SiN Episodes Emergence did that too, but they hosed up the initial release and while the game would get harder, it would never get easier. (They fixed it in a patch a week later, but the pirate version still had that bug plus another fatal bug that made the game unfinishable.)

Another thing I like about Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is the way they justify some of the game mechanics. The first actual boss fight in the game is with Emmett Dalton during the Daltons' famous dual bank robbery at Coffeyville. Considering he's just a regular dude with a shotgun, at first it doesn't really make sense that you could have a boss fight against him since normal people go down in like 2 or 3 shots; but (as the game mentions) in real life Emmett got shot like 20+ times in the ensuing gunfight and still lived, so he's historically the only one you COULD have a boss fight with. And he gets away in the game too! :v:

There's also a mechanic akin to that fan theory about Nathan Drake's luck being his health in Uncharted. There's a meter that fills up over time and once it's full, if you take a lethal shot, your dude just so happens to be lucky enough to dodge the bullet (provided you move in the right direction) and then you get a free counter-attack.

The dueling is also great, something I thought Red Dead Redemption sort of lacked in. Initially it's simple: You hover your crosshair over a dude and your 'focus' fills up, and as soon as he draws time slows down just a bit (more after you pull your gun) and you get a chance to shoot before they do. One by one the game adds more mechanics to it; duel partners stop standing still, forcing you to keep the crosshair moving, you can press A and D to move your guy's hand closer to his gun to get a faster draw, and eventually enemies start shooting way faster than you so you can hold A and D after you draw to weave around the bullets Clint Eastwood style.

It's such a cool drat game :swoon:

Though honestly the way SiN Episodes handled its dynamic difficulty wasn't all that great to begin with, IMO.

I seem to recall Max Payne had a similar situation where loading quicksaves (versus full, proper saves) wouldn't trigger the game to ease back on the difficulty, so the game would just get more and more ridiculous as time went on.

Max Payne 2 did the difficulty scaling, but they got the math wrong. If you did well (say, in the beginning of the game when there's less challenge), the game would say "oh, he's breezing through it, let's ramp up", and push until you start losing. Typically this hits around a difficult fight anyway (bad cover, ambush, etc), but it wouldn't lower the difficulty in response until after you complete the fight on your ramped-up difficulty.

So then it says "oh he died 20 times, time to babymode this nerd", you'd rocket through the game for a bit until the game responded "drat he's flying, nuke him!" so you can sometimes get incredible difficulty swings. Bonus points if the game is mad at you during the escort sequence.

Just replayed Portal 2 recently, it's incredibly good for little things, especially the Cave Johnson section. All the old posters on the walls illustrate very well how Aperture was run in those days ("Remember to call a supervisor if you see OHSA inspectors"), and of course there's the whole thing where they went from athletes and war heroes as test subjects to badly paid volunteers to their own staff. My favourite poster is about the volunteers: right near that section's exit there's a booth where they would have picked up their payment with a sign that says "all forms must be filled out correctly to receive payment of $60." Not only did Aperture cover their asses so they could deny payment abitrarily, but the "$60" line is also a sticker covering a considerably larger number.

In 2005 I had some friends in college who got into competitive Mario Kart 64 time trials. They'd play for like 6-8 hours a day trying to shave milliseconds off of their 16 course total time and upload shaky screen footage to some scores site (ah, the days before YouTube.) One Friday night I went over for some drunk vs. play, and after we finished we decided to try to mythbust a rumor one of my friends had heard. Apparently if the results screen music plays long enough, there's a modified jazz version of it that plays for a loop. I was pretty skeptical...but after about 50 minutes we were amazed to hear:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqqsewbj5Qw

If I had to guess I'd say that's probably the 64th repetition since each loop seems to be about :48 seconds. Anyways, it was pretty cool for us to hear something we didn't even know existed, from a game we had played for a combined lifetime between us, that had come out almost 10 years prior.

Yep. This includes, as I found out the hard way, if you let the game reload after you die. I managed to power through until right before the escort part before giving up and watching the rest on Youtube.

It also had the Mexican standoff with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (obviously fallen out at this point) where you had to keep shifting your focus to whoever was looking at you.

Such a cool game, probably the best use of an unreliable narrator I've seen in games.

I like the looping train car while he takes a break in the story to go to the bathroom. You hear all the people in the room chatting and your character is just stuck in this one train car looping forever until the storyteller gets back.

But as funny as that game is, I gotta admit, it worked that darker tonal shift.

I liked the part where Silas is investigating a train being hijacked by Jesse James and his pals, so he can inquire on the whereabouts of the men that killed his brothers; a character listening to the story mentions the Pinkertons being there and they get this big fancy introduction and arrive by the dozen over a nearby ridge on horseback, complete with epic musical stinger.

Then Silas basically just goes "nope there weren't no Pinkertons there" and they all just unceremoniosly poof out of existence one by one. :v:

I know Red Dead Redemption is an old game but it's one I go back to repeatedly because I love the setting.

The thunderstorms are brilliant atmosphere in themselves and I spend ages just riding around in the rain, but I just realised if you put the camera at a low angle (as if you're looking up from under your hat) when it's raining the screen starts filling up with water drops. Just adds nicely to the ambience.

Could happen in Assassin's Creed. It's hinted that Lenin, while not an assassin, worked closely with them (enough that he could ask them to off the Czar, though they turned him down.) and gave them several research facilities.

The Assassins are increasingly being presented as well-meaning dicks who borderline on outright dangerous. The game is pretty clearly heading towards a 'split' where Templars and Assassins are stuck with a third protagonist-oriented party who wants to gently caress both of them up.

When a series spends several games pointing out how the Templar want to literally mind control the planet it seems a bit weak to suddenly swing back and say oh yeah the other guys are kinda dicks as well.

Nuance and ambiguity are not AC's strength.

Well, it's (to use another game example) Extreme Law vs Extreme Chaos. The Assassin philosophy is "everything is permitted" which is pro-freedom but pro-freedom can also go too far. (And these are guys who murder anyone who disagrees with them or who they're hired to kill.) It's not really a case of swapping back so much as both sides have dicks.

Nuance is however not Ac's strength at all, no.

"Nothing is true and everything is permitted" used to mean "don't think too hard about it, we wanted to make a game where you're a good guy and still kill people for money" before the series disappeared up it's own rear end in a top hat.

Four is the worst about it. It goes on and on about the evils of being a pirate and then Kenway redeems himself by joining a slightly different group of anarchists who kill people for money.

Ubisoft has a real problem with thinking they're smarter than they actually are.

Yeah, 4 was remarkably sophisticated for that dumb, dumb series. Kenway doesn't belong to any faction; he's a freewheeling, greed-crazed rear end in a top hat who's so hung up on his Big Mystical Treasure that he alienates everyone who even pretends to give a poo poo about him. He never formally joins the Assassins, he just throws in with them after wising up to his own mistakes long enough to clean up his mess and then retires into obscurity.

Likewise, the Assassins and the Templars are caught up in their own little war with neither side coming off looking too rosy, and the worst of them all turns out to be some serially reincarnated alien ex-boyfriend who plays them all for chumps.
