A Sydney psychologist has been banned from practicing for a decade after he encouraged a female patient to have sex with a dog.

Gareth Michael Dawes, who had practices at Parramatta and Penrith, has been found by the NSW Health Cares Complaint Commission to have "manipulated" his client, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to "fulfil his own sexual fantasies".

The young woman, a university student, who suffered from psychological issues arising from sexual and physical abuse and neglect, was a client of Dawes between January 2011 and April 2012.

During this time Dawes and the patient sent each other about 3000 emails � many of which had images, videos and website links to pornography within them.

The pair began a sexual relationship in September 2011 which took place in his offices and in secluded public places. In December 2011, the HCCC said Dawes began encouraging the woman to engage in bestiality by having sex with dogs by sending her emails and images about the topic.

Three months later Dawes was found to have "facilitated, participated and watched" his client have sex with a dog.

In an explicit email tendered to the HCCC, Dawes wrote to his client saying: "You'll be safe with me ... You can dictate what happens as I will not permit you being forced into anything you do not want to do..."

Emails written by Dawes recounting what had occurred during the incident were also tendered to the commission.

The tribunal was also told Dawes made similar arrangements on another occasion only for it to be stopped when the woman "freaked out" as the dog, a Staffordshire terrier named Vladimir, began scratching at her arms and legs.

The HCCC was made aware of the actions of Dawes when the woman detailed her relationship with him with her next treating psychologist. She said her relationship with Dawes had ended when his wife became aware of what was occurring.

The woman told the HCCC she did not want him to be punished but rather to be "reprimanded and rehabilitated".

"She considers him to be a 'brilliant professional in terms of his experience and insights into personality disorders and abnormal psychology", the HCCC's judgment read. "She did however wish him to prevent the respondent from victimising any other clients".

The HCCC found that Dawes was suffering from a mental impairment or disorder � "namely a complex paraphilia characterised by periods of fetishism, zoophilia and an obsessive compulsive pre-occupation with pornographic material that detrimentally affects the practitioner's capacity to practice the profession".

The commission said it had no evidence that Dawes had undertaken necessary treatment to overcome this disorder.

"The vulnerability of [the woman] would have been patently obvious, not only to a qualified psychologist - but to any right minded person," the HCCC said in its judgment. "She had a history of being the victim of various forms of abuse, or being a drug user and of having an eating disorder."

The tribunal said after gaining the young woman's trust, Dawes then "set about to manipulate her" into sexual acts with him that she initially had indicated she had no interest in.

The HCCC said it would have cancelled Dawes registration if the psychologist had not already done so himself. It ordered that he be disqualified from re-registering for a period of 10 years and that he also be prohibited from providing community health, counselling or mental health services.

While you were feeding the trolls, Joe Hockey had a defamation court date today. It's managed to put the NSW Libs and their Federal friends under a spotlight they definitely don't need. Here's a capsule summary from in-court twitter journalists:

It's the second day of Hockey's cross-examination by the Fairfax silk. Hockey is persisting with the claim that a forum setup to offer access to him and other leaders in his name was nothing to do with him.

That seems pretty obvious to me, but Joe's having none of it. Hockey is a terrible witness for his own prosecution, BTW. He had to be told twice not to interrupt cross-examination, and played a lot of deniability tennis with words and facts relating to the North Shore Forum. First he claimed it was set up because there was no Chamber of Commerce. Then when it was pointed out that he as Treasurer made mention of the Chamber of Commerce, he said it was set up for the North Shore donators. Then when all the non-North Shore members of the forum were pointed out, we got to listen to whether such-and-such a company was a lobbyist. I kid you not. And then we got to the part where he claims it was independent of him:

The forum�s website carries photographs of Hockey and says: �On behalf of Joe Hockey I encourage you to join the North Sydney Forum and to offer your practical support to Joe Hockey.�

However, Hockey told the court the website was inaccurate and the money donated to the forum went to the wider Liberal party, not to him individually.

�My preferred words would be �business and community leaders engaging with Joe Hockey�. My understanding is they have not provided any resources to me,�� he said.

�If I chased down everything that is inaccurate that is written about me � I would be spending a lot of time in court. I would rather it not be there.��

We'll soon see. Phone records are being sought to back up what the Age editor says about a phone call he had with Hockey this time last year. His former media advisor claims she didn't understand the context of questions put to her about the forum (a former Fairfax journalist. Yeah right.), and was very protective of Joe's diary so we got to hear the excuses about why that wasn't admissible. Tomorrow we'll be hearing from the Fairfax witnesses, particularly chief political correspondent Mark Kenny, the articles writer, Sean Nicholls and Darren Goodsir SMH ed. But fair to say that Hockey hasn't done his cause a great deal of good today.

I'm not really trying to say we should all kill ourselves, suicide is actually really bad and ruins lives and genuinely wishing suicide on someone assumes everyone that cares about them also deserves to suffer, this has been a PSA from the organization to point out that criticism of a country is a cool and good thing to do if you love it and its people that genuinely think Australia is 100% great and get riled up by statements like "Australia is poo poo" that are the loving problem with this cuntry

Gotta be honest, man. If you try to rate a country on the landscape's merits, with no relation whatsoever to the people living in it, Australia would probably come out as a poo poo country.

Admittedly the 'hosed by global warming' thing is our fault, and that's a big part of it, but our land isn't exactly abound in nature's gifts in any categories that aren't 'pain and death'.
