone downhill somewhat since I was there last -- but there's a lot of good, even fun transcription work to be had out there, at rates that won't make you curse the day you bought your pedal. Once you've got enough experience under your belt to get that second client, your options open up immensely. It can take a while scouring Craigslist and the like to find new opportunities, but it's so worth it.

I'm too nervous to click the start thing because I would hate to expect one thing and then screw myself out of that sweet sweet transcription grind. :ohdear:

Yes, they provide you with a sample in the old format. Don't forget to get all of Alton's stutters.

It's been a while since I did the test, but here's what the format is generally like:

PROJECT NAME (YES, ALL THIS HEADER STUFF IS IN ALL CAPS FOREVER AS ARE TIMECODES)
DESCRIPTION: INTERVIEW WITH FULL NAME OF INTERVIEWEE
FILE NAME: INTERVIEW69
JANUARY X, 20XX (The year of Megaman)
TRANSCRIBED BY DAILY TRANSCRIPTION_YOUR INITIALS HERE

INTERVIEWEE: I speak words here, but you g-g-gotta get-get my stutters and um restarts and poo poo. Start the timecode when the first syllable comes out, if a file calls for full verbatim (And the test does), that can mean starting on a stutter. Don't use [INAUDIBLE] or [NON-INTERVIEW] if you can help it for the test, those are things you should use later and even then QC hates [INAUDIBLE] so you're better off guessing anyway.
