That argument doesn't 100% work for me, though, because there's shows that I like the inherent concept of but it's the execution that ultimately fails. The storyline of the three series I mentioned in the last post are: 1: Two immortal women who work as private detectives whose story is told over the course of a couple hundred years 2: Highschoolers fighting off a zombie crisis 3: Warriors from across a country fighting to be crowned queen Those are all concepts that should be really fascinating shows that offer insights, but are ultimately held back by what their audience wants (or demands) from the genre, and the creators are more than happy to give it to them. Again, Rin has a ton of potential (the female characters are from what I recall are pretty well written) but then again one's an eternal fourteen year old (ahyup) and the series' overall plot boils down to "powerful, smart women's ultimate purpose is being used for sex". asecondduck fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Mar 13, 2015 |

There's only so much time I've got, and so much good tv to get through, so I don't think I'm being crazy by freeing up my time by avoiding products aimed at children and foreign media aimed at man-children. I'm man child myself, so I'm trying to not be judgemental here. I liked that Tartovsky robot show though. Noir was good, Rahxephon too, back in college. SU had its first season finale last night which ended with one of the main characters revealed to be a "fusion" of two girls who are in a relationship together (so it pleases the tumblr crowd), who then sing about their partnership during the rad climactic fight/escape scene, and also the character is voiced by R&B singer Estelle so it sounded amazing.

"well written female characters" is a weird thing to define. Women acting 100% strong and capable isn't very true to life, and women acting like men isn't very true to life, but a lot of times that' the result of shows trying to shoehorn in "well written female characters". Women act like women, and I think you need capable writers to pull it off. Lots of prestige dramas get this right. I think Togetherness, while sort of dull, has very accurate portrayals of gender. Maybe it's harder to pull off in action or fantasy, as women in high risk/high stress scenarios is not something most people have direct experience with, unless you're in the army maybe.

Ah yes, a.k.a. the show where Amanda Peet plays the MPDG to Steve Zissis's goony egomaniac, who has no redeeming qualities yet is somehow the man of her dreams. Such accuracy. That half of the show is just a complete male wish fulfillment fantasy.

Maybe if they take that direction it would be, but hasn't she just been rebuffing him and is angry with him for wrecking their friendship as he flounders about not knowing how to deal with his feelings? They've shown his redeeming qualities anyways, he's dependable, a good friend, and pretty motivated under the right circumstances.

Rabbit Hill posted:Or...you just need writers who understand that women are human beings. It shouldn't take any special talent to do that. What I mean is that men and women are different. They have different types of personalities in general, and I would consider it a special talent to be able to effectively capture that difference without getting it wrong, or going overboard, or understating it. You can get away with treating everyone the same, I guess. GRR Martin has the quote like yours, where he says he treats women like people and that's how he's able to write female characters, but it ends up being that everyone in that show acts in the same semi-masculine way, and there's a lot missing from that world that exists in the rich mix of male and female voices in the real world.
