We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
I also really enjoyed the boss fights, since they shook up prior game mechanic systems. I guess we'll see.

I'm alright with that. Hotline Miami isn't really suited for bosses.

Personally the duel with Biker is my favorite part of the game.

A few challenging levels at various points in HLM doesn't mean they need to dumb the difficulty down or remove set piece stages so more people can complete it, if that's what you're suggesting.

Yeah Trauma is pretty easy to figure out. I liked it too, maybe I'm the broke brain.

Trauma was dumb because you could (had to?) mash a and d repeatedly to control when your character was temporarily stunned.

HM1 owns though and I can't loving wait to play 2 and then use jacket exclusively in payday

Nah it's cool, I agree. The level isn't even that bad, and in fact I kind of like it since it sets a fantastic mood and really underlines how unstoppable Jacket is, but it did feel a little too long for its own good.

With the multiple character angle we're going to see a lot more variation in the gameplay and I'm sure there'll be some unique set peice levels to look forward to, but I wouldn't say the hospital level is something I particularly look forward to when I'm replaying the game again.

Actually Jacket does that when you walk too much without pausing. You just have to stand still for a few seconds to prevent this.

I'll admit, I was surprised when I realized the Biker was a boss fight with actual phases. I literally assumed I just had to reach the golf clubs and hit him first like everything else in the game. So not having boss fights like that shouldn't break up the pace of the game IMO.

The Biker boss fight was alright but I didn't care for the other ones. Don't think I ever worked out a reliable way to kill the molotov guy.

If they do have boss fights again, I hope they at least put the reset point after you've gone through all the dialogue. That really broke the pace imo.

I'm replaying the game again these days and I'm 'stuck' at the fight with the panthers, the ninja and the wheelchair guy. The dialogue really breaks it up more than it needs to.

Use Tony, punch the first two guys out, dodge the molotov, use a shotgun, punch again, shotgun again, bam done in under 8 seconds.

The panthers are pretty susceptible to a quick backwards dodge, I've found. Hit one, juke backwards, then hit it again. As for the ninja gal, it helps if you wait for her to crawl into a better position before the mafia boss opens fire.

The hospital level was frustrating because the shakiness built if you held a movement key, not if you actually moved. So you'd get stuck against a wall and pass out and get caught.

My problem with the bosses is that it slows down the gameplay. Same with any level that has a small cutscene where either the cleaners sneers at you in a hotel room or whatever. You're so used to simply tapping R and wading back in that pressing R and having to watch a cutscene (No matter how short) just didn't click for me.

I'm sure there'll be "bosses" in 2, but maybe they'll be more, I don't know. "Puzzle" based? I'm just thinking like maybe you have to chase a dude through a building whilst taking out his goons and finding an optimal path. You'd still have a clear nemesis but it'd remain consistent with the rest of the gameplay.

OK, I tried the first game awhile back and just don't get the game. I would play the way it seemed to want to be played and continually got myself killed. After many tries, I got to the second level and then I gave up. I think I'm going slow and being sneaky but it seems like I get discovered no matter what.

What am I doing wrong?

You need to go fast and ballsy, not slow and sneaky. Enemies have a reaction time (of sorts, not the best way to put it), so sneaking isn't going to help you any, where charging at them means that you get to kill them before they realize.

EDIT: Basically, you're a mass murderer on a killing spree, not a tactical assassin.

I found your problem.

Hotline Miami is not a stealth game, it is a game about being a serial killer.

It's much more similar to a top-down, melee-only Rainbow Six. As in the good ones.

e: a bit of advice that instantly improved my ranks - gun wielding enemies have a faster response rate the longer you come at them from, and vice versa.

There's your problem right there. HM ain't really meant to be a stealth game beyond the whole "enemy awareness" thing, and you're meant to die a whole lot. There's a reason that R restarts the level almost immediately with no loading or song breaks, and that's meant to encourage you to experiment with different approaches in quick succession. Make quick, bold decisions with each run (there's even a rating for Boldness!) and try to adapt to the slight variations each one throws at you.

Embrace the screwups and mishaps. Try being less "shadow" and more "drug-fueled whirlwind".

The only sneaking you should be doing is to scout out which guys have guns, or if there's any dogs.

Yeah, playing Hotline Miami as a stealth game is like trying to play the old Ghost Recon games as an arena shooter. Just completely off.

I had the same problem when I first played it. I tried to do the first level like a stealth game and kept getting murdered. I finally got frustrated enough that I just angrily ran into it out of frustration, and ended up killing everyone and getting an A ranking. That's when it all clicked for me.

If you try something and then die? Hit R.

Wear a different mask. Try coming at the level a different way. Did you die? Hit R.

Wear the mask that lets you slam doors into dudes. Slam a door into a dude. Kill him. Pick up his weapon. Throw it at the next guy. Did you die? Hit R.

Did you die again? Hit R.

Try again. Hit R. Wear a different mask. Try again. Hit R. Try again. Hit R.

Eventually the game will just click.

The next thing you know, you're a loving non-stop killing machine.

How the gently caress do you play this game with an Xbox controller? There's no precision and you have to swivel around like a knob.

Dark_Swordmaster

I just can't imagine playing with a controller anyway with all the "OH gently caress!" wheeling about needing to be done.

That said, having played a few hours of Hotline Miami the past week I find myself constantly yelling at the game because even if I'm facing a bat and standing practically on it, oftentimes I'll right-click and it won't pick it up. Other times, anticipating that it won't pick it up I'll double right-click and throw the loving thing across the room. It's one of my few complaints about how loving inconsistent the game tends to be.

Yeah, I would usually stop and look around at the beginning of a floor, then stop again and look around about halfway through, but aside from that just barrel into everyone. Obviously now I just smash through everything since I've played a bunch, but it was a great strategy when I was starting out.

Also in the newest PC update that I had no idea happened you can actually swap the shoulder and triggers so that the bumpers no longer attack.

Same here. I swapped the bumpers when I first started playing and never looked back. It just makes sense to have lock / attack on the right side, with look / throw on the left.
