Still worked, and it was just a matter of digging the screws out of the case and putting them back where they were supposed to go. Was clearing snow off the car on Thursday with lights on, and I bumped the headlight housing (the one with the dead low beam) and it came back on. Scratched my head and figured there was probably a bad connection. Snow kept me home-bound and I didn't get to actually figuring things out until Sunday. To isolate the issue, I swapped the bad bulb with the good one from the other side, and all of a sudden both bulbs don't work (low beam only). High beams work fine throughout this. Checked voltage at the pigtail and was getting good -12v reading (positively grounded headlights). Finally just swapped fresh bulbs in today, and both are working. I think they were the originals, so I'm not surprised to have them going out after ~40k miles, but I am surprised that gingerly handling the old (but still working) bulb when swapping between sides caused it to go bad, and that I was temporarily able to get the one that was out to work by tapping the headlight housing. Just weird. I've had the same thing happen to me. Sometimes you can "revive" a dead headlight bulb multiple times with a well-placed thump, but it's just on borrowed time at that point.

Damnit Verizon. Got an email 45 minutes ago saying they were dropping The Weather Channel. They cutover to AccuWeather in the middle of Highway to Hell about 15 minutes ago. I'm getting more and more put out with them when it comes to the TV side, really tempted to switch the TV side over to Time Warner. OK so the problem I see with trying to drive 250 ohm speakers with an 8 ohm amplifier is that the impedance is so different. If you balance it with resistors, you'll only have a tiny amount of current going through your headphones; most would get wasted in the resistors. If you don't do anything and just plug it in, I'd expect you would get reflections back at the amp (and I'm lead to believe they don't like this) due to the impedance mismatch. Can someone else who's actually an EE chime in on this? I've only had one electromagnetism class, and I'm not sure I have it straight.

I was actually looking into getting a schiit magni II or vali some time down the road but I'll defintely look into a O2 as well. The O2 has batteries, but it will function just fine without them on wall power. If you order the O2+ODAC, the batteries are removed and replaced with the DAC. Can someone else who's actually an EE chime in on this? I've only had one electromagnetism class, and I'm not sure I have it straight. I think you're confusing a few things. Impedance generally isn't matched in audio applications. Ideally you want the output impedance to be as low as possible. The output impedance on a power amplifier is usually less than 0.1 ohm, and is designed to power speakers that usually range from 4 to 16 ohms, with some notable exceptions. B&W speakers tend to drop even below 2 ohms at low frequencies, which has earned them a reputation for being hard to drive. The main problem with hooking headphones directly to the speaker outputs is that they can deliver way too much power. A powerful headphone amp will output maybe 300-350 mW into 250 ohms, that's not even close to what even a Lepai amp will deliver on the speaker outputs. You'll end up using maybe 5% of the range on the volume knob, which puts you into the area where all analog volume controls struggle with stereo balance. Of course, you can solve this by adding resistors, but that in turn raises the output impedance, and once the output impedance starts to get above ~1/8th of the headphones' input impedance, you start running into messed up frequency response. This blog post explains it in detail: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/headphone-impedance-explained.html KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 10:37 on Mar 10, 2015 |

Been there, done that, both at home and with cars. Get the cops involved if they're not already; I've actually had them recover stuff more than once, especially if it's kids (they usually know a few kids at the neighborhood schools). It wouldn't hurt to look into an alarm either (from anyone except ADT), it'll get you a discount on your insurance and also scare off amateurs.

Cripes, spent 30 minutes on the phone with Verizon just trying to tell them "I want to get rid of all but 1 set top box, and keep my existing cable cards". Rep kept arguing that if I had cable cards, I couldn't have set top boxes of any kind, and that he couldn't send me a box. I kept saying "uh, look at my account, I already have two set top boxes and two cable cards, I just want to return one set top box, and downgrade the other to just a STB without any DVR service". He kept insisting I didn't have cable boxes, and I could only have cable cards on my account. It was very obviously babby's first call center job, and probably his first day on the phones, but for fucks sake don't argue with me about what equipment I have sitting in front of me. I did get a free upgrade to 75/75 and the top tier TV package for 1 year, at least. I don't even know what the channel lineup difference is, but the speed upgrade is nice (and seems to have already taken effect), and he pinky swear promised it wouldn't extend my contract. The confirmation email I got seems to confirm that. Not sure if he threw that out because I was very obviously annoyed, or if it's just a promo they're tossing out anytime someone downgrades any form of service, but I'm not going to bitch. e: looks like it gets me a bunch of movie and sports channels. I'm not much on sports, but stepdad is. I'm always up for free Showtime and Cinemax. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 14:17 on Mar 10, 2015 |

jammyozzy posted:I was in the back, fortunately it didn't snap in two while I was on there. You rang? The creaking seldom comes from the swiwel itself, but rather the dampeners. The shroud that encases the joint (and the joint part of the bus really) have a habit of getting torn on the underside. When this happens you have water getting sprayed onto the hardware of the joint. If they salt the roads (as they do here, with vigor) the dampeners have a habit of creaking loudly and give the motion a choppy nature. The major problem in solving this is the fact that to be able to properly grease the joint you need the bus to be moving. you have one tech laying just behind the joint on the floor of the bus with a spray bottle of thin grease, and he then greases up the struts when the bus is cornering. if the bus straightens up the joint with his arms in the way these will be chopped off. in other news....
