Series really sucked while they were on the farm so I'm glad they switched to this adventure comedy. I do miss the political side of the comic. Askeladd setting up Canute to take over the throne was just as exciting as Thorfinns fight with Thorkell

The payoff to the farmland saga was really fantastic though.

I strongly disagree. I thought that part was strong throughout and that the climax to it was the best moment in Vinland Saga so far.

It was probably hell for you people while you were reading it as it was coming out, but at least it's moving. But when will they ever get to Vinland?

And at least Yukimura seems to have some discipline writing this, and isn't constantly playing Idolmaster.

Here's February's Otoyomegatari featuring a pretty unnecessary encore of what seems to be everyone's least favorite arc (except, apparently, the paying readership :v:), but at least it has another cool moonlight scene... and a very important announcement: ITS FINALLY PARIYA'S TURN HECK OF YES

I'm operating on secondhand reporting from the Japanese boards here, but apparently Mori goes into a little more detail on this "sisterhood" business in the afterword of Volume 7 (recently released), she seems to have researched a Persian practice called "khwahar khanda" or possibly "khwahar-gir", which she based Anis and Shirin's relationship on. I still don't have anything solid to quote for all this, so if this new tidbit rings a bell with anyone following the thread, maybe you could share with the class.

I actually loved this arc. There's not many ways you can incorporate same-sex love into a series set in the 1800s in Central Asia but Mori did a fine job, with polyamory to boot.

Pierson posted:

I think that may have been intentional, it's really dreamlike and Anis' life is as close to paradise as she can imagine.

Honestly I'm still not sure what to think in this regard. If there was one word of acknowledgement I would gladly hop aboard that train, but I didn't really find that in the dialog, and not for lack of trying. Everyone unironically (as far as i could tell) insists they're "just friends" the whole way through, and all the affectionate language between the two is the kind of thing you could say to your family or a very close friend.
That being said, I have no idea what else the intent behind the pink rainbow cloud hearts-and-flowers nonsense could be. Baiting readers? Willful ignorance of genre conventions? "they're gay" starts to sound like the most likely interpretation.

I tried to keep things neutral, or ambiguous at best, but I don't think I did a very good job. Turns out its an imperfect science, and I'm an imperfect scientist :v:

Do they kind of lobby that certain series like Otoyomegatari stop getting updated by Kissmanga because of some angry scanlators or something? I've noticed it with a couple manga and it honestly kind of annoys me. Like tough poo poo, you're not really legally viewing the manga anyway, it's not like you own it either, you scanned and translated someone else's manga and added cute little bookends and said "PLZ BUY DIS AND SUPPORT ARTIST /\_/\" which is just a meaningless statement anyway.
I want all my manga series updated in one place dammit. It's hard to keep track of poo poo otherwise. :argh:
Not sure if Batoto has all of the same series as kissmanga or whatever, though I don't think I'm as big of a fan of the user interface (and series having just like, chapters of various languages thrown in in a big mulch).
Considering what's been going on with this last Otoyomegatari arc though, it doesn't really seem like I'm missing anything. I'm not sure I can keep reading this otaku-pandering boobcat arc without getting douchechills. It's not exactly a run of chapters I can take pages of and recommend to other friends into manga (HEY LOOK AT THIS CAT TOUCHING TIT!!!). Hopefully we're off to something else soon story-wise, I haven't caught up.

At least Vinland Saga and Vagabond have been majorly on point. Historie still has too many half-sketched LotR ghost armies, but oh well.

You have to be a moron to not read it from the context that it's a romantic relationship and Aris is crazy in love with her. Even from all the way back when her nurse mentioned the idea to her there was an intense overtone of romance.

Usually when things become legally available in the US many sites will take down their scans to encourage people to buy the released volumes but still host the unreleased versions.

Have you set languages to only show English? The settings are underneath the "search comics" box (not the one at the very top of the page, the one right underneath Donate/Chat/Edit Style). Hit "Alter Settings," then select the "Show selected languages" radio button, check "English," and save.

It's not like I don't see that angle, I just meant to say that the message isn't coherently maintained between the art and the words and I ended up giving more weight to the dialog in my reading.
